Don't call in a favor unless you're positive you want to be there. Also: I'd be surprised if it did much. I only know of 1 person that called in a "favor" in that her dad was on the admissions committee and got her in despite low stats and iffy EC. They say they try to avoid conflicts of interests, but it would be hard to reject your colleague's daughter imo.

Einstein WL'ed me, so clearly they think I can hack it out there, or they would have rejected me. What a letter can change is the hierarchy among those waitlisted. Showing you really want to be there and having people vouch for you if they went to and/or trained at a school and are now esteemed can swing the pendulum I think. My gpa is on the lower end of their range, but not by much. My EC's, publications, etc are fine.

I do want to go to einstein, but I'm starting to get exhausted with the process I think. Being in NYC wouldn't put me too far from home (<2 hrs), but I Jeff really sold itself incredibly well.

I'd have to see the money from any school to decide whether it's for me or not. While I'm sure the debt would be paid off, my family cannot back me up at all in terms of living expenses etc. so it really does matter.

Yeah I moreso meant that calling in favors and then not matriculating is kind of a lame move. It sounds like you might want to go to Einstein, but you're not sure. Jefferson throws around some money these days (not tons, but say 10k/yr) while I haven't heard much from Einstein.

Also: in terms of rank corresponding to aid. That really isn't the case. A lot of top schools give no need based aid (or its a joke) but give merit aid as they fight over top candidates. It wouldn't surprise me if Jefferson ends up being the cheapest option for you if you manage the 10k scholarship.

I am! Are you as well?
I'm not, but I am starting to think I wish I was. I am taking a Fundamentals of Public Health class now (I go to a small college, so I am taking it online through the university I am going to attend med school at) and am really enjoying it. I doubt that I would be able to switch, so I was trying to gauge if many students did it.

This is a conundrum. It ain't easy to weigh one school against the mere possibility of another.

I wonder about the details of the interventions that would take place on your behalf. Would you feel like you'd be promising to go to Einstein if they accepted you? Would your advocates feel that way? If you just want to say that it's your first choice, that to me implies that your ultimate decision would not be taken for granted. But on the other hand, perhaps a lack of commitment would reduce whatever chance there is that this could make the difference for you. And your friends might send mixed messages on your behalf. It's tough.

Ultimately of course you'd clearly be happy to be a student at Jefferson or Einstein. It's stressful now but the stress will end.

Overheard in the hallway walking back from the hospital cafeteria.

Woman: The doctor says that you should lay off the salt.
Man: What?
W: You should eat less salt.
M: What about the sauce?
W: Salt, honey, salt.
M: Oh, I should eat less salt!
W: That's what I've been saying!

Some elderly couples are hilarious. I just thought it was really cute.

To add to that I think it's clear if you had the potential to call in a favor (because it's not like asking a favor from your colleagues is "free", you don't want to do this for anyone) you'd want to make sure that said applicant would absolutely go there.

I think in this situation it's not particularly difficult, because @ridethecliche doesn't have a ton of merit aid at school X (correct me if I'm wrong). THAT is a conundrum. Aka accepted to Cincinnati or something with full tuition scholarship, but really wanting to go to duke. Duke is DEFINITELY your #1...but the financial discrepancy is massive so without aid you'd DEFINITELY not attend Duke...however in that case you can say "well, this school ended up being 200,000 dollars cheaper so....yeah."

Either way it sounds like RTC isn't super hyped about einstein, so if I were him I'd be happy with Jefferson and be pleasantly surprised if I got into einstein (I'd also write love letters to einstein) but I wouldn't try to call in every favor in the book if I wasn't sure I'd go to einstein.

FWIW RTC my friend with nothing absolutely stellar received 10k a year at Jefferson, and that was before they received 100 million as a donation. Odds are you'll get something, so chin up and congratulations!

there's an elderly couple in this video which is particularly heartwarming/adorable...hey who started chopping onions in here!?

Public health courses are super fun! Does your school (if you've decided on one) offer a combined program? Most of the combined programs I looked into had a late application option (during M1 or even M2) since the "concurrent" MPH is typically done between M2 and 3.

Also it is not too late for an MPH if you can't so it concurrently-- I believe some people do them during residency, or even go back for an MPH once they are practicing when they find that it is useful for their work.

The issue is I'm planning on peacing this summer so I need to make a decision, hopefully before I leave. I guess I could make things happen with limited internet, but it's a big but.

I really liked Einstein at my interview, but it's hard to get jazzed about something that's likely not going to become a reality, i.e. keeping expectations in check. If I get jazzed about Einstein and nothing comes of it then I'm exactly where I am, which is much happier than I was pre-jeff. I called Einstein today and asked what the movement is like historically in the regular waitlist and the person was like... "well not much if any, but there's still a chance!"
At this point, the only way I can see myself getting off that list is sending them an update and having letters sent to them as well. If I go this route, I will let the writers note that it might come down to money if Jeff is better on that front.

UMass I'm just going to let run its course because that's how they do things. I might write them an update and interest as well, but not a total love letter.

I didn't know about the late application thing. I will be sure to check that out. Thanks for the info! <3

Isn't this cool?!!!!!

Hey guys, a friend of a friend of the family applied this cycle and only got into one of the Puerto Rican schools. His parents are from PR and I believe he speaks Spanish. If it's one of the accredited ones, he'll be a USMG, right? And I'm assuming he'd be facing an impossible fight if he reapplies next year since he's turning down a USMD. I did some thread searching here, just wanted to confirm.

It looks like he will be a USMG. The PR schools are on this list:

Second Looks--so not helpful because they are so helpful.

I am so sore, so tired, and am nursing the Headache of the Century, but second look was a w e s o m e . I thought I got good exposure to the school via interview day (I even stayed an extra day), but second look took that a whole order of magnitude further.

I totally agree. A school I thought would be easy to withdraw from became a very viable option because I foolishly attended their second look.
You'd be a great addition to the already amazing class. But good luck with the pending Penn scholly announcement!

Someone definitely enjoyed their second look ... maybe a bit too much? :hungover: 😛
I'd want to say that I "partied too hard," but it's probably an even split between jet lag, lack of sleep, general overwhelmed-ness with missed work, flight delays, and then maybe the free tequila. 😉

Work hard, play hard.

I think that's the unofficial motto of MS1s nationwide.

Soon I'll have attended my second second look and I'll be very interested to see how they compare. Quite different schools in several ways.

I was lucky to get to do that in undergrad (my first time traveling alone), and fortunately I hated one of the schools.

I no longer know how to "compare" my remaining options.

The crazy doesn't come out till later.
The kindness also sometimes doesn't come out till later as well. 日久见人心。

Wait so I have a legitimate question. Why does everyone on SDN indicate an edit to their initial post by being all like '*edit*' - my question isn't about the syntax used... but like... why is it necessary to inform everyone that we have edited our post since we originally wrote it. Is there a story behind this? Or is it just a common internet forum thing.

Their crazy or yours?

I plead the fifth?

Then again, I did end up dating someone for a bit that told me about 3 months in that she was married (separated ish, but married). So....

Because Ninja edits are annoying as heck.
