Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Went to make an appointment with a counselor today. They are only taking walk-ins right now and the counselor's lunch break coincides with mine 🙁 The secretary told me to come back later and maybe she could fit me in so I explained that I had class until 4:30 and that my classes go from 8:30-4:30 everyday except Friday. Her response? "Well I guess you won't get to see a counselor then. Too bad". I asked if they ever had evening hours and she said "No, we don't give special treatment for vet students". I wasn't asking for special treatment, just if they had evening hours 😕

Thanks to everyone here for being supportive. I probably would have already walked away if not for you guys.

😱 How horrible! We have a counselor just for the vet/grad school here... I'd also echo emailing the counselor directly and asking, they may be more understanding.

Wow we have one too! That is horrible that they can't work something out. Are there any days you get out earlier?

Yup, that happened to me here too. I remember really envying the veterinary schools who provide a counselor just for their students. I ended up calling our Counseling and Psychological Services office and flat out telling them that I needed help finding someone who I could meet with after 5 pm. They had a few referrals and one had a local office and evening hours. Don't give up. Sometimes the receptionists are rude but I found that at least one doctor at our CAPS was very sympathetic and helpful. Without him and the counselor they referred me to, I think things would have been much more difficult for me.

That's horrible! And yes, email the counselor. But I would personally make a stink about that policy too....

Ky, I messaged you on FB. I've had this problem with UPEI before unfortunately. I know they've got limited resources, but a lot of their services are really more geared towards their regular undergraduates rather than the vet school and it's seriously annoying and unfair.

Hang in there, firsties. Give it some more time. It's always hard at first in some way - social issues, efficiency issues, grades, adjusting to the crazy schedule... it's a pain in the ass. Just keep at it for a while longer and you should notice that it's not as bad after a while...

It's week 4 and I feel like I'm getting in the groove of vet school and freaking out a lot less, of course it is a weekday and as our group says, I don't feel impending doom until the weekend, which apparently is the opposite of most people. This weekend I'm studying cell bio like there aint no tomorrow and hopefully by Monday I'll feel confident with the material 😀, I'm pretty confident that that will be one of the better midterms.

Someone is painting their nails in class. I mean seriously... WTF?!?!?

Wahhhh. I forgot my phone at my apartment. It feels weird and I don't like it.

I also don't like that we don't have anatomy lab today. I'm now stuck in the same room from 9-5 except for the hour of lunch. That's not enough of a break...I'm going to go crazy.

And I have a headache from the wine club event last night...today is going to be a rough day.

Okay, in undergrad, I wouldn't have been too surprised. Annoyed, yeah, but not surprised.

In vet school? What the hell. Is the prof not noticing, because any that noticed here would, I believe, make a big stink about how it's rude etc...

On the one hand, seeing a lumbo-sacral CSF tap in a horse is pretty cool.

On the other hand, I wish it wasn't on my horse.

I am totally exhausted. Literally every cell of my body feels like week old hamburger. But we can do it! This is what we dreamed of for so many years!

And to remind everyone of our passion for our furry comrades, please enjoy the cutest picture in history. [edit: image link didn't work. Let me try again]

ALMOST FRIDAY (which means two glorious days of not being subjected to additional information crammed into our overfull brains!!!)

Feeling much more confident today. Was able to have 3 hours in the anatomy lab with the specimens. I feel like I know both the forelimb and hindlimb now when I didn't know anything about them going in. Some of my amazing classmates gave me their mnemonics for memorizing the muscles of the forelimb and another classmate and I came up with our own mnemonic for the hindlimb. So happy I was able to go!! Feeling much more relaxed and confident now, anaomy exam I am going to kick your arse!

Ugh. We have a careers class right now and these food safety speakers are painfully boring... and are talking about having boring jobs and missing clinical practice. Way to sell it.

That totally made me laugh haha.

And my confidence was crushed again today. I swear they don't want us to feel like we have a gameplan and will make it through and study everything. We went over like 20 pages of Anatomy notes today and it was just like 😱. She asked if any of us had looked ahead 🙄, we had a quiz yesterday for crying out loud! I think we were all brain dead after that. And now we have a cell midterm on Monday so next time we'll catch up on Anatomy is sometime next week, but we have a clicker quiz on Tuesday 🙁. So much for feeling caught up.

Feeling a little better today. All the messages and support I have been receiving are keeping me going 🙂 I feel ok about classes. I made a promise to myself that if I was accepted to vet school I wasn't going to go overboard with trying to get As and stretching myself thin with too many activities. It has been difficult controlling that competitive type A drive but I keep reminding myself my goal is to be a good veterinarian, not to win the most awards or be top of the class.

My boyfriend and kitty are coming to visit tomorrow 😍

Wow, I'm so proud of you guys! It sounds like everyone is working really hard, and hopefully you are all also working hard to take care of yourselves as well!
I'm almost embarrassed to post here because we have had a pretty low-key (read: easy) start. We've had a lot of lecturers talk about mental health, stress management, and how they want us to relax and have good quality of life. I think they're really focusing on *not* torturing the delicate new students, because we've only had one small test so far (and our current two-month block is pass/no pass). The second years have told us that things will pick up really quickly, so I'm really trying to enjoy this time and test out different study/notetaking strategies.
And remember guys, tomorrow is friday, which means the day after is saturday!!

I just got my first email from a professor filled with things to look at before school starts in a week and a half. Aah! I'm nervous! 😱 :scared:

Immunology test going on today...and for once I actually feel ready for it. Lets do this!

Don't be nervous. Try to look it over. If you aren't familiar with the anatomy directional terms (like know them in your sleep) l'd recommend studying them and really getting familiar with them because for me anyways figuring out how to describe where something is in relation to another is the hardest part. As for starting to memorize things, for anatomy our bones are self study, so learning that would be good, but I'd leave the muscles and vessels go until you discuss them in class and dissect because it is so much easier to learn them once you've actually seen them. As for the other classes, well if you get a notes packet, I'd look over the first couple pages but not go too crazy. Pretty much really enjoy your last days of freedom! Do something fun! That is my suggestion. Honestly with how overwhelming it's been, I could have studied for months beforehand and I feel I'd still feel the same about how much there is to learn!

First test of my vet school career... Don't feel ready. Haven't been sleeping well and me and the boyfriend have been having troubles. Ugh.

Thanks for the advice and encouragement! 🙂

I ended up looking it all over, and it doesn't seem too bad... Most of it is planes and directional terminology, some of which I've already learned and just need to re-memorize. I made some flash cards and now I'm feeling much better. Another part of the email she sent was a pdf of chapter 1 of the Dyce anatomy book for some "light reading for your pleasure" as she called it... I think my professor has a sick sense of humor 😛 I've never been much of a textbook reader so I'll probably just skim it. I loaded it onto onenote so that I can highlight if necessary. And as far bones go, she said we'll be going over the bones of the thoracic limb on Monday and Wednesday, and then we start dissecting on Friday. Hopefully this means we'll be easing into it a bit!

All in all, I'm feeling a lot better now! It was just that initial reaction to a big email with a big powerpoint attachment and a big .pdf filled with 31 pages of information all sent nearly two weeks before school starts that made me somewhat queasy, hahaha.

That is really nice. Our first day was: here are the bones of the thoracic limb to know and the bulleted parts are the parts of the bone to know. We'll be covering these muscles, here's how you should start dissecting your dog, good luck! It is only week 4 and we've already dissected the entire thoracic limb:muscles, vessels, and nerves, and gone over the thorax (lungs, bloodflow, and nerves of the thorax) and started dissecting it. will be going over the heart next I think. The pace is so fast! Be glad that you're easing into it 👍. My lab group is awesome though, couldn't have chosen a better group if I tried, we all have different strengths and work well together, it's great. Makes the days we have to go in on the weekend better.

Were weren't even given a list of stuff to know. Basically anything that is in bold in the dissection guide is fair game. We weren't even told how to start cutting. We just showed up at lab and got to it.

Wow . Do you guys not have lecture for Anatomy? That is strange, we go over everything (takes up a ton of our lab time) then go to lab. We end up spending a lot of time outside class in the lab, but it's worth it for the extra info for sure!

Dearest Anatomy:

I am so glad that I will be done with you at the end of next week after I kick your test's arse. Please do not take my dislike of you too seriously and don't be offended by the arse-whooping you are going to receive.

Sincerely,

The (hopeful :xf:) anatomy-test arse whooper. 🙂

Got my first two exams grades of vet school back!!!!!!! 😱
:soexcited: :hardy:
I'm sure it will not stay this way for long, but I'll take it while I can get it 😀

I take it to mean that you passed? and with flying colors? 😀

Take a break from studying...seriously. Also, I made some AOI charts for all the muscles of both limbs with schematic drawings and groupings and commonalities. Do you want me to send it to you? It definitely helped me on my anatomy test...

If you don't mind, that would be absolutely fantastic! If it is easier to email it just let me know and I can PM you my email address. 🙂

This is how I feel finding out that we have exams at the end of November and then have an AHWAFS exam the day before Christmas Break:

What is AHWAFS? I love that we have finals before Christmas and then Christmas break is an actual break with no studying or anything 😀. That is what used to keep me going in undergrad (looking forward to winter and summer breaks) and it is what keeps me going now. I hope we have exams right before Thanksgiving break too so there isn't any studying for that weekend, but that is highly unlikely.

AHWAFS= Animal Health, Welfare and Food Safety. We have Animal Body 2 exams at the end of November then we start covering info for Animal Body 3 before Christams Break and continue after Christmas Break. We have about 2 weeks between Animal Body 2 exams and AHWAFS exams to catch up on and study that material.

DVMD and everyone else:
This website is awesome. It has anatomy muscle quizzes, insertion, origin, action quizzes, lesion localization cases, etc.
http://vanat.cvm.umn.edu/
This website is cool because it quizzes you on bone/bone bumps via rads.
http://vetmed.illinois.edu/courses/imaging_anatomy/index.html
:luck:

I'd like to add to that with this: http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vetneuro/VCA3/vca.html

Not sure why it's online; in the email my anatomy prof sent us, she mentioned they'd have it for sale once we started school. But there it is, free, on Colorado State's website. Maybe it's an older version?

If you don't mind, that would be absolutely fantastic! If it is easier to email it just let me know and I can PM you my email address. 🙂

Same here. There was some guidance in our dissection guide and if it's really weird then they show us on a cadaver and we go and get it done. Every bolded word can be tested.

Have to share this, because this is how I currently feel (no offense intended to those of you that do enjoy anatomy):

I love this. I'm convinced it's someone at my school that started this, and I know someone in my class has been submitting a lot of the more recent ones.

Finals are before Thanksgiving and then we have two weeks of selectives, which are just fun pass fail classes that we take for two weeks.

Like in BacT. Micro was too long ago for me to remember like any of it.

Our viro prof assumes we all remember immunology. We all looked at him like he had three heads.

Hahah, love this! I feel/felt the same way. A couple of us saw our old anatomy professor in the hall and everyone was like I MISS ANATOMY! And I was like ......😳

I considered signing up as a tutor for anatomy. Then I thought, no, I really don't want to go back in that lab.

studying in the library.........where it is freaking freezing cold and is making me more sleepy.

biochem sucks by the way....

having a bad weekend i never feel like i'm on top of anything 🙁
