Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Our first exam in the second round was today and let's just say that I hope the rest of this round of exams goes better. 25 questions were awesome, the other 35, not so much. Honestly have no idea how I did on them, could have gotten an A on them or a D and it wouldn't surprise me at all.

Next two exams should be better, they're my favorites, pharmacology and then anatomy 🙂.

Exam number 1 over.... not sure how to feel overall... other than I know nothing about horses... (I can't even cry I am at the stage of laughing now)...

Ok Part 2 tomorrow.... I have to look at digestion because apparently I know nothing about it (especially when it relates to horses).....

Oh and repro sucks... that is all.

Anatomy lab and lecture exam tomorrow on the head and pelvis (and cumulative of thorax and abdomen)...and I have zero motivation. I've read through all my notes and I feel pretty prepared, but not as much as I normally do....
We have had way too many exams this semester and it has taken a big toll. I don't really care about grades anymore, I just want to get through each test and pass.

So, instead of studying, I am looking at baby names and eating girl scout cookies..😀

I think I just killed that exam..... Yes... I think it died and has been buried.

This is an unusual feeling because I usually feel like the exam kicks my butt.... Hopefully this isn't a false sense and I really did kill the exam.

Good job DVM Dream! Hope you did awesome.

Still waiting for grades to go up on our exam from Monday. Hasn't been long yet, but I'm guessing someone or more than one someone didn't take it so who knows how long it will be before we find out our grades.

Just curious--

Who else takes exams on ExamSoft or any other computer testing program? If you use a program other than ExamSoft, what has your experience been?

We use it at MSU. It usually runs pretty smoothly. For some tests, we get our scores back as soon as we submit it (just like the GRE), for others, we wait a few hours-days until the professor is ready to release the results.

I'm getting annoyed with how crappy of a test taker I am. We just had a neuro exam which I initally felt good about until I then heard people talking about the text and realized how many stupid mistakes I made. I've done well on tests in college, but I seem to be making a lot more silly mistakes in vet school than I have in the past and its getting frustrating.

A test trick I learned from a psych professor: When you get the test, read though it before answering any question. Your brain can need warm up time, so by the time you've read the last page, the info for the first questions has "loaded" into a more accessible location in your brain.
And a trick from personal experience: Don't study up until the last minute before the professor hands you the test. It's hard in vet school with so many exams and I have fallen prey to it recently, but I found my concentration is best when I have a 10 minute "zen time" pre-test. No talking about the test, no studying and sometimes if I'm nervous I do meditation breathing.

U of I does. My experience has been good although I know some people have had issues with it crashing or freezing or something else. Overall though, I believe the majority of the class doesn't have any problems.
I wish we got our scores back that soon.... They don't give us scores right away because they run analysis on the test after everyone has taken it to see if there are questions that need to be thrown away (like if only 20% of the class got it right). We've had some quizzes where we got the scores later in the day or the next day but usually we have to wait a few days.

Might have to try that first bit next test. And I usually try not to study the last 10 minutes, because I know it usually just confuses me more. More of my issue seems to be with actually reading the question correctly. And I do sit there and underline and circle parts as I read. And I'm not one that rushes through tests, so its annoying that it seems to be happening more frequently. I sometimes go back and reread the questions after I finish the test, but then I second guess my answers and change them to the wrong ones a lot of the time.

Two tricks for multiple choice. First if it is NOT a pick the correct/incorrect statement. Read the question only (while covering the multiple choice part) write your answer then find your answer in the options. Sometimes what you wrote won't be there but this helps a fair amount. Second trick--do NOT change answers ever it is that little voice in the back of you head--trust it.

Good luck

We use ExamSoft at Western. Mixed feelings about it.

Thanks for that tip as well. I'll also be giving that one a try too.
The test ended up going okay, but my stupid mistakes did cost me a letter grade but its definitely recoverable.

Could epidemiology be less interesting? No, it is not possible for anything to be less interesting. Except possibly my epi professor....

I like Epi :x

Thoracic limb still has me baffled, though... uck.

Have a bacteriology exam tomorrow, last one in our second round of exams and we just found out yesterday that the fungus lectures from Tuesday and Wednesday WILL be on the exam 😱. I was already worried before I found that out, I know NOTHING about fungus and very little about bacteria. My first grade in that class was not so hot and I was hoping to bring it up with this one, but now I'm just hoping I pass! Can't wait for the weekend!

We're done at noon tomorrow but that's about it for us. I'm just glad we that much time off cause we have what sounds like it's going to be a brutal Immuno exam on Tuesday and I can definitely use that time for listening to lectures.

I have been so lazy so far on this break.... It feels good, but I also have quite a bit of stuff to do now next week because I decided to just take this week off...

Anyone have any quick methods for learning sheep/cattle/horse breeds.... same goes for horse colours.... never did understand why a brown horse is called a bay or a dark bay or any of the other weird colours... the horse is brown.. call it brown...

I just had to make flashcards and go through them again and again. Repetition. If you can find a trait that stands out, put it on there too because eventually you'll say the name along with that trait. You can make a matching game out of it too.

Pop quiz: ID the colors and breeds of these horses. 😛

Sorry I just killed the thread with an overly large image.

Those are dark brown horses... breed.. unknown....

Give me any dog and I can probably figure it out.. do NOT ask me about horses... I am horse dumb...

haha 👍 I'm sure you're better at recognizing the dog breeds than I am. Slowly starting to learn my dog breeds beyond the popular types. Did you know they split the Jack Russell breed up to the Jack Russell and the Parson Russell Terrier?

The horse on the left was my mare, a liver chestnut, and the one of the right is my cousin's gelding. He's dark brown, but goes black when he gets his winter coat. My other horse is a nice light bay in the summer with dapples and turns almost black in the winter with little bits of light brown around his face. Both are Morgans. 😍

The entire horse paragraph... 😕... can't we just say they are dark brown? or light brown?

Yes... I did know that about the Russell split/switch.. there was some technical thing to it.... I don't really care that much... I have always known them as Jack Russell's and most people that I know that own them also call them that. 🙂

😱 Because it's not brown! It's bay! How specific do you need to be with breeds and colors? I might have some good links or methods that will help. 🙂

Specific... they are really keen on being specific here... so anything that you have that might help, I would appreciate...

(And I still say it is brown...😉)

Honestly...learning horse breeds (especially IDing different warmbloods and such) is just something you learn after looking at A LOT of different horses. If it makes you feel better, I had a vet from a local clinic come out to pull coggins on both my horses; he's the equine vet at a mixed practice. We don't use them, because I prefer to use equine-specific vets, but they are down the road which meant a cheaper bill (and anybody can pull a coggins).

Anyway....I had a hard time convincing him that my Inspected and Registered Pinto Oldenburg filly was not a Paint. I told him she was an Oldenburg, and then I had to tell him how to spell it. I got the Coggins test back, and it said Paint. 🙄 I actually went back to the vet office and gave them an earful, because it does matter that the breed is correct when I take her to a show.

That long story was only to make you feel better about having a hard time learning horse breeds. Horse owners don't mind you asking, but if we tell you the breed and how to spell it, you better get it right. 😉

You horse owner's are soooo picky... :meanie:😛

And crazy...and we spend a lot of money on veterinary care so be nice. 😛

And I just remembered that the vet said to me (while he was writing Paint): how do you make an Oldenburg? I started to explain the whole inspection/registration thing, and just gave up. Maybe he didn't even believe me that it was a breed.

Let me look and see if I can find some good color charts and breed pages, and I'll get back to you. Would could just start posting pictures of horses and have you guess. I think selisona's method sounds fun!

I know you guys spend a lot and are therefore crazy.... I just have to poke some fun at you.... I mean... a brown horse is a brown horse... right? 😉

I think you mean PP's method....

Yes, I had thought about doing that as well, that means I have to fix my printer... (buy ink for it)... sigh... I have to fix it eventually... 🙂

Oh no...I meant post them on here like selisona did earlier. But that could be a PP method as well.

Have you looked at this page? http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2011/201/a/6/guide_to_horse_colors_patterns_by_cedarseed-d412m28.jpg

It actually looks like a really good chart, and it seems to combine colors for easier memorization.

Yes.. posting them on here would be good too!! I just wasn't sure what you meant, that is my fault... 🙂

I have not seen that chart... That looks great! I will have to study that.. thanks! 🙂

Sheesh, whenever I've done Coggins paperwork I've always put down whatever the owner said because it's what they wanted. It makes a big difference what breed you put down if your client is planning on showing, particularly in Class A or breed shows. No comparison between a Paint and Oldenburg tbh. *crazy horse person*

Ain't that the truth... 🙄

If you're judging by color only, then yes because Paints are primarily associated with that color. Conformation, no. Looks like a warmblood to me. 😀

How about these guys, DVMDream?

ok that's it I've thankfully run out of horses.

Are the first two of the same horse... well I would call that a pony... looks small.. don't know breed... I would say white.. but I have learned there is no such thing as white for a colour...

The "brown" one... I honestly don't know... warmblood? I have no clue... I am horse illiterate..

Correct! It's a miniature horse, but we really don't know anything about his breed or lineage. You can't really see that he's "freckly". Don't know what else to call it. He has little splashes of black scattered around is body. Former owners said he was "appaloosa" colored. Who knows?

hehe Yep. Brown! 😀 Here's another picture of him with his "summer" coat. He's a Morgan although I guess he could be confused with a Saddlebred since there was so much illegal crossing within the breed.
