Class of 2017!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It's really not all that hard - usually the most expensive cost by far is the plane ticket. Korea and China aren't that expensive, either. If you sacrifice on first-world-lifestyle, Cambodia/Laos are even cheaper. Malaysia near Singapore (I always forget the city name) is a nice mix of everything.

The language can be a problem, but it's always fun to work around 🙂 If you do do it (and you're a girl moreso than if you're a boy) it's always good to travel with someone, but it's doable alone 🙂

The only problem is money at the moment. Have you been to all those places?

Many of them 🙂 I figured if I'm in the region, why not bounce around? Other than Singapore and Japan (and increasingly SK), your money can take you pretty far in most places. Visa coordinating and that can be complicated, but a good travel agency in one of the previously mentioned countries helps out a lot.

I've never actually been on a plane either as embarrassing as it is to say. I had always driven everywhere growing up and all of my interviews have been fairly close. Someone needs to push me to travel and see more of the world! I have always wanted to but just haven't had to right people to go with.

It's really hard to learn to travel alone, but I've always seen it as: if you can't enjoy traveling by yourself, how will you really enjoy it with others? I think travel can be a shared experience, but I tend to think of it as separate individual experiences being simultaneously shared. That way I can get there, and if I want to do something my friend doesn't, then I will, and s/he can do whatever s/he wants, and then we can meet up later and share.

The downside of traveling with friends always comes in deciding what to do and passive-aggression (no, we can do whatever you want, I don't care, it's okay) and all that. Learning to travel alone was the best thing I could have done to escape that 🙂

I'd recommend Europe for a first time international traveler. It's generally safer than the US, and everyone tends to have a high level of English, making the learning experience relatively harmless. Japan is also a good one, but it's sooooo expensive, and the English level isn't very high. If you know a native, or have a friend who lives there, though, it can be really amazing. But, if you're learning to travel alone, that can be a good thing - figuring out your way around with signs you can't read, etc., has its own fun to it 🙂

I wish I knew the languages, though :/

Yeah, Europe has always been a place I have wanted to travel. A lot of my friends have been over there and say that they do not want to return to the US haha. But part of me wants to travel to somewhere more exotic.

Ah well, too bad it won't be happening for a while. Thanks for the input though! It was all extremely helpful.

Going to but this every time it's not on the top page of the SDN app.

That means top 10 posts for those of you who don't have the app 🙂

Just saw The Hobbit. I really liked it!

Saw it at the midnight showing and thought it was great in IMAX 3D.. though probably not the best idea considering I had to get up early for work the next morning 😛 Has anybody seen it in the fast frame yet?

Nope. I would like to, though... Just to see.

Right there with you at work. Doesn't help that I work at a university and it's empty since all the students are on break 😡

I have the opposite going on. I'm doing seasonal work with UPS as a "Driver Helper" (basically hand-delivering the packages while the driver sorts or delivers other stuff). While universities are nice and quite, I worked 9 hours straight today and delivered to >230 houses... tomorrows 40 degree rain should be fun haha

Several years ago, I went to the regional UPS location for application to one of these seasonal driver helper positions...

No lie, the warehouse was PACKED with over 200 people for the few spots available.

I decided to skip out. 😀

It's not that expensive... you're doing it wrong (Japan). While in cities, if you don't mind living out of 24hr places.. u can really stretch yourself out... maybe splurge on a cheap hostel for the weekend to get ur sanity back.... You can also easily hitchhike... but that one probably doesn't work out so well if your not Japanese

phew today was a long day. Finally done with the 3 hardest finals of the semester. Got one more tomorrow night and last one on friday.

I have two finals tomorrow. I had an interview today, so naturally, I'm cooked any not able to focus right now. Sounds like this isn't going to go well. :scared:

Sounds cool, but knowing where bills go makes me never want to put one in close proximity to my face.

Eek. 23 hours after I woke up this morning on east coast time interview day is done and I just walked in the door of my house. Time for some egg nog. 😎

It has been a while since I posted just wanted to welcome all the new people to our little soiree...and now back to work. Can't wait for the weekend and a nice little holiday!

That was an ugly game of MNF

I agree wholeheartedly. All I could think while watching this game was "Mark Sanchez is so bad!" But then I looked at the Titans, and Locker wasn't much better. The difference in the game was a 94-yd run by Chris Johnson (who was on my fantasy team in a league that ended last week). 😡:smack::bang:

I avoided CJ like the plague this year - I feel like he went in the third round of our draft
