Since we're staying on topic.... only 25 more posts until I get to 1,000!

Now only 24!!

do you feel any conflict in how medical schools espouse altruism in their applicants, whereas ayn rand preaches just the opposite - that selfishness is a virtue?

Ayn Rand doesn't espouse that selfishness is a virtue, just self-interest. She says because everyone acts in their own self-interest regardless.

come on now, Mrs. Rand didn't raise no dummies

Haha he's just a silly little troll...

don't call me a troll i've been a member much longer than you

i'm obviously going to respond when people become rude via internet forum. yeah, my post wasn't funny, i get it, i know that lol but its not polite to try and talk "smack" online. anyone can be a tough guy behind a computer. none of my posts were meant to be malicious.

You know, I wrote a secondary essay defining altruism, with this as a key concept. Looking back, maybe it wasn't the best choice

The problem lies in a misunderstanding of altruism on the part of the medical schools. I don't think they would want an entirely altruistic doctor under the philosophical definition of altruism. Also, I don't really feel any conflict, because I'm not a "randroid," I'm just find many of her ideas appealing.

You beat me to it 👍

To be fair, you haven't exactly been posting up a storm since your initial q about non credit math.

yeah i'm not trying to bait you or anything, just wondering what your thoughts were on that particular issue.

It seems to me that altruism always has a catch.

In animals, there is a physical benefit to the group, family, etc, which has statistically shown to improve the genetic survivability.

In humans, it seems to be that altruism is either via the good feeling you get or because of habit.

Good feelings let us do a lot more altruistic behavior than animals can, because they work in realms where there is a physical benefit. Humans can do it where no physical benefit occurs, because it makes us feel good and makes other people feel good.

I mentioned habit, because sometime certain cultural and social behaviors are so engrained, that we do them without even thinking about it. Pushing the door as far open as you can when you walk through to allow the next person to walk through for example.

It's all good 😀. I probably should have thought about this more, but it seems to me like the altruism that medical schools champion has more to do with PR and less to do with creating a comprehensive philosophy that is contrary to Rand's. Are you familiar with Rand or have any thoughts on this?

i've read fountainhead, atlas shrugged, we the living in their entirety as well as bits and pieces from some of her other works. i was a big fan for a while but slowly started becoming distant from her philosophy. as far as my thoughts on this, well i honestly haven't thought too much about it yet, but i do agree with you in that the true definition of 'altruism' probably isn't what med schools are looking for, even though they might state so.

reason i asked you in particular was because i noticed the peikoff link in your sig.

haha know what sounds worse than a cat dying? a cat having sex...it's the most disturbing vocalization possible...:scared:

I'm kind of upset my thread got moved in with this one........technically my thread IS the class of 2013, it just has a different title.

I could have lived my whole life without thinking about that... thank you chemeng

Yeah. 🙁

We were only like 3 weeks earlier than the co 2013 thread last year.

yea i thought that was kinda weird too......guess youll have to wait a few more weeks. Honestly, i think if 5 other people hadnt made threads with Class of 20XX, your thread would have stayed.

when does 2014 get its own thread?

That's what I say. This thread is completely ridiculous and off topic. Everybody who's not applying this cycle- get off!!!! I don't like the new name of this thread either. I want it to say Class of 2014!

It's off topic because they combined 5 threads together and made it into a jumbled mess of conversations...

ryserr i didn't know you were joking 🙁 i'm dumb yeah all these threads are cuhrazy. cmon people don't you have anything else to do. this process is stressful enough, don't need to start it so early! it's so loong, you'll want it to be over as soon as you start it.

oh man if you want to go to pittmed, i'd say get that secondary and interview EARLY, you should check out the thread for this year. i've been waiting 9 weeks since my interview and still no word!

I've been keeping an eye on the Pitt thread so I have noticed that. That is rough. Pitt is my first choice school.

I'm guessing I will apply to 6-7 other schools. I don't want to go crazy or spend a ton of money or be overwhelmed with secondaries. We'll see how it goes...
