Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I like sitting in the same seat or general area every day, it helps me with learning.

I think we've finally got our seating down after two full weeks now. People kept shifting. Which totally sucks for those of us who like to sit in the same spot. All the other classes (2015, etc.) thought it was totally weird.

Three days in and I am insanely behind due to this whole OOS tuition thing. I can't concentrate for 5 seconds on anything else, not to mention the time it is taking me to fill out petitions, talk to admissions, and rush back and forth to financial aid. This is really not how I wanted to start vet school. Being three days behind right away is really daunting. So is the stress I'm feeling of this happening while I'm trying to study. Molecular Bio and Histology totally blow by the way! 👎

Ugh, I couldn't imagine having tuition issues on top of all this other crud! 🙁 I'm also 3 days in, also feeling very behind already. People wanted to go in last night at 8:30 to study bones. Mind you, we have an anatomical directions quiz Friday (which I STILL am not prepared for). We don't need to know the bones for another couple weeks. I feel like maybe they know something I don't...aaaaaaaaah!

Ooh no... No assigned seats. But I told the girls the seat was taken.

Ohhhh...wow totally my bad...clearly my brain was fried or something...

Em, there aren't enough phalanges and limbs on me to cross for you. :xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf::xf:

I really hope this gets cleared up. Just stay calm and take it one step at a time.

I'm totally one of the shifters. Even in undergrad I rarely sat in the same seat. For morning classes it's pretty much dependent on what seats are left when I drag myself in, but other ones I like to mix it up a bit...

Different note: Survived the first anatomy exam, yay! 😀

It's okay! I promise! Remember how people in vet school are hyper competitive? I think that's what's happening. We are learn differently and we should just focus on what works for us, not others. It's been hard not to give into the temptation of comparison (especially when everyone is SO vocal about their studying habits) but I think people are just nervous and jumpy to know everything. I'm also only 3 days in and already people are getting competitive. Every time I feel competitive I palpate my golden retriever for palpable structures and feel more at ease 🙂

I can't believe petting dogs is part of learning- LOVE!

You are SO right, on all points! 🙂

People are very judgmental, too.
"Oh, you feed your cats Blue Buffalo? That's the highest calorie food!" (not even true)

Some girls are even getting weird about what food they're eating and working out..."Oh, you're eating peanut butter & jelly? Peanut butter has SO much fat in it!" "We have 2 hours for lunch today, I want to go to the gym. You're staying here?!"

I forgot about the whole "competitive" thing...I'm certainly not! I blame a combo of low self-esteem and being slightly older than most of the other first years.

Is this the whole "high school" aspect people are talking about? Or will there be huge amounts of gossip and drama coming as well? :scared: 😛

Finally have internet! Things are going well so far, although I haven't even started orientation yet

My part of the house is mostly set up. I took some time off Tuesday night and yesterday to have some fun. Went to PEI lobster suppers (all you can eat seafood chowder= dream come true) and the beach. Very relaxing and fun. Orientation starts tomorrow :scared: I'm so nervous that I won't make any friends and I won't be able to keep up with school work. Commence panic mode! 😱

Ok, done with day 2. Left anatomy lab after an hour because I couldn't concentrate with 87 other people loudly talking about bony processes.

I think I know how I will study for the first set of exams, but I may change my mind tomorrow!

Day two done for me too 🙂. I enjoyed the classes much better than yesterdays and it was nice to get out of the auditorium and go to lab today, even if it was for dissection. We have like the fattest dog ever and are going back in over the weekend to work on skinning some more. Overall today was a good day. People switched up the seating after lunch, which was not cool, but I liked being able to sit somewhere different in the morning. I wish our class could be flexible about seats but once you sat somewhere in the morning, make that your seat for the day.

First day of orientation at MSU..lots of team building and free food. I am soooo exhausted. Gotta do it all over again tomorrow.
Now time to 😴

Just had my last day of orientation!! Was a little worried I might have to miss it because I'm pretty sure I came down with minor food poisoning last night and apparently a few other people felt a bit off yesterday too. Maybe we were just super tired but I don't know. Definitely feeling better today and am about to go get hammered at our fraternity house. Already have plans to get DP Dough later tonight. Can't wait.

Also can't believe classes start Monday. Holy crap. Have no idea what I'm doing in regards to my anatomy group though.

I feel like I got off to a bad start with my anatomy group. But it was day one of lab and we were the only to not finish on time and had to go back after classes to finish. I was tired and just left after we cleaned up. I did not realize that they exchanged contact info until one of my group members facebook messaged me.

Now I am worried that my group hates me and thinks that I don't like them.

OH HAI.

Almost through week one here at OKSU! So far, no one has had a nervous breakdown (myself included), but I've had a cold all week and been a little miserable - you know when people are like "oh man, are you sick?" and you're like....oh. Yeah, apparently I look that bad. Also, am trying to get my rabies vaccines done (ow), and had to have a fight with the student health center today about scheduling my final booster. Managed to get myself magically fit into their completely absurd schedule by simply saying "well, this is the only time you are open on that day that I am not in class, and it's a rabies vaccine, so I really don't have any options as far as flexibility," and just standing there in a staring match with the receptionist until she caved.

Anyone else doing club fairs and joining things? We had our club fair this evening (holy lots of stuff going on), and I joined two before running away since I'd been at school for 10 straight hours by then!

Your group was NOT the only one not to finish, our group is going back on Saturday to finish. So, did your group go back and finish today without you? That wouldn't be very nice. Which group are you in? I'm in group 9 🙂.

I went back and finished with my group. As soon as we cleaned up the lab, I ran out of there which was around 3:30. (We started woking after cell bio). But I guess the rest of my group hung out and had some group bonding (which of course was without me). I just don't want to come off as a jerk or anything and I feel bad that I left.

I am in group 19. I'm not mad at my group or anything, I just feel like I may have come off like a jerk by leaving as soon as we cleaned up.🙁 I didn't know that there would be group bonding until I got the facebook message.

Don't stress about it. Next time you see them just say "Sorry I dipped out yesterday, I didn't realize y'all were gonna stick around longer" and leave it at that. You don't need to feel like a jerk lol.

I wouldn't sweat it. We also didn't finish on time...we are still dissecting the skin and haven't even started on muscles. I know some other groups have started, and I already feel behind 🙁

Maybe just shoot them all a message apologizing and saying you didn't realize they exchanged contact info? I'm sure that will clear it up, no problem.

Quote of the day:

Someone's on the struggle-bus!!

5PM micro anatomy lab was effing hilarious. So many mushy-brained first years 😀

Thanks NStarz and Emiloo! You guys put my mind at ease! I think I was more worried about making a bad first impression. I sent my group members an email with the notes that I took in lab today and gave them my contact info. They all seemed pretty chill about it, so I am no longer worried.

It also helps to know that other groups did not finish. Our specimen had quite a bit of "adipose tissue" (to put it a nice way) covering the muscles. So we had to clean all of that up before we could really see anything. I think that is what put us behind. After spending some extra time on it, things are now cleaned up but we still have some work to do. At least we were able to identify some of the major muscles that we discussed today.

If it helps, my anatomy group was probably the most behind this week. We were supposed to learn the bones, the extrinsic muscles, and part of the intrinsic muscles of the forelimb by today. And we only have 3 days to do it! Literally, my group was like "lets just transect what we need to and come back over the weekend to look it over." And really, we were behind because we took the time to review and make sure everyone in the group understood everything before moving on...and we also have a very "round" dog that is full of lovely adipose tissue. 😀

So, I feel really confused about it. Should be spend less time trying to understand the muscles and such and go faster through the dissection? I feel like I have a good grasp on things but like I said, the pace was just slow...thoughts?

Your status says you're at A&M...but are you sure you're not in my lab group? 😛 We have a dog (a rather...rotund....one) and a cat, both of which were skinned in a timely manner. We, too, only had 3 days to learn all the same stuff! And we're almost done with the dog...BUT there's only a 3-hour lab tomorrow to finish what we need to get done, and everyone keeps saying the cat is more difficult because everything is smaller and thinner...:scared: We definitely took the time to make sure we knew what we were looking at (and to make sure we were transecting the right stuff), but now we''re gonna have to speed things up considerably. I don't want to come back over the weekend; my in-laws will be in town!

Yea that would suck...so would coming home to the in-laws smelling like formaldehyde! And maybe we are in the same lab group but in spirit! 😀

On the down side, I reread my anatomy lab schedule and I don't get to dissect a cat, just the dog. 🙁

Glad you're feeling better Marino, I'm sure you're group is fine. I feel like I need to get studying Anatomy, I am like clueless about the muscles, it's been 8 years since I was in Anatomy, some of it is coming back to me, but I need a major review to get back up to speed. Hopefully this weekend 🙂.

First day of orientation was today. There was a breakfast, campus tour, lunch, then icebreakers. The icebreakers were silly but that is to be expected. Blue coat ceremony is in a couple of hours. Excited to get my coat but sad because my presenter bailed on me so I'm not sure what I'll do. Tomorrow is kickball + BBQ which I'll miss due to an appointment, beach day Sunday, then first day of classes Monday 😱 It's starting to feel real now.

I need some opinions, please!

I'm ordering my dissection kit from the school, and I have the option to order safety glasses that are made to go over normal glasses, or not. I've got terrible eyesight, but 95% of the time I wear contacts, and I just wear glasses on days when I'm lazy and don't want to put them in. Should I order the safety glasses that are made to go over glasses for those days when I don't wear contacts? Or should I bring an extra pair of contacts with me and put them in my locker in case I ever forget to put them in in the morning? The reason I ask is because I assume that safety glasses made to go over normal glasses are not as comfortable. Is that true?

Not quite sure (I've never seen or heard of them before ) but I can tell you this: if you wear contacts to lab, just be careful. The formaldehyde/embalming fluid can go through soft contact senses and irritate the eyes badly. I wear contacts myself and sometimes wear glasses to lab and have never had the need to wear safety glasses. I just have to be really careful around the cadavers and flush my eyes with saline after lab.

There are signs up in our lab not to wear contacts in lab, so I'd get the safety glasses that go over regular glasses and just wear your glasses to lab.

I am also too lazy (and cheap!) to put in my contacts so I just wore the regular standard safety glasses over my glasses and I was fine. I'm kind of glad safety glasses are required b/c my group was definitely not the cleanest!

Not going to lie, I was feeling quite overwhelmed after the second day, but feeling a little better today after some studying last night 🙂 First week done!

Eh, I wore contacts in anatomy lab. No issues yet 🙂

We have anatomy lab 4 days a week and I don't really want to wear my glasses. I think most people in my class prefer to wear contacts. We have very few people wearing safety goggles. I know I should (and I got some). I've been careful though.

I think I might go ahead and order the safety glasses that don't go over real glasses, because that will encourage me to not be lazy in the morning. If I need to, I can buy my own goggles that are made to go over glasses later on. I wore contacts in my senior year of high school for a whole semester while we dissected a cat that had been soaked in all sorts of chemicals and I never had any problems, so hopefully that will continue to be true!

When I was in chem lab I just got the regular goggles and then regularly forgot to wear contacts the one day a week we had lab. I just ended up putting my goggles over my glasses anyways and it worked fine.

Had a bovine reproductive tract wet lab today!!!! We found twins!! 😀

Blue coat ceremony was fine last night. My other sister flew in last minute to present my coat. She arrived in 5 inch lace up stilettos and asked if there was an open bar 🙄 but at least she was there.

Our group was pretty messy too. Having our dog in about a gallon of preservatives certainly didn't help either!

I have my apartment back to myself today (my mom was here last week because my car had to be repaired back home so she agreed to give me a ride back and then a ride to school and wherever else I needed to go since she doesn't work and I didn't have $200 for a rental car!) and am finally gonna catch up on my studying, I have only studied about an hour so far 👎. Should be caught up by Monday though 😀

First week DONE! I am actually impressed with how much studying and how little sleep humans are capable of! I was a little nervous since I finished undergrad in 2007 and have been lazing about as a researcher since then, but it's possible.

Highlight: equine colic team. We get to assist in surgeries! (!!!!!!!)

Needs improvement: worked 20hrs this week in the lab. I'm not doing this again. I was trying to make up for missing work during offsite COLE week but going from 6AM-11PM every day sucks.

Happy weekend!

Finished with orientation week! Boy was that exhausting! At least the fed us both days
Good news is, my first rotation is equine medicine and surgery followed by small animal critical care 😍 I am so excited! I think these next 8 weeks are going to fly by, and then the work will come lol.

I'm kinda jealous that you get to do rotations first. I imagine it will make you really appreciate all the information they are going to cram into our heads...

I'm getting ready to do some studying... on a Saturday. I never did this in undergrad unless I had a test on Monday. 😱

I am hoping it will. It seems pretty interesting how everything is arranged, but it makes sense. I left orientation already with tons of homework, so even though we have rotations we don't get off work free
