Class of 2020 - HPSP Scholarship Applicants (Navy/Army/Air Force)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think it's a little ridiculous how many problems you can run into with completing your package.
My most recent example:

I received my acceptance phone call from UoP as well as an email. I haven't received my physical acceptance letter in the mail, so I sent my acceptance email to my recuiter. Unfortunately, I was told only an official copy of the physical letter counts. So basically my package is being sent off to the January board without any acceptances. They said this will hurt my chances a little bit, even though I have been accepted.

congratz on UOP.

can the school send you the official letter b4 dec 31st? or everybody there is on break now?

you mean as long as you send them the scanned version of your official letter correct? what you mean the official copy of the physical letter?

If you have a strong package and make the January board you'll have a very good chance. I was told from a board member that he does not know exactly what goes on in between the recruiter and them receiving the kits, but believes that if we have it up by January 8th then we will be on the January 12th board. My recruiter already gave my kit for the quality checks because the lady is going on leave on Tuesday, so I'm pretty sure I'll be in the January board.

If my whole application is complete as well as MEPS clearance today, it is reasonable to think I can get just the interviews and the quality check done by the 8th for Jan boards?

to my knowledge, it does not work that way. For january board (like Jan 26th for army, it has a deadline usually 3 weeks in advance, which is Dec 31st). so idk how your recruiter will work that out.

He mentioned that Jan 8th was the last day to get in packets for Navy Jan 12th boards, is this not the case?

I personally would say it is not reasonable, but that is just based off my experience (excluding the BS that has happened to me today). A lot of people are going on leave for the holidays, even the quality check personnel. I did my interviews last week and my recruiter is still scrambling to get the evaluations back to him. One of the interviewers went on leave so he is trying his best to get in contact.

Like I said, this is just my experience. I hope everything goes smoothly for you. We still are hoping for me to board in January as well.

They said they sent me one in the mail a few days ago, so I'm at the mercy of USPS.

Yes, I have to send the recruiter a scanned copy of the physical letter. An acceptance email doesn't count...And considering my package is in QC, I'm not sure if I can add my acceptance before it gets to the board.

Congrats!! Didn't know you were doing HPSP. Did you board early with the 22+ DAT?
Thank you!!
Yeah I spent some time thinking about it before I applied, so I only just got started on my kit at the end of October and turned in everything by November 25th for the December boards! Yes I did!

Congrats! 🙂

Now if only our recruiters were as fast as yours...I started my application in early September.

That awkward moment when your recruiter told you there was no December board for Navy... Lol but congrats to everyone that go the scholarship!!

Yep, apparently the army threw away someone's whole packet after they heard he was going to apply to Navy as well. My recruiter is going to try to get the paper they are withholding tomorrow but told me to plan for MEPS next week.

who told you about the army recruiter throwing an applicant's package? that is such BS................

wow.................unbelievable

The navy recruiter. The applicant was also a dental student so I'm sure we'll be talking a lot at MEPS next week....

MEPS couldn't clear me for tomorrow so now I'm on for all the way on January 4th... This is ridiculous. Looks like I'm on for February boards... I don't even think I'm going to get it

I'm sorry to hear that. This delay is completely unnecessary. I wouldn't give up hope yet though, you still have a good chance. I would be more worried if you boarded beyond February. Keep us posted with how your process goes.

Well I didn't wanna keep giving the play by play because there was way too much back and forth, so the end result was that my Navy recruiter finally obtained my paperwork from the army. He says I shouldn't worry any longer, but if something goes wrong he has me scheduled for MEPS on Tuesday. He believes it should all work and I'll board for January.

So what is your army recruiter doing about all this?

So what is your army recruiter doing about all this?

Considering they have not kept me up to date on anything and said I'd board in October when there is only a January board this year , I couldn't tell you. My Navy recruiter sends a text for every single update of my app and he has many more applicants as well. The only reason they called me recently was because MEPS (who is ran by the army) gave them the heads up that my Navy recruiter wanted my files.

Hey people! I am applying for the Army HPSP and have everything in and my recruiter said the boards meet Jan. 12th-15th but I shouldn't expect to hear anything for a couple weeks after because it's kinda slow to hear back. I've been looking at old threads but can't really find anything... Can anyone tell me what the average stats are for those that got awarded the scholarship? My GPA is 3.49 and 20AA. My recruiter says I've got a good shot but I wanted to get your thoughts.

Thanks ladies and gentleman!

I think you're good!

Army doesn't require the LoA, correct? It would make your app more competitive though.

Good luck!

that is correct. No LOA is required for application submission but it makes one wonder if this is true at all behind the intention of pushing back the board date well into january (just in time for the first round of acceptance to be sent out)

You sound quite competitive.

I have a 3.2 overall GPA, 3.8 science GPA, 21 AA and my recruiter feels that I'm competitive. I have a variety of other factors that strengthen my application, but from a purely academic standpoint, he still feels that I'm competitive, so my guess is you are as well.

Thanks for your thoughts. I suppose we'll find out in a month or so.

Don't want to dash anyone's hopes. Just being real here.
Recruiters almost always tell applicants what they want to hear. I know few people who were told "oh you have a very good chance" that ultimately didn't get the scholarship.
You're all competitive in the same way that a 3.5 and 20 is competitive for dental school; but you wouldn't want to apply to just one (or even three) dental school would you?

thats really true. so do you have any other inputs on the competitive stats for Army HPSP? since there are only 3 branches, some can't just apply to 2 branches (recruiters wont allow).

Can recruiters know a person has applied to multiple branches without the applicant disclosing?

You can apply to as many branches as you want, and if any recruiter tells you otherwise, they're unethical and you should find a different recruiter. I told both the Army and the Navy that I was applying to both branches and both recruiters have been, while I wouldn't call it cheerful, at least accepting of the fact that I was considering the other branch. I think it really depends on how you approach it with them. If they can't wrap their head around the fact that you want to dramatically increase your odds of being selected for HPSP by applying to multiple branches, then they are not worth your time and dedication to the process. I would have also applied to the Air Force if their standards weren't so insanely high.

Also, the fact of the matter is that no matter how hard you try to hide it, recruiters will almost certainly find out you've applied to the other branch (if you've done so). It would be a complete waste of time and effort for you to do MEPS for each individual branch (plus, is that even allowed?), and there are also other points along the way where there is crossover that could be uncovered (like the DoD background check stuff). My advice: be honest, and only work with a recruiter who is an adult about it.

I was getting anxious because my recruiter said he'd call today and I hadn't heard back for a while. I ended up calling the woman who did my quality check and she informed me my recruiter went on leave 🙄 She said she had all my paperwork and it was sent up to the boards though!! If there is anything sent back then I'll be informed but otherwise it appears I'm waiting until the end of the month :nailbiting:

for navy correct? why you have to wait until the end of the month? i thought the jan board is jan 12 and you can find out as soon as late next week.

What's the word - did you guys (who applied to the Army) have to send an official DAT score report or just the unofficial copy you received at the Prometric center?

I just sent my unofficial for the Navy but I'm now being told that the Army is holding my packet until they get my official score report. How do you even request that if so? When I go to score report request, it looks like only schools are listed as options.

hey stappess,

before I back out of navy, i still have to send in official DAT score report, for army, yes you have to send in official score report. when you go to score report request, there is an option to send to others (other organizations) the cost is 35$.

I was just going off of previous posts. My recruiter did say it was shortly after the board meets that we get the news. He mentioned earlier that I should be able to swear in by the end of January if everything goes smoothly.

As far as the DAT scores go @staapes57, I never sent the official scores to the Army and they said I have been done since October...

What is the whole process of we do get the scholarship. What do we do after we get the news to when school would start?

officer training process aka bootcamp but that also changes this year.

I tried to submit my unofficial one and my recruiter told me my application would be on hold until my official DAT came in the mail. Not sure if this is right, but this is what he's making me do.

I also had to send in an official DAT score.
