Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you're judging by color only, then yes because Paints are primarily associated with that color. Conformation, no. Looks like a warmblood to me. 😀

Ahhh you hit the nail on the head. People forget or don't realize that Paint isn't a color which is why you can't fully ID a breed by that, and why there are solid registered Paints. And of course Paints with colors are actually all pintos in addition. 😉 😀

What, no Edinburgh pony trekking? 😉

I would... But I am just not that comfortable with horses.... I have ridden a horse twice... in my life... once with a friend who is horsey and once on a trail through some place out in the desert that allows the public to go on trail rides with the horses...

I would say white.. but I have learned there is no such thing as white for a colour...

There actually is such thing as a white horse, but they have to be born white unlike a gray that is born another color and turns "white."

There was a big deal some years ago about white being accepted as a color by The Jockey Club. (I think they are still hashing out the details on buckskin, smokeys, cremellos, etc.)

Proof that it exists: http://www.itsmypony.com/news-archive/161-white-thoroughbred 😉

This is fun...now I can honestly say that if I was quizzed on breeds of cats, I would fail MISERABLY, and my knowledge of dogs is only what I've seen in real life and on tv with the Westminster Dog Show. Funny how things seem so common sense to one are not to another.

Interesting... we were always told that it isn't a "true white" though.. whatever that means.... I say if it looks white, it is white.

That's what I was "taught" as well, but I believe it was disproven through genetics over the last 6+ years or so. Just don't quote me if it's on a test. 😉

A la: "But Mr. Professor, sir. Philliab on the Pre-Vet SDN said that there is such thing as a white horse so it must be true. Which means that you must be wrong. Please give me credit for my answer." :naughty:

(PS. Just noticed that the "naughty" eyes might have suggested something above that I didn't not mean to suggest. Unfortunately, it was so funny to me that I'm not deleting them.)

😆

But, I like that answer for the professor...

I could have also forgotten too... I am just talking off memory from a few lectures... but there was some mention of fatal white syndrome and there being no such thing as "true white"..

I'm gonna join the horse ignorant section and say that I'm just starting to understand what a "warm" or "hot" blooded horse is. 😳
I am as stupid about horses as horses are anatomically.

There is a lethal white syndrome, but that's due to a defective gene carried by overos (and I think usually frame overos), In my mind, there is no reason that OWLS should ever happen since there is a genetic test you can use to determine if the mare or stallion is a carrier. Unfortunately, sometimes a breeder feels like the potential foal is worth the risk. 😡 <stepping off my soapbox>

Oh but please do use that answer and let me know how it goes. 😉

Don't worry DVM. I'm just as confused as you are and I've worked for an equine vet. I would go out with them while did the coggins and they'd be like "what color is this" and I'd be like uhhhhh "black" and it would be some weird dark brown color.

We have an exam on Friday too. No special consideration here either, not that I really care.

I have the day off. Undergrads have both Thursday and Friday off as part of a "spring" (easter) holiday.

Huh. We've always had Good Friday off. It's a stat holiday here. UPEI/AVC gives Easter Monday off too, but my undergrad didn't.

If anyone has any good diagrams or anything to help study the equine limbs, I'd much appreciate the help. I'm anatomy illiterate.

Sent from my DROID RAZR using SDN Mobile

I thought Dyce had really good diagrams of the equine limb....

I survived round two of exams 😀. Bacteriology was much friendlier than I was expecting. It has been a long 2 weeks and I am glad it is over. Now to pick out a movie to watch on netflix and then head to bed 👍

That sounds like a good sound plan 👍 One that I am going to carry out as well.

:laugh::laugh: me too and sooo true!

I say as I study horse leg/hoof anatomy and distal thoracic limb nerve blocks...

That was not as bad as it could have been. I'm really happy I actually looked at the nerve blocks last night/memorized enough to get by. Horse...:beat:

So frustrated with Immunology right now. I feel like the course has just jumped into all the nitty gritty details without giving any background on the basics. Everything is just numbers and letters to me at the moment.

My sympathies. I just took my final on Thursday. Hopefully I can say good-bye to that course.

Totally might take you up on this. Our test is Tuesday and I'm still catching up on some lectures, so I'll message you when I hit my trouble areas. My bf's housemate lent us some text books so I'll be consulting those as well.

The thing about white from a genetic standpoint is that it is the lack of expression of other colors, which is perhaps why 'white' itself isn't really a color. There is no "white" pigment like eumelanin or pheomelanin.

edit: There are like 5 different ways genetically to arrive at a 'red' dog by the way. It's no less complicated than in the horse. 😉

I was wondering when you would chime in... with all of your genetic colour expertise... please teach me what you know.... :prof: 🙂

That happened to us too. If they have Dr. Sanchez's lectures, look those up cause they are supposed to be the intro.

Failing that my immuno book is for sale, never opened but my classmates liked it a lot 😉

I don't see them on our section on Learn.Vet but maybe I can find them archived somewhere. I know very little about the basics since my only bit of Immuno was freshman year in an intro course. I wanted to take it in college but they decided not to offer it my senior year. 🙁

I may have meant Dr. Debes... first year is sooooo far away sorry.

Had the exact same experience. I learned almost all the material from the first exam from the book. I can lend you mine.

This is literally the only class I used a textbook for, I just found it made so much more sense seeing it presented in a rational order.

Can any of you recommend a good resource for a diagram of the vasculature of the pelvic cavity for the horse and dog? It's driving me crazy.

Haha, yeah totally "learned" all the horse nerve block stuff just long enough for the test. Trust me, no one wants me diagnostically blocking their horse's limb nerves. I will never use that knowledge again.

Haha. I'll check. And are you in exotics right now? I think you might have met Solstice the other day. I didn't really make the connection until afterwards.

yessss loved her! I figured it was you but I didn't wanna be like "hi this is bunnity from SDN calling about your guinea pig pee."

You totally could have done that and I wouldn't have been weirded out.

Haha. Would have been amazing. Although not sure what the attendings would have thought 😛
Is she doing ok btw?

She seems to be doing well. She LOVES her abx, hates the Tramadol though. Haha. I haven't seen any bloody urine except this morning, when she passed this glob that resembles glue from a hot glue gun. It's hard but squishy and like the size of my pink nail which makes me think it can't be a stone. It might be what everyone calls "boar glue" since she lives with my intact male, who attempts to mount her. I never really thought he was successful, but apparently he was. I emailed some pictures of it to the exotic department to see what they thought and have it in a container in case they want me to bring it in and take another look at her.

They're separated at the moment though because they got into some sort of fight Friday night while I was sleeping. I woke up to them teeth chattering at each other and tufts of hair all over the cage. No injuries, but the rescue also said I should separate them so I can attempt to reconcile their relationship later. They still did it a bit today when I tried to reintroduce them slowly on neutral territory and with tons of veggies.

And I know a bunch of that isn't related to what you asked, but I just feel so badly for her. She's stuck in the smaller cage because I don't have room for a bigger one and I feel like a horrible piggy owner. I feel like I shouldn't have brought them home with me since they had to be temporarily placed in a smaller cage and I feel like that is what is responsible for this blow up. But I also didn't want to leaver them her and just have someone check in on them twice a day. 🙁🙁

Really though, three things that should never be in the same room are myself, a horse, and a syringe.

2 exams, 1 PBL case, 2 client simulated interviews, and 7 finals between now and summer:naughty:

All I can think is: Vacation all l ever wanted. Vacation have to get away.

Except I don't know any of the other words so I just keep singing that on loop in my brain. For weeks now.

Wow, when do you guys get out?

We have just 8 more days of class 😀, 1 three minute speech, and 6 finals between us and freedom 😀
