Class of 2015!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know of an M1 who's 39. Feeling old now?

I was just being sarcastic yesterday, I didn't mean to start a whole age debate thing.

But I know an M3 that's in his 50s! That takes some serious dedication.

Wow, that is pretty serious! I think doctors on the younger side are a legitimate concern too, like those 6 or 7 year combined programs that some HS kids rush into. Or in (most?) countries where you go straight to med school w/o an intermediate college degree.

Yeah, I definitely agree. That's why I decided to wait, I didn't think I would be mature enough to start med school just after turning 21.

My grandma went to med school in South America (way back in the day - 1940s-ish) and it was a straight from their equivalent of high school deal. She told me it was like a 5 year thing, and then they were doctors. But as a female, they weren't actually allowed to make diagnoses, but they could treat and stuff. That's just what she told me, not exactly sure how accurate it is (my grandma gets confused sometimes) but I thought that was interesting.

Lol, your grandma sounds sweet. Women couldn't do a lot of things back then without backlash.

I've really come to appreciate my undergraduate years. I've come a long way since my high school years, and 4 years of med school will be the same. Residents probably look back and are like, Damn college was so frivolous!

That's really old. I wonder how he/she feels in school where most are in their early twenties.

I'll be 25, but if I get lucky enough to match into a neurosurgical residency, I'll be 31-32. I'll probably do a fellowship too, so 33-34. Long road ahead...

A lot of kids these days are trying to become doctors sooner by going to foreign medical schools(like Indian or Chinese), because their medical schools are college majors so it'd take a total of 5 years instead of 8(college + med school).

Yup fun times. Hope we don't turn into wrinkled old grandpa or grandma when we become full doctors.

Yea it's a smart choice if you go straight out of high school, but if you have graduated college, going to foreign medical school has no point (and risky).

Yea I'll be 24 when I start. While that may be old compared to all the 22 year olds, I am glad I took time off. I have learned a lot from working (and gained some money too 😀)

I'll be 21, but shortly after 22, haha

I wonder what the prospects of successfully returning to the US are? Or are these people planning on staying where they train?

I can't help but notice that the Class of 2015's thread title has fewer exclamation points than the Class of 2014's did. It's striking when the 2014 thread is above the 2015 thread. We need a 2015 mod (are there any?) to fix this egregious error 😀.

The 2014ers and 2013ers are currently propping up this thread, so I don't really see a need for mod intervention...

No there aren't any. You 2015ers better step it up. Or maybe I'll give you an extra because I feel bad for you.

I'm the nice mod. Just gave y'all an exclamation point. You're welcome.

She is not the nice mod, she's the sneaky-evil mod. She sweet talks you to get you to let your guard down, and then BAM... post-hold out of nowhere. At least I'm up-front about being mean 😀

And I'm not dumb enough to take away the exclamation point right now when everyone's looking... I'll wait until nobody is watching😉

2015 class needs a mod. Every class thread should have at least one mod, IMO.

That is bs especially for the Chinese part. First, there are not that many Chinese kids, whose level of Chinese and English are both at College level. Yes I can speak fluent Chinese just fine but for me to study orgo and biochem in Chinese? no way. Second it is quiet hard to get in a good medical school in China (especially if you have to take the nationalized test). Heck its hard to get into any higher level education that is good enough for you to return to the state.

Most Chinese doctors that moved to US had to walk a long and hard road. 1. 5-6 years of medical school in china. 2. Practice in china for few years. 3 Get in US as a GRADUATE PHD student...to get their green card and english good enough...5-7 years. 4 Match into US residency (usually only get in pathology, and a few other non-conversational stuff) another 4-5 years? Many of them become doctors when they are in their 40's.......

I have 2-3 years of undergrad left. This thread makes me cry.

Just curious. . . how many people have all of their letters of rec ready for the next cycle?

Personally I have zero at the moment, but I have meetings scheduled over winter break with 3 writers who have agreed to do it. I'm going to request 2 more in a couple weeks. With all of the horror stories I've heard about professors taking forever and delaying applications I hope I'm ready to go when AMCAS opens.

no, they mostly plan on coming back. i'm not sure about their prospects, but i'd assume that they have it much harder in passing the boards and matching.

I don't officially have any yet.

I have two at this moment (from my physics professor and employer). I will ask for more letters over winter break or spring break. Hopefully it won't be too late. 😀

I thought people usually ask for letters of rec spring semester? People are already asking now?

I didn't even ask my employer for a rec letter. SHE OFFERED! We were pretty close and she knew that I want to pursue medicine. I was thrilled when I got her letter 😀

If you ask in the Spring, make sure to ask in January or February. Don't be like me and have your entire application slowed down just to wait on one last LOR to come in.

It never hurts to let your rec letter-writers know far in advance so they know to expect it. Plus you can keep them updated on what you're doing and they'll get to know you that way.

I plan on asking for mine either during winter break with some, or the first week of classes next semester for profs.

I didn't see any point waiting until spring. I decided to ask professors I've already taken. I don't think a prof will write a letter if I haven't even finished his class, and waiting until the end of spring is too late. All the profs I've asked want to meet over the break when they're less busy anyway.

Hmmm.... when I made this thread, the title had the same number of exclamation marks as 2014.... I wonder....

I like how there is the same number of exclamation marks in both titles. OP means serious business.

I was beginning to think I couldn't count, which is a very real but unlikely possibility too.

Same here. 😀

Simple explanation. So 2014 used to have 14, then Spurs was secretly taking them away. I didn't notice til I noticed that 2015 had the same amount (10). So then I gave 2014 back it's 4 that had been stolen. And I gave you 1 because I'm nice.

Alright, who stole the class of 2015's exclamation marks?

Great, class warfare on SDN.

Good, I thought I was losing it for a moment.
