Just saw that this was happening and I'm so incredibly proud of all my friends that are involved.

White coat die in (Chicago today).

I think several medical schools did this today -- It looks like Case and University of Wisconsin did, anyway. Really powerful.

Just found a thread on this on allo.

It hurts and not in a good way.

I saw the allo thread this morning and was thoroughly saddened. As such, I'm just going to keep my fair distance away from it. 🙁 Glad Lucca and touchpause worked to try and bring people back to reality.

I just saw it... Among other things, that thread was plagued with a profound level of detachment...

I have not yet seen that thread y'all are talking about, but I'm confident that those students who chose to participate in the activism will make MUCH better doctors in the future than those who condemn it. I have great faith in y'all too!

In some environments, love, logic, order, practicality, and compassion are virtually nonexistent. And people clearly have a hard time understanding this. Or perhaps, they are simply unaware. I am fully convinced that some need to shadow inner city youth for an extended period of time. Although obviously, this is unrealistic. You can safely follow a doctor around the hospital. On the other hand, shadowing a kid in Baltimore can get you killed. If anything, aside from the threat of violence, the other inhumane living conditions would be enough to frighten most people away.

However, it's possible that a visit to the doctor can have a lasting positive impact on an otherwise doomed inner city child. "Hey, this person is actually listening to me and cares about my health... I've never met anyone who cared before... There might be a different world out there..." But how can this sort of interaction occur if we remain detached?

Anyone have any good suggestions on what to read to help with this big life transition? Yep, I've already read House of God, which was awesome. I'm looking for something else along the lines of that (humor preferred).

Dig this song, but the video is rad as well. (The guy actually lost his leg in a motorcycle accident when he was hit by a car. The video just takes some license).

First of all I want to say congrats to everyone accepted into the class of 2019 so far, and good luck to everyone else still waiting to hear back 🙂

I just had a quick question that I figured I’d throw out there. I have some interviews in the new year but I want to cancel them so that someone else can have my slot. Is there a best practice for doing so?

I always just find the contact email for the admissions office and email them. Something along the lines of "Dear so and so, Thank you so much for the opportunity to interview at place. I am greatly appreciative of the offer but unfortunately will not be able to attend my scheduled interview date. I am writing to cancel my interview and withdraw from place. Thank you again for the time spent reviewing my application and I wish you the best of luck with this years application cycle. Sincerely, Penguin" (typos cuz on phone)

*edit* and then I put "withdrawal" or "interview cancellation" as the subject line

Put your aamc number in parentheses in the subject, and also below your full name in the email body.

okay great! thank you both!!

Just a shoutout that @researchismymiddlename is awesome and her list of questions will be so incredibly helpful to me.

I'm psyched to put a bunch of thought into this over the next few weeks. This is great for me because I like seeing my thoughts on paper. I guess I've been trying to work against myself lately.

SO PUMPED!

WAT? NO LIMITS? You are a premed deity. Extra cookies for you.

Jussayin', but Sinai > NYU (not because they didn't give me any sugar *cough*, but because I'm going to be at Sinai's second look). 😉

@claduva94 glad to have a companion. We'll marvel at our Cleveland-bound comrades from afar.
Haha, you had me at cookies🙂

Congrats to all those who got accepted to Case, you guys are rock stars!! I'm not sure how they can pass over HellaNutella and Claduva though:nono: Also, congrats to Lamel on the NYU II

Oh my gosh you guys. I honestly had no idea I was so obvious.

Sunflower already knows this, but she has the exact same first/last name as one of my best friends (same full initials too)... so I've accidentally sent my totally non-medically related friend some very odd texts. x____x I got a message back yesterday from her going "dafuq is Case?"

I ended up putting the sunflower emoji next to your name in my phone! No more confusion!

Awhh booo @ridethecliche! 🙁 Not a fan of the rejection sprees Cornell and SF have been on. Glad you've got another NYC interview coming up.

This is what I did today:

-Came in late-ish because the first case didn't start till 10.

-First case for tumor collection was a below the knee amputation. Watched a little bit of it then ran to pathology to collect.

-Went back to the office, changed out of scrubs, and met up with the awesome surgeon that plays santa and wandered around the pedi wards for 2 hours giving out presents to little kids. Fought tears multiple time when kids that the nurses said "were having an awful week with treatment and had been really sick" were laughing and playing with 'Santa' and other staff. Too many hilarious stories to tell from 2 year olds following him around and carrying too many toys for their arms such that they were falling everywhere. It was hilarious. To the sadder thing of 55 day old infants that had been in the pedi ward for pretty much their entire life...Parents got Dunkin cards because they damn well need them.

-Left early to get something to eat lunch (it was already 3 30 PM) and run to another case to collect other specimen.

-Come back to office to do paperwork etc. Talk to a PA about her experience working with kids and talk about what we did today. Give PA a hug when she gets huge wells of tears in her eyes from discussing her first rotation (pedi burn unit) and talking about a family that she became really close to. Turns out that one of the her first patients needed multiple amputations and when she bumped into pt and family at the hospital months later (they were close) the kid pt asked her if she'd watched the surgeon take said kid's leg. She just lost it.

-Now I'm finishing up more paper work, chugging coffee so I have the energy to hit the gym and hoping to be in bed by 10 because I have to be at work at 6 30.

I just want one acceptance already so I can concentrate on work stuff instead of being more of a basket case than I already am.

Hahaha love it!!!!! That's too funny. Your last name is "Nutella" in my phone 😉 I love the sunflower emoji!

Yes, I'm also sorry to hear of the widespread waves of rejections 🙁 and I'm super stoked for No Limits on NYU!!!

Wow this app process is humbling. I was fortunate enough to get an acceptance in mid October, but since then it's been all holds and rejections (inluding all my state schools :rage:). It's just that after my acceptance early on, I got cocky and thought that I'd be accepted everywhere I interviewed. It's really hard not to let this process get to you, even after getting an acceptance.

The New York schools are absolutely killing me!
No news from Mount Sinai yet, even though they said they would release post interview decisions this week! I'm getting very antsy to hear from them, they are one of my top choices so far
No II from NYU today, but then again, no rejection from Cornell today either.
The waiting game is well and alive!

When are you going to be there? I hope it's jan 26/27. I'm planning to make a little vacation out of the weekend before!
Oops, I thought you had interviewed there already lol. I actually picked the first 4 January dates (so not the 26/27) because the 12/19 one was too short notice.

Wait, what first four january dates? They had other ones open? Which ones? I might call to move mine because I'm doing an interview that same friday of my interview and it'll be rough with my work schedule. We could split hotel/car as well.
Are you doing the MD/mph interviews?

1/9, 1/12, 1/15, and 1/23. Yeah, you might wanna try calling because 2 interviews in one day is rough. No, I only applied to just MD.

EDIT: My interview date preference from highest to lowest is in that order too (earliest to latest).

If 1/9 is available I'd take it. Did you rank them that way or call them. If you want to call and confirm to try to get the same date let me know. I'd be down to try to coordinate if you are.

For me it also depends on the MPH date availability though.

I did rank them in that order, with 1/9 being highest. I have not called them; I thought they will email you a confirmed date later?
