MD co ‘20 Residency Panic Thread

What did I want today? The flood of post-October 1 interviews everyone keeps talking about. What did I get today? A split nail from all the scrubbing I've been doing, a previously stable patient nosediving, a very sad ICU case, and to top it all off - car trouble!
Sounds like someone is getting a MGH interview on friday

Just sent out a letter of interest to a program and got an interview 2 hours later. Either they would have given me one anyway or they just saw it. I honestly feel like most programs don’t actually read/review all the applications before hitting the invite button.

How long was your letter of interest? Im thinking of sending some also!

Was honestly just generic and stating why even though I’m not located in that region why I want to go there. Others were for prelim spots at places I got advanced interviews for. I feel like flooding a bunch of places is low yield, but if you pick 4 or 5 programs you really like and want them to actually read your app, go for it. Worst they’ll say is no, but I’d rather get rejected than ghosted.

I’ll say this though, the biggest factor for getting an interview is who you know. I know that there are several current residents at “top tier” IM programs that have board failures or did marginal on Steps (not SDN bad, like <210 bad) but since they had someone important to vouch for them, they got interviewed and matched there. I feel like a phone call will help 100x more than a letter of interest would.

I have not seen an increased in interview invites since MSPE was released on Tuesday. Do you guys have better luck? How many interview invites have you guys received so far?

For IM: I had 3 pre-MSPE, 3 since. Absolute crickets today. All Midwest/south invites. Zero East Coast. I applied to 40+ academic programs and feel like I somehow may have under applied. Which seems absolutely insane.

Nothing since MSPE...mildly panicking...meanwhile friend has had 16 invites this week alone ._.

I lost count of how many my friend has had (last I knew it was 20) but they already cancelled 8 interviews. They are applying Peds.

My pace has greatly slowed down, as i was getting quite a few pre-MSPE.

I wont say how many, but im applying FM so the competition isnt really there.

We know it’s a lot. 😛
I was at 4 pre MSPE and drumroll please..... im still at 4

any invites this week? Internal medicine. :grumpy:

Based on the reddit spreadsheet, looks like 40-45% of programs have yet to give out interviews and many programs seem to have just given out their first wave or so. Looks like the next week should have a lot of movement.

Thank you. This gives me some hope

Applying psych and got 8 programs so far. Hoping to get 12, and will start refusing at 15. Currently at an away rotation and feeling lukewarm about it now. Not sure how I will feel at the end of this experience, but considering not ranking it if I get 12 other solid programs depending on how things go.

@ 8, plan to cancel a couple, hopefully get 4-6 more. Don't see myself going to more than 12. Also dying from anxiety over level 2 PE, it would throw the biggest wrench into all of this. If there is a god out there...

Me too. I should know how i did in the next few weeks... still scared

How many programs send out formal rejections? Not sure if me not getting an IV means im out of the running completely..

Yeah im neurotic. Just don’t have enough IV’s in my desired location to be comfortable quite yet.

1 Rejection and no interview as of yet. Submitted application late (23 Sep). Best of luck to everyone!

None ever since MSPE uploaded. It really worries me that ~1200 IIs have already been sent out this week per the spreadsheet. I'm fourth quartile so the MSPE just makes my app look bad.
Can you please tell me where is this spreadsheet how to read it etc

Didn't send out my USMLE transcripts until today. Thought they went out automatically after applying... Am I screwed? Should I send an e-mail to the programs letting them know that it's in now?

When did you submit your application? Programs will notice that your application is complete and ready to review..so an email isn't needed.

You guys I feel like the programs that actually wait for the mspe will be sending interviews in the last 2 weeks of October. Some have sent out emails saying expect to be contacted oct 15-30.
I’ve gotten a decent amount before the release and 0 since. The programs that I’m waiting on are higher up on the list and I think they’ll be more selective with their invites and are actually taking the time to review stuff.

Anyways good luck to everyone the next few weeks. Stay strong lol. Keep the stress eating to a minimum .. we need to look good in them suits y’all.
