how are you guys dealing with passing the time? I don't like not having things to do (cue medical school) and the stress of interviews mixed with lack of seeing friends because of social distancing/time off/meaningless and sometimes virtual rotations is really starting to wear on me. i feel like I cycled through random hobbies to get into back when covid started.

Online friends via Xbox and the like. Nothing like going through old classic games with the buddies virtually

I’m still doing hospital rotations and studying. Still feel like I’m consumed by medical school and don’t have enough time.

Thank you to those who have tried to keep this topic on track. Your contributions add to the body of knowledge for those who truly are in panic for the match. The moderation team has removed a few of the rabble-rousers so hopefully, this thread can continue on course as intended.

There’s got to be a balance.

The town my third year rotation site in doesn’t have a Target, Starbucks, or Panera. I mean I don’t have to live in NYC, but goshdarnit I am dying to carry a salted caramel cold brew around while I open my mind to what Target tells me I need to buy. And Target is even better after stopping at Panera for a you pick two with a Greek salad and a modern caprese. Oh god.

The upside is probably everywhere I match for residency (unless I match here of course) is gonna look like San Francisco after this.

I’ll take my matchbox that‘s a five minute walk to everything I could possibly need over than having to make a two-hour round trip drive just to find a Target, and being limited to the same maybe 10 restaurants to eat at other than fast food places. As a person who never carries cash, I have yet to even have Chinese food here because there’s only one Chinese place, they’re cash only, and my bank doesn’t have any ATMs here LMFAO. send halp.
I’m so basic that one of the first things I did after getting invites was see if there was a Trader Joe’s nearby, so I feel you.

I look for: vegetarian restaurant options, Starbucks, movie theaters with recliners, proximity to airport, proximity to college football.

Movie theaters with recliners!!! I forgot how much I miss those. I love going to the movies. There’s a single movie theater here, but it closed down due to COVID and hasn’t reopened yet (no idea when/if it will), so I have no idea what it looks like on the inside. Hopefully one day I will have the opportunity to find out.

I live close to Philly and wouldn’t have it any other way tbh. The midwest just wasn’t for me.

Thats exactly where we were thinking but last time we’d looked a couple years back you had to book it 6+ months out. Maybe it’ll be different with COVID.
not sure exact time when you were looking. But i remember a time after the keys got hit by a bad hurricane (3 -5 yrs ago?) so it was hard to book because hardly any hotels were open haha.

Just started planning a bachelor party in march. I've had zero issues getting accommodations.

Does anyone else feel intimidated by some of the people they're interviewing with??? My measly 23x Step1 keeps giving me palpitations
I just convince myself this program will probably be #8 on their list. So i've got an even better chance of matching at said program.

Weren't we supposed to do 0 aways
Most DOs have to do aways. My core site only takes 3rd year students. So i spent most of fall moving around. Don't feel proud of it because i probably didn't help the stop the COVID spread. But I gotta graduate.

We are and it will probably be mandatory. DO schools seem to make graduation (and everything else lol) mandatory.

Edit: read this wrong... Match day I don't think so. Graduation, hell yeah they gotta feel good about themselves for giving us the privilege to get bent over by them for 4 years and then getting in the way every step of the way lol.
I'm wanna know if theres a way we can choose who gowns us. If our favorite EM doc is around i know everyone would gladly show up.

Would you go to graduation if you didn’t have to and it wasn’t a pandemic? A lot of people seem like they’d rather skip it.
If I can bring family (1-2 people). I'll probably go. Graduation is about the people who helped you get the degree.

When should I send a "my rank list is done and you're my #1" email to my top program? Obviously close to the time rank lists are due but not too close, right? I was thinking first week of Feb. What do my fellow M4's think?

I'm still interviewing into 2nd week of Feb, but that might be specialty dependent. I was gonna send it like a week out from ranklist submissions.

Fair enough. I guess part of this question is how early do programs submit their lists too, because I don't want to wait so long that it's futile. And yes I know it may be futile either way lol.

FWIW, my top program's last interview date was like mid-Jan.

Considering Columbia didn’t even certify one year, I’m guessing they go close to the buzzer too.

San Diego.
I didn’t apply anywhere in Cali

I better be invited.....

Do these actually matter/make the program rank you higher? Maybe it's specialty or situation-dependent - my #1 program is a reach (I didn't think I would get an interview from them) so I can't imagine an email like that helping me.

I know a program here in town that still took lots of rotators, and I met no less than 6 EM applicants when I was doing an EM rotation, all from different schools, and all of them had done at least 4 aways.

Right but this is an example, it isnt evidence of this being a widespread issue which is my point. I’m not saying it isnt an actual widespread problem, I just dont think it is based on what Ive seen over hundreds of apps. There may be a few programs/applicants who didnt listen, but that doesnt mean the issue is widespread enough to have any effect on the average applicant.

I dont believe it statistically effects your chances. For EM there was a study awhile back that programs said they may move someone up a spot or two, many programs said they wouldnt. People took that as this is needed bc it improves your chances. But moving up one spot on a list of 100 makes very little difference tbh in terms of statistically matching at a place.

Didn't columbia also choose to just take 0 people that year, rather than fill via SOAP? Oof, simple mistake that cost society several excellent CT surgeons.

Wait they went unfilled that year even after SOAP?

Wut.

Are schools really pulling people from rotations? Heard VCU was doing this? I have the vaccine let me in the wards ☹️

edit: I need these next 4 months to graduate since I missed 4 moths cause my school is too strict about missing rotation for interviews and my step 2 got rescheduled twice lol

I think they chose to not participate in the SOAP.
According to the article, they did participate in SOAP, but they didn't like any of the candidates so they went unfilled. It was 2 spots.

I vaguely also recall a urology match scandal when spots were filled mostly by IMGs and those with much lower step scores and many kids from T10s with outstanding CVs ended up very low on their rank lists. Turned out that some admin at AUA submitted all programs' ROLs backwards so their top candidates were at the bottom. I wish I could find the post or link describing what happened, but I can't seem to find it.

I
Anybody else have a required rotation this spring? Or is everyone else now coasting until graduation.

Finally starting my 4th year EM rotation. Haven't taken a shelf in like 4 months or looked at a question since august.
i have to complete a third year clerkship, EM, and ICU☹️ And an elective. NOT coasting. My step 2 got moved twice and I got kicked off rotation for too many interviews so lol here we are

I'd say whenever you and they are done interviewing (if you know the latter) is good. End of Jan/ beginning of Feb for most?

I don't know if we've talked about this before, but do programs not realize that we're interviewing them as well? Here are a few common things I've encountered that are HUGE turn-offs.

#1: Asking Behavioral Questions
Tell me about a time when......Programs say that these questions enable them to "objectively assess applicants". Bull****. If we have all of the unconscious biases that people say that we actually have, being objective is an impossible task. These questions are awful and make the interview feel choppy. They do, however, allow me to objectively assess if a program values standardized questioning over actual normal human interaction. In a year in which the only impression you can give of your program is a zoom call, why on earth would you choose a format that feels cold and impersonal? Applicants rank places that "feel good" the highest. The logical play here is to be warm and inviting and just talk like a human.

Error #2: The Cardinal Sin of Being Awkward
So they've asked me their standard behavioral interview questions that I hate, and then ask me if I have questions. I ask three really good ones, then thank them for their time and responses. I assure them that I've had ample opportunity to ask questions and will reach out if I have any more. A long silence ensues, where both of our minds are racing for filler, and they finally manage to ask me if I have hobbies. We talk about hobbies, but it's disjointed and super awkward. I'm trying to carry things along, but it's just not happening so I finally give up and give in to the awkward silence.

If you are the interviewer, you have to be able to carry a f****** conversation. How the hell are people so bad at it? Also, you have an entire file of fodder for us to talk about. It's called my application. It has at least 25 conversation starters. Pick one.

Error #3 Offering In-Person Visits
I don't care what your opinion is about COVID, pretty much all medical students and programs agree that in-person visits are a bad idea this year. So when you offer me an in-person visit to rotate at the hospital, you're ignoring pretty much all conventional wisdom and showing me that you're tone deaf. It's not that going to your hospital is any more dangerous for me or your patients. It's that you're choosing to ignore how things are being done this year. And I'm supposed to go out of my way to drive to a different state to visit your hospital for a day for a SURGERY PRELIM amidst a pandemic?? You're out of your damn mind. What they're doing is using it as a screening tool to see how serious (or desperate) people are. I'm sad to say that it's working.

1. 100% agree!
2. I haven't experienced this one lol. If we reach a natural conclusion 2-5 mins early I say some parting words and click exit room.
3. agreed, but none of my invites have been doing this.

You gotta come up with some more filler Q's, you madman

Not everyone is talkative and can carry out conversation but does not make them less or more of a person...and program...you are the one who ask for a job...the emphasis is more on you to carry out the conversation. Not everyone follow the rules. You can politely decline if you don’t want to...but don’t be mad if they don’t do what you do lol...it is life

Does anyone know how to check if a program has had previous ACGME sanctions?

The only thing I might not 100% agree with are the behavioral questions. There are definitely some very specific ones that can tell a lot about our thought processes and decision making, and some programs might be looking for people that answer in specific ways because it’s consistent with their mission. But asking weird ones like “what kind of animal would you be” or “tell me about a time you made a mistake and what you learned from it” are just fillers and there are much better things we can talk about.
I get that standardized questions are an attempt to make interviews more fair and less like an old boys club. If I don't have the resources to share your hobbies of polo and scuba diving in the Maldives or to be a fellow alum from XYZ elite private university, that shouldn't mean that my interviewer and I have less to talk about. However, I also agree that some of the standardized questions are pretty brutal. Seriously, try asking me "Tell me about the lowest point in your past" or "What's the worst mistake you've ever made" and you better be prepared for the answers. I usually start by explaining that there is still some emotional rawness associated with some of these episodes so that I likely will cry while responding. This usually takes them aback, but I just want them to know that if I'm being really honest these stories aren't the usual light interview fodder. Then I talk openly and honestly about some of the greatest challenges in my life and shed a few tears. That's only if I like my interviewer though, if they are someone I didn't connect with then I'll pick some more benign "challenge" or "mistake" that I can talk about without being as vulnerable. I tell myself that at least the people I've cried in front of will know 100% what they're getting into before accepting me (a touchy feely kind of person) as a resident.

Does anyone know how to check if a program has had previous ACGME sanctions?

Here you can see if they were on probation, etc.

Is it possible to get a sanction without being on probation? Does this matter when evaluating residency programs?
I don't think it matters too much. Here you can see all kinds of statuses, like "on probation" or "accredited with a warning" etc. for years going back since a program was first accredited, but when you come right down to it what you want to know is the back story behind why these things happened. Did a resident report on their program for violating duty hours? Did a bunch of faculty get recruited away simultaneously so the ratio of trainees to faculty was an issue? For those things you will have to find someone you trust to ask. But this might at least give you a sense of whether there's something in the programs past that you might want to be asking about.

the one I find hardest is "tell me something about yourself that's not on your CV"

but also yeah behavioral questions suck. I don't remember what happened a week ago. Give me a full scenario and ask me what I would do. It's just as reliable as asking it broadly such that someone could just fabricate an entire story.

I take that one as “what do you enjoy doing outside of medicine or professionally”, like cool hobbies or things you are good at and enjoy. Seems to go over well for me give it a shot!

Agreed, I answer it like this or something that is unique about me (but not on CV)

But I listed my most important hobbies/interest with fun facts on my ERAS lol. That’s how I get stuck.

do they want to hear about how I stubbed my toe in 2004? Or who I voted for president? I’m just kidding. Not trying to be obtuse. Just explaining why I find it so difficult.

Ugh, same.
I vomited my entire life onto ERAS, what more do they want? I have just been picking whichever hobby they haven't brought up yet and go with that.
