I've read ofc that its a bad idea to try and clep prereq's but my school requires college algebra to even take chem 1. I took calculus in HS but that was 22 years ago so they won't accept it. I don't need the GPA padding from an easy math class and from the practice CLEP test I took today I only missed a couple of questions with minimal review (I'm a software engineer, among other things in my day job so this stuff is all pretty routine to me). So, will taking a CLEP for college algebra be frowned upon in any way by med schools?

I really don't think so, particularly since algebra isn't a prereq for med school specifically, and you'll be using algebra in chemistry, physics, and calculus a lot, so if you do well in those classes, there should be no problem.

When people say "don't take CLEP or AP credit for prereqs" they mean med school prereqs. You still need to take a semester or year or math (Calc and/or Stats usually) but using CLEP to get into Chem 1 should be fine.
