MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are they really scheduling maintenance on ERAS from Saturday AM through Monday? Seems like that could’ve been done a different time and not locking people out mid cycle haha

Everything about this is backwards bro. The fact that programs can send you "we have your app" notifications, to the fact that programs can use random third party platforms that don't show up on eras. To the email notification frenzy. What a wild set up

man just looking at the reddit spreadsheet I would trade 25 points off both step1 + 2 and AOA to have a T20 school on my diploma. def should've put more effort into med school applications lmao.

Is there a reason why some of us are still at 0?? I am now a bit worried.

My theory is that programs started with home students and sub-Is last week, and are now starting to open their filter up to a slightly larger radius day-by-day. then once they’re done with regional invites they’ll fill out the rest of the interview spots with regular applicants.

That's what I thought but I know multiple IMGs who have gotten more invites that I at primary care programs. I am now wondering if it is LOR thing, etc.

Everyday without II. I wonder if PDs think i am dousing myself with this stuff.

maybe their hometowns are within geographic filters for those programs. If programs are doing regional filters I’d bet that they weigh hometown more than med school since 75% of us didn’t get to pick from multiple acceptances.

N=1 my only invites have been from med school zipcode programs. Home state programs have not shown any inkling of interest.

Is the spreadsheet verified to be accurate? Or can anyone just lie and fake school name/stats?

No. You're fine. We aren't even a week into the season, you will get your interviews.
ENOUGH DUDE. Next week you'll say "we aren't even 2 weeks in, chill out" and in January you'll say "rank lists aren't due for another 6 weeks, programs need time" like let some people be neurotic without false hope JFC

I'm a T15 applicant sitting at zero II for both advanced and pre-lim, average stats for specialty.

Getting worried...

lol man it’s not false hope at this point. It’s been less than a week. Assuming the spreadsheets are close to accurate, going off EM less than half of programs have even sent out invites, ~750 invites total. Assuming 1 invite per person, ~50% of applicants would be expected to have an invite right now, but we know that’s not the case so it’s probably closer to 25-30%. AKA it’s more normal to not have invites right now than it is to have one. Barring glaring red flags That people knew about going in, it’s more likely than not that a lack of interviews is because of a lack of connection to the area.

Apologies if my message came off as too neurotic. Was just trying to assuage my own fears I guess 😕
No, no, i am not trying to be condescending. Everyone has the right to be freaked out, its a difficult process. I was just trying to inject some humor in the situation since memes is the way i deal with this uncertainty and stres.

what open house was this ?

A southeast program, EM. I was paraphrasing but it’s essentially what they said after someone asked about showing interest but not necessarily having geographic ties.

they also openly said they keep track of which students have attended.

just got off an open house right now that said the fact we're on the open house is equivalent to showing interest to the area. so yeah they help. they recognize the names

I attended an open house that said verbatim “these open houses have absolutely no impact on our decision to interview you and are purely informational” from a top 15 DR program.

Must be program dependent.

"Several members have left the meeting."

I have had 3 random invites from places with no connection. My home state programs also have shown no interest....

This sounds a little crazy

This sounds a little crazy

I don't think it's crazy. All in all, I've probably attended 20+ open houses this summer/fall. Some had 4 student attendees, others had 100+. Some had break-out rooms, others did not. Some were discussion-based and conversational, others were formal presentations. Can I say for sure which programs kept attendance and which programs didn't? Absolutely not. But what I can say is that there were definitely times when I vibed with a program, and when my presence was probably being accounted for (whether through formal attendance or just informal name recognition). Then there were also times when I knew it just didn't matter whether I was there or not. Those tended to be the 100+ large group presentation open houses. So was attending the open houses a waste? TBD.

I had a typo in my email on ERAS. I missed out on 2 interview invites that I know of (home program, because they told us ahead of time that we'd all be interviewed, and nearby program that send a message through ERAS portal to expect an email that never arrived for me). How much should I be panicking right now? I have now put in the correct email that I have access to, and hopefully most programs would not have yet sent out interview invites yet?

Plan B: write to every residency program I applied to and basically admit to being an idiot who did not double check the email address listed on my application.

Just checked the spreadsheet. Biggest day for IM yet. And still nothing. Zero invites. My heart sunk every time I read a program I applied to. Sucked equally whether it was in my top 10 or bottom 10. :barf::barf::barf:

Man this is awful, but if it makes you feel better it is always the super competitive applicants who post on these spreadsheets anyway. Times like these I wish more specialties would have one day where they send out all the invites. The ortho bros in my class are straight chilling

I’m saying it sounds crazy that applicants would be at a disadvantage for not attending an open house that they 1) may not have been able to attend or 2) didn’t even know about in the first place

I have no doubt in my mind it’s helpful for the applicant to learn more about the program

This is the stuff nightmares are made of . If you are going to update them, say something like " I have updated my contact information and email address.
