Class of 2020 - HPSP Scholarship Applicants (Navy/Army/Air Force)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm set with Army as well, just waiting on my acceptance letters to arrive in the mail.

same for me. im only applying to army.

I just feel lucky to have an acceptance letter to submit so my chance is not shot down. too many waitlists this year. I got a lot of waitlists too.

is there honestly nobody else that is currently applying? this thread is so quiet compared to last year's

So my recruiter and I talked over the phone yesterday and we are starting my application. I read somewhere that all documents have to be submitted by Dec 25. Even if it's too late in the cycle, I'm going to continue the process so at least I will be considered for the 3 year scholarship. How realistic is getting all the documents in on Dec 25 if I just started now?

how far are you in the process?

its honestly up to your recruiter to decide how soon he/she schedules you for MEPS. But I know official DAT score report takes 2 weeks to arrive, which u need. and idk how long ur official transcript will take to arrive.

good thing we have some consistent information.

Yes. So now instead of waiting for Dec. 1, we get to wait a whole month more :smack:

Does anyone in here know if you can use the GI Bill with either the HPSP or HSCP program with no prior service? There are a few threads on this, but they all seem out of date and there seems to be no definitive answer.

You can't use gi bill on hscp or hpsp with no prior service. They made an announcement like a few months ago confirming this..

Army applicant. Waiting on MEPS. Everything else is submitted. My recruiter told me that everything needs to be in by December 30th for the Jan board. Good luck, all.

That's "official"? Do you happen to have any sort of document where this announcement was made? It's been so frustrating trying to track down the set-in-stone answer, and if you COULD get the GI Bill with no prior service with the HSCP, it could make it more valuable than the HPSP for some less expensive state schools...

While you personally wouldn't be able to use the GI Bill benefits, I talked to a Captain (O7) in the Navy and he said he can transfer the GI benefits to his children or spouse--so essentially his children's college education is mostly paid for.

What about ways to get undergraduate debt paid for? Anybody know of HPSPers or HSCPers who have been able to get their undergrad loans paid off in addition to the HPSP or HSCP scholarship?

I don't have the document anymore but they recommended those who had been receiving the benefit to return the money. I remember them saying that they will try to recoup everything..

Are you waiting for the 2 interviews from the Navy? I think I just finished both last week. 1 was from a navy dentist.

Yes. Why'd you say you think you finished them? My recruiter says I should be on January board if we get everything in by the third week of December and he doesn't seem to be stressing... Well I am!!! I need to get these interviews done ASAP

Because for the second one I just met with some other person who went over my packet and when I scheduled that she just called an "interview" so I wasn't sure if I got both done, or if I need to do another interview with another professional. Lol but yes I'm hella stressin!!

Hmm sounds weird. If she called it an interview it may have been one, but just very informal. My recruiter was acting like as long as we are in for the January board, then we will get it!!!

Just received the second interview today. It's definitely another CAPT O-6 phone interview lol so no business casual for me whoooo! But seriously we better get that Jan board!

Anybody is worried abt world events these days?

You have to have a certain amount of years in service to transfer benefits to children/spouse. If I recall, staying in the bare minimum would not qualify you to do such actions.

I asked this a month ago, but no one wants to admit they are concerned. I already signed so there is no going back. But yall acting like dental officers are above everyone else in a time of war. They aren't

Hey guys, so I've been in the mix for the HPSP Navy scholarship for several months now. I just recently got all of my medical history straightened out and will soon be heading to MEPS. I was wonder if you guys could give me more information on why you chose HPSP. Obviously it's a great deal coming out of school debt free, serving your country, and getting extra practice / skills while getting a good, competitive salary. You also have the comradery with your fellow soldiers. What else influenced your decisions? For me, I've had family members that have went in and loved the comradery and the lifestyle. Are there other great things that I've yet to learn about?

You may also want to consider the HSCP if you're interested in the Navy. They don't pay for your education, but they do pay you a ton more money while you're in dental school (and you make more money during the 4 years of payback since you're paid at a higher rate due to active duty time). It doesn't make sense over the HPSP if the school you're going to is expensive, but if the cost of tuition/fees is somewhere around $35k or less, it may end up making sense for you over HPSP.

I'm guessing you mean $350K?

I've heard of HSCP. I'll run it by my recruiter!

I meant $35k per year, but probably even as high as $45k per year would still be worth it. Espeeeecially for anyone looking to make a career in the Navy (since time spent in dental school counts towards retirement only on HSCP and not on HPSP.

Hey all,
Just found this thread today. Finishing up my applications for the Army and Navy HSPS, just waiting for clearance for my MEPS and for the 2 interviews with the Navy dentists.

I had a question, I haven't told my recruiters yet that I'm applying to both the Army and the Navy, from what I gathered reading through this thread I'm allowed to apply to both at the same time, but some recruiters don't like this?
They are going to find out soon, they are both filing waivers for me to get cleared for the physical.
I do prefer Army over Navy, should I be upfront with the recruiters or let them find out on their own? I'd appreciate any advice.

I've been fully up-front and honest with both my Navy and Army recruiters and told them about my application to the other branch. They have been professional about it, though I'm sure there are some recruiters that will not be.

FYI, it's virtually impossible that they won't find out about your application to the other branch during the process, and it will look like you're shady once they do find out (if you didn't tell them beforehand).

For example, you need to do MEPS. When you do MEPS, you have to select which branch receives the paperwork. If you do it all through the Navy and then the Army recruiter talks to you about MEPS, you'll say "Oh, yah, I already did that." <--- recruiter now knows you've done MEPS with another branch.

Just my 2 cents.

I am applying for both army and navy as well. From the first time i met the recruiters i told them its a competitive spot and i am applying for both branches because i am really hoping to get commissioned and both of my recruiters were more than understanding. I think its better if that info came from your mouth than a 3rd person. I did get some few negative comments during the meps but i ignored it with a friendly smile.

Did anyone get any scholarship for the navy this month? My recruiter said board was meeting this month and he said he will get b to me as he hears anything new. I thought i would hear something this week but nothing.

I am going to contact my recruiter monday but i was wondering if its me or no new ppl were selected yet.

my Navy recruiter texted me on Friday saying the results should come out next week for the December board... I hope they do

My recruiter told me there was not a December board for Navy. Just a January one.

Haha! That's the one thing I dislike the most about this process...the recruiters' misinformation!

Yeah I'm not sure when the board is... What's more annoying is that I submitted my app for the November board, but I accidently left off the date of attendance to a junior college on my CV and my application got sent back. All I wrote on the CV to correct ir was "June 2013"...kinda pissed I did all that work to get it in early for nothing. I mean I know it's my fault about the date, but I also sent them my transcripts.. Okay rant over.

I'm a bit late to the game, but since I got my acceptance and am considering the debt load, I went by an AF recruiter the other day and the lady there got me in touch with a health profession person.

So---have we decided if the AF will hold boards after the new year? Here's the response from my contact after I just asked for further information on the subject:

Mr. ****,

Congratulations on your first step in becoming an Air Force Health
Professional! Please fill out the 2 attached worksheets and return them to
SSgt. ****. He will contact you via
phone/email once the 2 worksheets are reviewed for qualifications to include
education, medical, and training requirements. We look forward to facilitating
your application and you joining our Air Force Health Profession family!
Please give SSgt. Some time to return your email, he is on leave and won't be
back till after the new year. As it stands, all selection boards are closed
for year. But allow SSgt. **** some time to find out if we will have
additional selection boards in the spring.

Very Respectfully,

*******
Flight Administrator

Is that a vague way of saying, "we're done for the class of 2020" 4 year scholarships?

Hey everybody - do you guys know (and by know, I mean you have actually spoken with a person who has done it) if you can take out loans while on the HPSP? My expenses come to more than the ~$2,100 per month and it seems there has been no clear answer. Some people have said that since you're considered "fully funded" by the school, they don't allow you to take out loans, but others have said the opposite. What about private education loans even?

Or, does anybody in here know of a great thread where there are a ton of HPSP recipients all grouped together where I can ask this?

All I've heard about this was during my NYU interview, a student said her roommate took out loans to help pay for living in New York while on HPSP.

I have my Navy interviews tomorrow. Any tips? Seems like every post I have read makes it out to be a sinch.

Just an FYI to anybody applying to the Navy - just spoke to my recruiter and she said that there are exactly 61 HPSP scholarships available and 15 HSCPs available. She said that so far, only 18 HPSP applications and 1 HSCP application has been board reviewed, and she expects that all of them will have been approved (since these are 22+ DAT people). If she's correct, that means there are 61-18 = 43 HPSP scholarships left and 14 HSCPs.
