My school has a policy for reasonable accommodation for those with disabilities. If the doctor cited the reason for not writing the letter because the student couldn't lift a patient, there would definitely be an issue there.

Again what I mean to say is, we don't know the details here.

hahaha. I was at an interview where one of the interviewers said no one ever got poor by underestimating the stupidity of the American people. Just about died laughing esp cause the guy was so old and so livid and actually picked his cane up to make a point.
 
Hey I know this is kind of sappy y'all,

But over the last year I've really gotten to appreciate the friends I feel like I've made on here and all the familiar faces. I know it was a really important source of stress relief/enjoyment for me in this crazy journey to interact with y'all and I hope some of you feel the same!

More than a lil tipsy right now at 12:12 and going to bed imminently (new parent problems). Either way though, next summer we're on to the next adventure together.

***By the way, this is just a preview of the sappy post we're getting if I get drunk after match day***

Happy New Year’s Day everybody!!!!

Ahhh, new year, new outlook. Some nasty comments in this thread, some by newcomers, some by folks who have been skirting the line for a long time (don't assume that because 7 people like your comments that they are appropriate. It might just mean all seven need an attitude adjustment). Here's my new year's resolution. The Med student forums have been atrocious for a while and I'm quite confident that getting rid of a few bad eggs will fix that. I've gotten the green light above to remedy this problem, so look for a friendlier, more professional medical student subforum in 2021. Respectful debates and disagreements are welcome, as is professional criticism and genuinely helpful advice. ****posting with smart remarks that contribute nothing will be considered offtopic and infractions issued accordingly. There are lots of other places to troll on SDN, the med student forums are no longer one of them.

Respectful debate and disagreement: This might be the most negative post in this thread though, and feels pretty hostile given our New Years love bonding.

Well, you're free to interpret however you like, however, it was meant as a clear statement of purpose given the numerous reports we've had on the backside concerning this thread.

This is never going to happen. People were willing to get the smallpox vaccine - that’s the difference. I even know physicians, nurses, RTs, fellow med students, etc. that are completely unwilling to take the COVID vaccine. I got my first dose of the Moderna vax on 12/30, so at least those people won’t get me sick. But still - if we can’t even get healthcare providers to voluntarily take the vaccine, do we really think there’s a snowball’s chance in hell of vaccinating the general public at levels to develop herd immunity?

I wish I could be optimistic about it, but I just can’t.

I’m hoping for a virtual graduation/match ceremony myself - it’s a while off, but if my school isn’t paying for my plane ticket, I see no reason to travel 1,000 miles back to my school for one day each for just some ceremonial BS when I’m going to have to fly right back immediately to get back to rotations. I’m not coming if it’s not virtual. This is more of a DO problem than an MD one - but I have strongly appreciated COVID-related cancellations of far away mandatory events. Ridiculous in the first place to send someone literally 1,000+ miles away from the university and expect them to have to come back for single-day events multiple times per year. It’s not like they reimburse us for all of the mandatory travel.

Finally starting my 4th year EM rotation. Haven't taken a shelf in like 4 months or looked at a question since august.

I have 9 more weeks of rotations to complete my requirements. I have 1 more week of my core EM rotation, then a 4 week core underserved rotation, then a little break due to timelines, then a 4 week away IM wards elective, then I’m done.

as for shelves, I had to take 1 in November and 1 in December for the specialties I didn’t complete at end of M3 when we got pulled for COVID. I also took Level 2-CE in October, take Step 2-CK in a couple days (maybe?), and have my EM shelf in a week (definitely). So overall I have still been actively doing questions and studying.

I gotta do 2 more in person rotations in Jan/Feb then I’m online or on vacation. Gonna be great to be able to move and get all situated sooner

Props to you. I was cooked after step 2. My last 2 rotations are at our spot so ill see ya in feb to March.

I was debating moving earlier to wherever i end up matching. Probably going to move in june if its outside my home state. Earlier if its closer to home.

Wtf you’re gonna be a doctor in the most privileged nation in the world. that isn’t the “scraps”. I don’t understand the argument that we aren’t free either. You get to wake up and do whatever the f*** you want every day of your life and you have access to fantastic education and resources to help you achieve your goals. You are living, walking proof of that. What a horrible outlook

Weird flex but ok. How is this threat-post relevant to the ERAS 2021 panic? Assuring us that you'll delete dissenting comments and ban those who don't "play nice"? If you don't like the healthy discussions in the med students forums then kindly skip away. Even that IMG tangent was useful in making us think about ableism and disabilities and when it really is discrimination vs making excuses. Deleting things to fuel your power rush is not only insane, it is detrimental to the point of the STUDENT-doctor network.

Sure, if your measure of freedom is selling chicken meat and collecting rainwater than we’re “not free”. But regardless you will be better off financially than 99.9% of the world population so I’m not sure what you’re so upset about. It’s all relative, and relatively speaking you’re kicking ass.

I agree taxes suck, but roads and stuff don’t maintain themselves. And really if you want patients to not go bankrupt, you’re talking about even LESS freedom with a single payer system and likely significantly higher taxes. Those things aren’t just free, you know that right?

Also if you have family in the UK and India (like myself), you know that the lockdown was more of a verbal campaign and no one actually followed the rules. People are too poor there to actually have a full (or any really) lockdown in effect without the government giving money. So sorry Lawpy, what you're saying is a little silly.

And the lockdowns in France were actually fairly effective. It was the way they did opening back up that ****ed things up.

I mean I love America, but there are several countries with better healthcare outcomes, lower gun crime, less poverty, etc.

I don't know their scores (well I do a couple cause we're friends irl and they're def smarter than me lol)
but I keep interviewing with ivy league CANDIDATES who are probably way more desirable lol

Sometimes when everyone else is from an established MD school I worry I’ll be ranked lower purely for being a DO, but I keep reminding myself I can’t worry about that and to just try and interview well and hope everything works out well in the Match.

Hence my initial point that there is no chance at all that a nationwide lockdown would be imposed in US and to blame it on the stupidity of Americans is extreme. Even getting the stimulus out is controversial.

US society is deeply dysfunctional and broken.

We closed down elementary schools and kept bars and beaches open. We had a presidential candidate say that masks were the greatest affront to liberty in American history. We have governors who still won’t mandate masks or social distancing, and other governors who say they will order the police to enforce people not singing carols above normal speaking volume.

It’s not extreme.

That's not stupidity. That's the corruption and hyperpartisan nature of US policy. What did people expect would happen since 2017? Antiscience sentiment persisted for many years, and the corruption of social media allowed bots and fake news outlets to launch a massive disinformation campaign. US public education has consistently been very bad and was deteriorating for years that got even worse now with Zoom education. Inequality continues to get worse.

It's not stupidity. It's years of neglect, terrible policies, sheer malignancy and the continued rot of US society that led to the current situation. Something like targeted lockdowns where Americans will fully and loyally obey is nothing but fantasy.

I wonder about that. I wonder if it will be possible for the best teachers to have more students via Zoom than a traditional classroom and thus increase a student's access to high-quality education?

I know, I am a hopeless optimist. Still the world is increasingly moving to online interactions and it is not clear to me that that will cause a decline in quality of education by itself. Plus if the students are on their computers they won't be on our lawns. 😉

Not from what I’ve seen with my own kids. We pulled her out and did homeschool because the teacher just couldn’t give the attention to all the kids like she could in person.

The students still need to afford computers/cameras/network gear etc and save enough for electricity bills though. This on top of laggy Zoom meetings, connection interruptions, limited personalized attention etc. In person education is necessary or switch to homeschooling.
