This is why we decided to change our votes. There were 4 holdouts to guilty and no one was budging. We decided instead of causing a hung jury and having them retry the case to just change our votes. I still kick myself for doing that. 😡
 
Disappointed she wasn't found guilty, but I am SO FREAKING GLAD that the trial is just over. I was sick of hearing about it...I guess I never understood why it was such a big deal. Unfortunately, a parent killing their own child is not uncommon, and most of the time it goes unnoticed. 🙁

I was just thinking that myself.

I'm pretty sure I would be awful on a jury. I'm too indecisive, and I can always identify with both sides of an argument. Plus I hate having to argue or sell my opinion to others.

Yeah, this is one of the main reasons I oppose the death penalty. If just one wrongly convicted person is put to death...then the death penalty isn't worth any benefits it might otherwise have.

Exactly. And there have been tons of people who have died under the death penalty that have later been proven innocent. It's sad.

THIS is why I am a very strong proponent of the burden of proof system that we have. Just because a lynch-mob in Florida is convinced she's guilty and wants blood does not mean that they should get it. The prosecution had a case seemingly built upon "But, who else could've done it!". Do I think she was guilty? Yes I do. I am however glad that we have a system that at least tries to prevent wrongful convictions. Don't even get me started on the death penalty either :laugh:. I am however very sad about what happened to that sweet little girl.

BTW, if you think you guys are tired of hearing about it, try living in Orlando! 🙂

Edit: Read "The Innocent Man" by John Grisham (his first non-fiction). You will see the bad things that happen when cases are tainted with bias and prejudice. There have been people a week from being put to death that were saved due to new technology. These people were convicted due to corrupt police, prejudice against mental illness/the homeless, and a "No one else could have done it" attitude.
 
I'm still a firm believer in the appellate system, though. But I think the worst part of this case was the fact that Jose Baez could suck so much as defense attorney, and the prosecution still couldn't win their argument.

I thought he was brilliant. He won a case that 95% of Americans, including the highly ignorant/unexperienced lawyers on CNN, were sure would yield a guilty verdict. Sure, he's a sleezy guy, but he manipulated the case in order to be on the offensive to a point where she couldn't be convicted guilty, and that's all you can ask from C.A.'s standpoint.

Can you tell us what it was like? I got sent jury duty stuff, but I was in the hospital at the time... so I managed to get out of it. But I wanted to go! I woulda rolled in with my IV bag hanging. Just cuz I wanted to play lawyer.

I know dude. I don't care if she's guilty or not, I'm not going to lose sleep over it. It's not like one person on the jury thought she was not guilty, it was all 12 of them! Unanimous! Everyone became so emotionally invested in this and wanted her to be guilty because it would somehow make them feel better about themselves. This is someone's life we're talking about here!

I can feel it in my plums that they got this right. If anyone on here was one of the those people that were so emotionally invested in this case and are enraged by the result, then try telling a patient's family that their daughter who sustained major brain damage in a car accident is never going to wake up again. People gotta keep their cool, such is life. I always say that a key to being a successful person is being able to manage your emotions.

Ever read "The Runaway Jury" by John Grisham? It may be fiction but it shows how one person can manipulate a whole jury.

My highly researched opinion in this case (translated: reading the opinions of two of my friends on FB who are lawyers) agrees that the correct verdict was rendered.

Law is supposed to be emotionless in my opinion. There are rules laid out, facts presented, and the government can only punish someone that is without a doubt guilty. Not guilty by "gut" feeling (i.e. in their plums) that my annoying Facebook friends have, but by facts. The pretty dubious ethics involved in practicing law is actually one of the reasons I shied away from it. I would have been miserable. I was pre-law up until I took gen psych and wanted to know everything there was to know about the brain 🙂.

To change the subject (because i don't want to come off as ignorant for not following the case whatsoever) there's nothing better than a little nap and some greasy food that can cure a hangover. I feel 100% better after waking up earlier this morning.

I actually haven't seen the movie. I was mad when I saw that they changed the trial to a gun case, when in the book it was a widow suing the cigarette company over her husband who died of lung cancer. I guess it's really the same case, a widow suing a manufacturer over her husband's death, but still.

it was still early in the morning (because for some reason, I always wake up really early when I'm hungover) and I had some McDonalds breakfast. Hashbrowns and sausage has never tasted so good.

I loved it! but I was a paralegal so the whole process was interesting to me.

The case was all circumstantial and people have a hard time grasping that idea. The guy "was accused" of stealing a 4 wheeler and trailer. He claimed that he bought it in the parking lot of a hunting store for his friend - the same day it was stolen - and sold it to his friend - the same day it was stolen. He didn't show a receipt or mention any method of payment, and claimed that the person he bought it for could not be contacted and that he did a search but found nothing.

Deliberating was interesting - there was one person who was adamant that he was innocent, and the rest of the people said that they didn't believe him, but they felt there were too many unanswered questions to say guilty. Once they found out about his past from the prosecutor they all felt pretty dumb.

Yeah, I know what you mean with the eye color thing. If I wear blue or teal (which happen to be my favorite colors!) it really makes my eyes look blue.

He never said he was tall! Well, maybe somewhere in this thread he mentioned his height. But he never said he was handsome! 😛

I have never in my life had a sunburn that is red and hurts. Technically a tan is a burn, but it looks much better when it's golden brown instead of beet red.

Too many unanswered questions eh? Hahah. I've lost faith in our legal system. No doubt at one point it served it's purpose well, but we engage in the anachronistic ritual of a jury trial. When it's quite literally impossible to find jurors that have not been in contact with the media. If I was going to law school, I'd have a say in how the voir dire process went down. Cuz right now, it's just bad.

I am tall, and I am dark... this I know for sure. But when we have our c/o 2016 meet up you can judge for yourselves if I am handsome. I've been told I'm easy on the eyes by a few older women. Some crap about my cheekbones being high or something. I don't see it.

Yeah, they wanted to know why the guy didn't produce a sales receipt - he said he had one, and what method of payment. Well, what we didn't know is that he refused to talk to investigators so the prosecution had no idea what he would say on the stand - so he couldn't ask questions that he didn't know the answer to.
