Class of 2016!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yes, I agree. But with his 3.5, we had already planned for him to go to the Post-Bac (which was what his adviser recommended), and so he hasn't done anything about applying to medical schools. I mean, who knew he was going to get a 38 on his MCATs? He just learned that yesterday. He was getting 34's and 35's on his practice tests.

Are you saying that it's not too late to begin the application process? He really hasn't done a thing towards it. Doesn't even have his letters of rec.

Sorry about my ignorance, by he's really been managing the whole thing on his own, and my first post here earlier today was my initial attempt to gather information about this process.

If you're asking if it's too late for him to apply for the upcoming fall, then yes -- he'd need something to do for the next year. He could apply now for fall of 2013 and send in update letters as he takes on activities, or he could wait, apply next year, and enroll in 2014.

What I was saying is that, given his other credentials, he might benefit as much from a unique post-grad experience -- a job, additional research, a community improvement program, whatever -- as he would from a minor boost in GPA. I can also guarantee that he'd have a hell of a lot more fun with his remaining freedom. MAYBE, if a tippity-top-tier school is an absolute MUST, you go the post-bac route and (hopefully) get a 4.0. Otherwise it seems like a waste.

And now I'm starting to smell BS. How did "he has lots of excellent letters of rec" suddenly turn into "doesn't even have his letters of rec" ?

I think the snarky reponses to your initial post stem partly from the fact that it was made in an inappropriate section of these forums -- the "What Are My Chances (WAMC)?" sub-forum is already designated for these types of questions -- and partly because you colored an objective question with some highly subjective, borderline boastful language. I'm sure most parents think their kids are smart and personable, so that information is useless and kind of nauseating.

Anywho, in addition to the factors you've already enumerated, your son's chances at HMS will likely depend on a few additional variables: 1) socioethnic group, 2) university attended, and 3) writing proficiency.

As regards #2, grade scale / inflation will be considered in order to put his grades into context. National reputation / prestige may also matter. To what extent it matters remains a subject of contention, but it definitely seems to be the case that some undergraduate schools are "feeders" for certain med schools. As regards #3, I think a lot can be said for having the ability and willingness to compose thoughtful, sincere essays for the primary and secondary applications. It's up to you to convince the committee that you're worth interviewing, which requires not only a reservoir of interesting experiences from which to draw, but also a penchant for articulating those experiences in the sexiest manner possible.

Thanks... can't help boasting a little, but I understand a bit better. I'll post this in the appropriate place.

SEEEE, the main reason I disregarded this whole thing to begin with. Anyway, back to pictures of cats.

He thinks he's people!

Are you kidding me Mr. Dog? My kid just called me last night to tell me that he got a 38 on his MCATs, which opens up a world of new possibilities. I'm interested... I mean, REALLY, what do you think I'm doing here? Perhaps a better question would be why are YOU trolling this forum questioning people's motives? Interested .NE. Concerned. Two different things. Check out www.dictionary.com

uh, it does open new doors, it doesn't make him HMS material. I am not trolling and I am sure most of the people who regularly post in here will attest to that.

Sorry, it just seems highly suspect you'd name drop Harvard. When people do that instead of saying "can my kid get into a great school" it usually shows you're just concerned about prestige and bragging rights....

You're right... I meant "he'll have lots of excellent letters of rec", from the physicians at the hospital where he's working as a medical scribe, from the charities for which he ran fundraisers, from his time as frat President, from a US Senator for whom he volunteered during his election campaign, and from a couple of family friends who are themselves Harvard alumni, and others. No BS, honest-to-God.

I don't even know where to begin.

Usually you get 1 research letter, 3 letters from faculty who taught you (2 science, 1 non-science), and maybe one more random letter from a physician or a senator.

Okay, I'm going. Sorry about the "trolling" comment. HE hasn't even mentioned Harvard, and I focused on Harvard only to get a better idea of how improved his chances are for the top Med Schools. We live in Virginia, and I'd be perfectly happy if he gets into and attends UVA (or MCV for that matter). You've actually all been very helpful despite my interruption of the "party", so thanks.

BTW, my wife is a Family Nurse Practitioner and a Certified Nurse Midwife, and I got her this stethoscope, http://www.amazon.com/Littmann-Elec...UOTC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1338500890&sr=8-3

and she loves it.

no prob, I think UVA is within reach along with many of the top 20 schools. Just make sure to apply to a few schools outside of the top 20 and 40, just for a back-up. The medical school admissions process is a total crap shoot, as others have mentioned.

You know, that parent post was the most action we've seen in this thread in a while. I kind of miss it.

I want a purple stethescope.

Actually, I want a rainbow one, but I'm not cool enough to pull it off.

(unless I go into peds...)

What??? Not a llama 😱

I didn't even think of it! You're a genius! I want that too. 😀

Also, you guys need to get some of this amazing syrup:

It comes in smaller containers, but I have that one. Yup, the 32 ounce'er. I have taken shots of this stuff before, not gonna lie. AMAZING. Usually I just put it on/in food like a more normal person though.

Preferably in a British accent?
