Just sent my LOI.
![]()
Sent my LOI a few hours ago with no response since... I know I shouldn't freak out about that but I don't care. 4th year has been the most stressful year by far.
I got a response to mine a day later if that helps. Even then, I’ve re-read the message and while very positive it doesn’t exactly help me decipher anything. I will say that after sent an LOI I just felt relieved to get that off my shoulder, or my to-do-list.Sent my LOI a few hours ago with no response since... Yeah I sent mine Monday afternoon and still no acknowledgment. Feels bad man. I feel like I sent a risky text and got left on read.Sent my LOI a few hours ago with no response since... I know I shouldn't freak out about that but I don't care. 4th year has been the most stressful year by far.
I'm not sending any LOI's. 3 out of 5 of my top choices said to not contact them after the interview. I'm calling it quits and trusting the algorithm.

Mine is a community program that doesn’t get talked about enough on the spreadsheets to know 🙁 I do have friends on the alert to tell me if they hear from them or hear of people hearing from them.i looked at old spreadsheets and apparently my number 1 never responds llol. made me feel better

Same. I got a response this morning. It was really nice, but non-committal. It still feels great to have that step checked off.
Now I get to keep reordering the middle of my list every day for a month!
My #1 is pretty open and loves communication, so I sent a LOI without expecting anything in return. They responded within a few hours with a very nice response. Trying not to read too much into things, but I am glad I sent the LOI. I did everything I could, the rest comes in March. Time to relax. 😴
I can’t seem to order my list from 2-7 so I’m wondering given that some of you are rank list gurus— is there any optimal way of going about ranking if I’m truly indecisive for the first quarter or so my list ?
I’ve heard that some people cut the list in half and rank the bottom half first to help make a rank list— is that better?

I used this site a few days after I had already made my list based on a long weighing of pros and cons. The elo ranker basically makes you go on gut feeling and my two lists ended up aligning pretty well.
I’ve definitely made blocks and tried to reorder within them. Basically used gut feelings to look at 3-6, 7-10 and then looked within those to see how programs A, B, and C compared. As things became more concrete, I’ve moved down (so now it’s programs 5-9 that are up in the air, and the top and bottom are relatively set). Slow and very gestalty, but it is what it is!I can’t seem to order my list from 2-7 so I’m wondering given that some of you are rank list gurus— is there any optimal way of going about ranking if I’m truly indecisive for the first quarter or so my list ?

Wish there was a way to see on March 3rd how many places you ranked that ranked you back. Not who did, just how many. For applicants with 1-2 interviews, this may give them some more time to prepare.

I'm all for getting a list in, but if you're in a coma and can't enter a list, it's unlikely you'd actually be healthy enough to start a residency in July.an R3 I rotated with on a cardio elective/audition and she was also applying cardio, said she entered and certified a list day 1 because she was worried about if she was in a coma or something that she would be excluded. She continued thinking and entered other lists. May be paranoid but The Match waits for no one.
Already answered but I already quoted it. Yes, and we can't tell if you're verified or not. And it doesn't matter for ranking -- if not verified, then you'll just be pulled off the list by the NRMP (so doesn't matter to me, totally matters to you!)Thanks! Can you confirm that programs can view/rank us if we're not verified? As crazy as it seems, some rank lists are already being finalized which is why I was nervous.
I sent an LOI to my #1 and never heard anything back. I matched there on Monday...if you get a response, that’s cool, but don’t freak out if you don’t hear anything.

I figured this may help calm some nerves based on some recent posts lol. House hunting has already begun (family of 4 😱)Honestly needed to hear this haha congrats!! A little jelly of the extra month plus you have to start planning your move/life!
I had a realtor in my #1 city already but super stressful to think that it may not happen like I want it to. Luckily most of my cities are smaller so more affordable for housing for my family. It just needs to be match day alreadyI figured this may help calm some nerves based on some recent posts lol. House hunting has already begun (family of 4 😱)
How did my fellow DO homies fair in the ophtho/uro match this year??
We had 4 that I know of think it was Umich & Ascension Macomb/Oakland for Uro and UT San Antonio & Ascension Macomb/Oakland for OpthoHow did my fellow DO homies fair in the ophtho/uro match this year??
2 uro (both former AOA) and 1 ophtho at SLU from KCU. Since I’ve been there we’ve had 2-4 combine uro/ophtho matches each year. Saw a few DOs on twitter go unmatched in Uro tho.How did my fellow DO homies fair in the ophtho/uro match this year??

Check out dr glaucomflecken, he certainly makes it seem dopeI can't for the life of me figure out why someone would want to go into ophtho. I can't fathom it. Eyeballs. Really?
cushest surg specialty forsure
Dope field. One of the few fields truly combining medicine and surgery. Technology, great research advancements. Patients that are kiss your feet thankful to you for helping keep the most valued sense at its best. HUGE money making/business opportunities. Sit down a lot so can practice until old as hell. Great neuro and immuno tie-ins.I can't for the life of me figure out why someone would want to go into ophtho. I can't fathom it. Eyeballs. Really?

Average work week is 35 hours with really good compensation. Procedures are quick. Super consultant, but still long term patient care. Lots of tech.

I know I know. Glaucomflecken is my favorite on twitter lol.Average work week is 35 hours with really good compensation. Procedures are quick. Super consultant, but still long term patient care. Lots of tech.
I totally get the cush part of it. I'm mostly playing with my comment lol it's more so that I find being an eyeball specialist boring though I haven't rotated through optho so that's quite ignorant on my part. The money and lifestyle is obviously the biggest two things that jump out. The tech I'm not too familiar about it but that makes sense along with the practice till you're old thing.
And yet i feel the same way about surgery and peds... we like what we like.I can't for the life of me figure out why someone would want to go into ophtho. I can't fathom it. Eyeballs. Really?
You have to remember a lot of us got into medicine to learn science, do cool ****, and help/fix people but not talk to patients a lot or have some drawn out relationship with them. As a people person going into a non-patient facing specialty, I can say that a big part of the appeal of ophtho, uro, and ent is that you legit get it all. These fields give you people but not too much. It has just enough "feel like a traditional doctor" to satisfy that worry even though a lot of the people applying have motivations like me.I know I know. Glaucomflecken is my favorite on twitter lol.

Idk your IM career plans but you should do a rotation for sure.
Ophtho is it's own little world, I cant even make sense of half their notes. Dexter/sinister, really?
Then again it's still better than the ortho notes written fully in abbreviations. I wish they'd just start using pictographs

On ophtho now, and I can legit say that even as a semi-checked out 4th year I am enjoying it. Eye surgery doesn't gross me out nearly as much as I worried it might, and I echo the above about the cool science/tech. Also, I feel like it's a whole new world of pharmacology. I was choosing between an optho and an ENT elective, and realized of ENT I'm only really interested in the E. Especially during COVID before I'm fully vaccinated I feel like I made the right call.

Talking to patients is my #1 most important reason for medical school, and then IM. also I just cannot with the eye.
but I agree that ophtho, Uro (which my phone corrected to “uti” lol), and ENT are great for being able to have a mix of things. I also thought that about ObGyn too though.
Thankfully the world, and medicine, takes all kinds to run. I'm super thankful most people want to do IM, FM etc. It means I don't have to and patients can get the care they deserve from someone who isn't irritated or burnt out by it! Rock on!Talking to patients is my #1 most important reason for medical school, and then IM. (Psych was my #2).

I was hardcore IM before 3rd year of medical school. Ran as far away as possible (into the dark room lol) after IM clerkship. No arguments from those of us going into ophtho. I'll take the eyes and leave the SW trainwreck dispos to you on the floors.
I'm going into surg but I really like IM. But then I still remember that attending that did rounds from 8-12 every single day regardless how many patients there were. It was 90% just standing outside the room and talking about which antibiotics to use for this and that. Just a 4 hour long Bruh Moment for me that made me realize: I gotta do something procedural haha.
Either way I still really enjoyed the patient interactions in primary care type rotations too.

ROL certified 🥴 now I really have nothing to do for the next 5 weeks lol
My favorite part about surgery was reassuring the patients pre-op and talking to them in the PACU. Did not enjoy anything in between. My favorite part about surgery was when that rotation ended and I knew I never had to go near an OR again for the rest of my career. My favorite part about surgery was reassuring the patients pre-op and talking to them in the PACU. We had a bunch of auditioners on my surgery rotation, and the attendings didn't give a crap about the third years, so I snuck away from the standard colorectal service and only went with the trauma team a week in. To no one's surprise I'm applying EM.My favorite part about surgery was when that rotation ended and I knew I never had to go near an OR again for the rest of my career.
Just certified my rank list! Now all that's left is to kick back, relax, and try to stave off nauseating feelings of imposter syndrome
