Class of 2020 - HPSP Scholarship Applicants (Navy/Army/Air Force)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
there are two possible board dates, jan 12th and jan 26th. jan 26th is the for sure it will happen so my recruiter just says to be sure it is the jan 26th but it may happen on jan 12th

as staapes confirmed with recruiter, it already happened (which I believed so because there are not many direct recruiter app anyways, likely much less than hpsp)

THE WAIT IS TOOOO LONGGG

I was hoping for this week... looks like that is a loss. Fingers crossed for next week though.

umm navy had their third boards already and the army no words to be heard

is this the reality????

Officially selected for Navy HSCP - hell yes. Hell. Yes.

I put HSCP as a priority over HPSP on my application, so that works out perfectly!

Just FYI for those stat-mongers - oGPA 3.2, sGPA 3.8, bcpGPA 4.0, 21 AA DAT

Congrats everyone! Are y'all still waiting to hear back from the Army to make your final decisions? Or is Navy your first choice?

I have been rooting for you. Congratulations! First UConn and now this. You have it made. Now go celebrate 🙂

This call was huge. I'll be at 9.5 years active duty when I start dental school, 13.5 when I finish, and 18.5 when I finish payback assuming a 1 year AEGD. This carries me to my 20.
Holy crap. You're going to make baaaaaaaaaaaaaaank with that much prior military service. You're a genius to go the HSCP route.

It's a no brainer for anyone applying from active duty. I've also got the post 9/11 GI Bill on account of my current service. So I don't have to worry about tuition either, as long as I go in-state which I am.

Congrats to all those receiving scholarships! Does anyone who has been awarded the Navy HPSP know the timeline for commisioning? What are the next steps?

I want to be you.

Bravo, my good sir (or ma'am). Good on you.

My recruiter said I won't swear in/enlist until probably a month or so before school starts (which is in August). I don't know, though, it seems like people usually swear in before then? I'm not sure, that's just what she said. Anybody else?

To everyone who is waiting for Army HPSP 4 year,

I just dig around and got a number of someone higher than my recruiter, who confirmed that the board on Jan 12th did not review any 4 year applications. All 4 year applications will be reviewed on the Jan 26th. It will be a 3 day board review and the result should be out before Feb12th.

What schools did you get into? Just curious.

Congrats to those who have received the Navy HPSP!

In order for me to have great chances at the HPSP what DAT score would I need? My current GPA right now is a 3.91. What other stats or factors go into deciding besides health conditions?

Which branch(es) did you apply to, and what programs (HPSP/HSCP)?

I've been completed with Army since October. I thought I'd be in this January board for Navy but I don't know what happened. My packet was sent up the first week of January. It was for HPSP.

Ps there are 75 4-year slots available for the board on Tuesday. As for 3-year applicants, I was told a couple of weeks ago at the AMEDD office that the results from their most recent board aren't yet official so they can't notify the applicants.

Is it still possible to apply for the 4 year scholarship after the board on Tuesday or is it too late?

I'm going to guess over 1000.

lol nice joke, anyways the number that made it to the final board will be around 130-150 applications for 75 spots (an army recruiter told me this at UNLV interview) and they tend to select 90 people because some drop (people who cross apply to other branches and get in navy, for example).

it is still possible. however, if you don't do anything yet, beware it will take you almost 2 months to complete (4 weeks at best) so you will be boarding in march at best.

150 applications for 75 spots for a full ride through dental school? Forgive me that is a little hard for me to believe when you consider that over 10,000 people apply to dental school each year.

yea im serious, this number, as I was told, is not higher than 200 applications for sure. Plus many people get in their state school and/or have parental help. I read somewhere that as long as your debt is below 300k, HPSP is sometimes a worse deal (some people above obviously know that and apply/pick HSCP). Plus, not everyone passes the really stringent physical exams, or have something in their backgrounds that prevent them from joining.

HPSP is not a full ride scholarship. you pay back with 4 years of time, possibility of not dating your dream girl because you are tied up, etc.

and most importantly, who knows when will be the next war? lol I know for sure if war happens, army dentists will be the ones just right adjacent to the battle field.

I think it is a full ride scholarship- full ride means everything in cost of attendance is paid for, which HPSP does + gives more (via the stipend and sign-on bonus). It is a service scholarship, true, but still a full ride.

You are right about Army Dentists being deployed, however.

Lol nice point about dating your dream gir but who knows you might actually find a girl during your service.. I still think hpsp/hscp(for state school) is a great deal. You are graduating with virtually ZERO debt and are guaranteed very close if not 100k salary(not all being taxed) for at least 4 years(if you decide to stay).

Ugh, this wait is so stressful. I thought maybe they would have met on the 12th so we would find out by the 26th. My bro finds out if he matches for OMFS tomorrow, so this could have been a hopefully good two days for us. I'll still keep praying then!

Congratulations to all of those who received the Navy HPSP/HSCP! This an exciting time for you guys! 🙂

Does anyone happen to know how many 4-year Navy scholarships are available after the January board? What are my chances when boarding in February? Thank you for your help!

My package for the Navy HPSP was sent to QC in December, but it bounced back. After 3-4 weeks of silence, I found out in the first week of January, from a new recruiter, that my previous recruiter wrote my birthday wrong on my fingerprint cards and that they were moving to a new station. Of course by that time, the deadline for the January board had passed too. I fixed that small error with this new recruiter, and I plan to resend my application to the February board on Monday.

Ya I agree. I have heard that number before. I cant believe more people don't apply for this scholarship. But it makes sense considering a lot of people get into their state school, don't pass physical exams, and don't want to deploy. I am sure that eliminates a TON of people. But, I am just glad its not more competitive so no complaints here haha

Yeah like me I wanted to do it, did all the paperwork and exams and everything and then i couldn't join due to a medical issue.. So that sucks. Lol

to add in your comment, it also makes sense a lot of people got screwed by inefficient, clueless, indifferent recruiters who cant do their work for crap and can't submit the package without big errors.

Yes. This happened to me but for good reason. I was late for army and got navy instead haha..

What type of medical issues can prevent someone from getting the scholarship?

You have to be medically cleared for military service. Vision, hearing, you can't have certain previous injuries, some surgeries. Sometimes previous sports injuries can prevent you from being cleared, etc..
