MD co ‘20 Residency Panic Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Normally when someone asks for free art I just direct them to my commissions pricing page but they slipped it right at the end of the interview as we were getting ready to leave and I think I was more shocked at the fact that they said WHEN you send us a thank you card, implying that it was something expected that I should do??? I'm hoping they were saying it just as a lighthearted comment without actually meaning it--it was a faculty member and not the PD or APD so I think I should be fine???

They'll probably forget they even said it, to be honest. Your choices basically are either contacting every program, or not. Also, regardless of how tight Med-Peds is, I doubt they sit around talking about who sent what thank you card, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I heard that there's a candidate on the MP interview trail who's only planning to rank 2 programs so they can try to SOAP into one of the top tier programs since in the past MP has always had unfilled seats (including big name programs whose ranked candidates all matched into other big name programs)..

That is an awfully risky game to play.

If someone interviewing you says “you’ll get in somewhere”, is that their way of saying they’re impressed, or like “we won’t take you, but someone will”?

They think you're competitive enough to match somewhere, which is probably why they interviewed you in the first place. Don't read much more into it than that.

So I failed CS the first time in Oct and retook it (ended up passing). Programs don't have my fail on file since I didn't update the USMLE transcript, and only one has asked for the scores before Feb 1. Should I update all schools through ERAS? and if i do should I email programs and tell them what happened/how i improved?

Depends on the field, but I would only email the passing score transcript to the program(s) that requires it. Even with a passing score, a failed CS looks really really bad, and is likely to hurt you far more than just never sending a score.

Edit: Step 1 / CK already sent in. Applying for anesthesia

Depends. Some programs will not rank you at all without a passing CS. They assume everyone has taken it by February and the only reason you haven’t sent it in is because you failed. I would say failing CS is probably the “best” test to have to retake because it won’t hurt you AS MUCH as failing the others would. If your top 5 don’t require it don’t send it. If they do then just send it. You can’t cherry pick the programs unfortunately, since they’ll wonder why you emailed them the passing score instead of just sending it through ERAS.

My last interview before 2020:
Other interviewee: blah blah blah and yeah 22 interviews.
Me: . . .

Way to make me feel inadequate brah
Was it a different specialty? If they were a prelim interviewee then I could totally see having 22 (12 for advanced and 10 for prelim), but if they are categorical that is just ridiculous.

Not to hurt anyone's feeling on this thread but I am not the smartest or brightest but there is quite a lot of people that love to brag on the number of interviews they have on the interview trail, come on guys we do not need to brag or rub it in. We are mature and going to be leaders within our respective communities. Can we just not play along like kids on Sesame Street...

No, not a different speciality. Straight up same categorical as me. Also mentioned that.

There was an Caribbean UsIMG I met on the trail who is going on 35ish interviews (they applied to every single program in the country and were offered 45ish interviews). They were like “I’m an IMG I have no choice” but was obviously burnt to a crisp, cynical, and unenthusiastic. Missing all the dinners because they had 5 interviews a week. Rushing to the airport right after to catch a flight across the country for their interview that was the next day.

I get why they’re going on them, but if you’re showing up on interview day looking haggard, tired, giving bad answers, and not going to the dinners so residents can advocate for you is poor form. Sure they’re attending those interviews, but what’s the point if you torpedo your chances at those places because you’re too burned out?

I got a rejection on Christmas Eve and just caught it because I wasn’t paying attention to my email cause it’s Christmas. Lmaoooooooo.

On another note 2 more interviews to go in January and then I am DONE
Just to update y’all my petty ass sent them a thanks for the update and happy holidays response

Congrats. I'm sitting on 5 interviews. I hope the trickle continues.

As they should. One program that invited me recently I couldn’t go to (too short a turnaround for the tickets and it’s not a place I REALLY wanted to go to) that someone is going to be estatic to get.

Ive also had this happen!

So do you guys have a basic rank list made up?

Yep, pretty much. I have one clubhouse leader that barring a horrendous interview day is going to be getting a LOI from me in a few weeks. I would say #2 through #5 I need to shake out a little but I have a general idea of how I'm going to rank.

So you will be sending a LOI? Im on the fence about this

I’m having a hard time deciding between 2 places for my #1 and #2. One is easier for my SO, absolutely terrible EMR, difficult hours but overall good training.
the other is great hours, great people, and a PD who I adore, but it’s heavy VA. My SO couldn’t keep his job but might be able to get involved with another place.
Blahhh

Oh that’s rough! Im sure you’re leaning #2

What EMR is the terrible EMR? Humor me lol

My first, second, and last ranks are set in stone. My middle portion changes daily.
I feel like I know the bottom few on my list. But the top part is still a mystery to me. I kinda need to sit down and really think it out. It’s tough!

Cerner Soarian? Or whatever?
I hate Cerner lol
I don’t know that type of Cerner, I just know it was blocky and old. Soooo old.
The other place is Meditech, and a lot of people crap on it but it’s my home hospital’s EMR so I’m extremely comfortable with it.

WHAT?!?! Cerner is 100000000 times better than Meditech. Are you sure it was Cerner?
