Class of 2020 - HPSP Scholarship Applicants (Navy/Army/Air Force)

Remember- they do issue waivers! But yeah, this is the military after all. They need healthy, fit people who can tolerate a wide range of situations/environments.
 
I know the Army HPSP board meets tomorrow (26th), however I have recently been accepted to my top choice and its going to cost be roughly 135K more over four years than the school I currently plan to attend. My top choice is requiring a non-refundable $1,500 deposit by Feb. 12th. Without the HPSP I simply cannot afford to attend this school. Does anyone have any reason to believe that I would know if I was awarded a scholarship by roughly Feb 5th (to give me enough time to submit the paperwork and deposit)? I know someone will probably say "just gamble with the deposit...if you don't get HPSP you don't have to matriculate there." However, I can't afford to throw away $1,500 on another deposit either....I'm still a broke college kid, FWIW.

Ummm I think you may be cutting it close with the time deadline. I don't know how fast the Army will go considering this is their only board date. However, I heard back about my acceptance for the Navy HPSP a little over a week after the board. So maybe their is hope for you? But I wouldn't bet on it. Anything with the government is super slow...

Sorry I don't have any info to give you any insight, but I went through that situation too. After getting in Dec 1, I was hoping to find out for the Army HPSP on the 19th and be able to make a decision based on whether I would receive the scholarship. I also didn't have 1k lying around to risk on a deposit, so I ended up only putting it down for my state school, VCU. I am happy with my decision because it was a toss-up between VCU and Pittsburgh in the end anyway. Hopefully you will receive a decision sometime next week and can go to your top choice.
 
Does anyone have a pros/cons list between Navy and Army? Is one branch better for specific residencies than the other? I've seen some posts on this, but nothing recent. Just trying to get some decent feedback. Thanks.
 
I have been informed that my kit has been put into the February boards for some reason. Not sure what happened, as we had it sent on the deadline day. Perhaps that was cutting it too close. I am still being told not to worry, but I was hoping to have had it by now! Now another month of waiting...

Well, you might consider the likelihood of whether you'll wind up in the middle of the country (and whether that's something you prefer or not). If you're in the Navy, based purely on location of their bases, you're more likely to wind up somewhere coastal. This is, of course, not guaranteed - many people find themselves assigned to Great Lakes, IL and other locations that aren't on the coast. That might be one of many things to consider. You might also ask anybody you know in either branch and ask them about their experience - ask them if they had the chance to, whether they would switch branches. Ask them for their honest, no bull-**** answer, too - no "branch loyalty above all else" answer.
 
FYI - my Navy recruiter said that all the Navy HPSP and HSCP slots (for dental, at least) were filled with the January board (and the couple earlier ones) and that they'll only be offering alternates from February onward.

Could be nonsense, but she had no reason to mislead me on it, so...

sounds about right. Most if not all of the scholarships are usually given out on the first board.

I certainly hope not, especially because the only reason I got pushed back to the February board was because my recruiter wrote my birthday wrong on my fingerprint cards...

Looking at previous threads, we may still be ok. Let's just keep waiting until we get official news. Not discrediting anyone's info, but judging from what has gone on with this process, it seems like everyone is in the dark.

Just spoke with my Navy recruiter three minutes ago (applying this coming summer).

My recruiter has verified what @staapes57 and @AVB2104 are saying.
ALL 61 4-year HPSP Navy Dental scholarships were given out as of this last Board.

I hope you guys still get them if someone turns it down. If you did apply with other branches, I hope you're successful there too.

dont worry guys there will be people that turn down the scholarship. Also you still have good shot of getting hscp. 2 years ago I boarded in MARCH yes March... I didn't get hpsp but was offered hscp. It was my mistake for not applying early but I still got some..
 
I don't understand! And still don't want to believe it. Just last year people boarded in February and still got it. Sigh....

Understand this: they select alternates for a reason. People DO turn these scholarships/programs down. Getting on the same page with a recruiter that knows his or her stuff is never a bad thing. PM me.

Same for me with Army recruiters in NYC. My guy is the MAN. He single handedly got me to the board in 2 months where my Navy guy just stopped contacting me. Message me if interested for next year. Good luck, everyone.
 
So my recruiter is asking for my letter of acceptance. I'm on the wait list at my #1 choice, and have accepted at another school in the mean time. Anyone know how long I'll be able to wait on my #1 to come to their senses and offer me admission? I'm willing to wait, but not willing to lose my HSCP scholarship.

Since it's HSCP and they're not paying for the schooling, it's not as critical for you to give them the letter of acceptance from the school you're actually going to attend. Just send them the letter of acceptance you do have, and that will suffice. You can change it later. <--I was told that by both of my recruiters (Army and Navy).

They told me that whatever letter I send them, they will begin to detail my orders to that location. The location matters a lot because BAH is based on it and they need to know well in advance to cut my orders. This means that I won't be sending in any letter until either 1) I'm in at my top choice or 2) the deadline...I just don't know when that deadline is. I want to give them as much time as possible to pick me off the wait list but as noted I'm not willing to lose my scholarship.

Ah, yes, I forgot that you're currently Active Duty. Yeah, that makes sense that they're asking for you to give them the right school letter. My thoughts are: you're better off sending them the letter you do have rather, thereby guaranteeing everything falls in line, rather than hoping you get snatched off the wait list and accidentally giving up the HSCP slot. Worst case scenario is you send them the letter you do have, you eventually get accepted into the school you really want, then you tell them you need to change it. They'll probably fuss about more paperwork and deadlines and anything else that comes to their aggravated minds, but it will probably be something they can accommodate. I trust that you wouldn't be the only person to have ever done that.
 
what about for HPSP? Will I be allowed to change my school if I do it before I commission?

My Navy recruiter told me you can do this for HPSP, yes. They are also willing to convert a 4-yr to a 3-yr if you opt for UoP.
 
If your Navy packet is going to the February board, don't lose all hope. I'm not 100% certain if this works for the Navy, but if you get put on the order of merit list, you will still have a chance at a 4 year scholarship should anyone decide to turn it down, or at the very least a 3 year scholarship for next year.

Did you end up getting it? I think I remember your posts in old threads.
 
I just had the army come to my school to present. I honestly thought it was a lot more competitive than they were saying. They said they typically give away 65-75 a year and usually have around 120 applicants. They said if you have a 3.5 GPA with a 20 DAT you have a good chance. If you have a 3.6 and above a 20 then you are practically a shoe in. Just wanted to let you guys know! I didn't hear about boards or anything, just typical informative meeting.

Now I just gotta get through the MEPS....my recruiter sent me a prescreen to fill out....it's not looking too good fellas 🙁.

Just wanted to let you guys know that my Army recruiter informed me today that my packet was officially taken to "pending board results" meaning that it was boarded today. He said the results should be out in at least 3 weeks.

Its true its only a .1 difference. But if you think about it, there are probably a ton of pre dental applicants that have between a 3.5 and 3.59, but a lot less have a 3.6 or above. In GPA, .1 seems to be a big difference. Its probably that way because most with a 3.6 don't apply for HPSP because they probably get into a state school or something with a cheaper option.

They recently moved from a ~80 questionnaire to almost double that. Unless you have some autodisqualifiers such as asthma, headaches... You should be fine. I wrote down about my fractures and just had to get some paperwork. Since you are so early in the game, you should be fine getting any waivers you may need.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the MEPS only lasted 6 months or a year? I'd ask your recruiter so it doesn't expire before your boards

MEPS lasts for 2 yrs. Check your PM.

Spoke with my Navy Recruiter again.

There WILL be Navy boards in February and March- these boards will be done to create an Order of Merit List for 3-Year HPSP awards.
 
Does anyone know the timeline for Navy HPSP once the the recruiter told you that you've been selected? When do we get the final select letter to make it official and when do we commission?

This is correct. I want to be a military dentist and serve, and I am quite excited about the chance do it as a career. So this is my top priority, and I want to be early so that I have a good shot at a scholarship.

For commissioning- I'm applying to dental school this summer, starting dental school next July/August, and my Navy recruiter told me the earliest I could commission would be May 2017.
