MD & DO co'21 Residency Panic thread

Got an interview while scrubbed in, went to schedule less than an hour later and not only were there no more interview spots, but every single waitlist spot was gone...wtf. Why are places over inviting? Especially with people hoarding interviews this year there’s no reason to over invite

This sucks. Trying to think of it form their perspective, I feel like if these programs are getting a ton of more applications, they are probably not increasing interview slots by the same factor. So they're extra desperate this year to have us screw up and give them a reason not to rank us. The first step of that would be to f us on the interview invites. idk though

Un F ing believable. I'm sorry my man.

How do these situations usually play out? Would applicants get spots later on? Or can I not even take a **** in peace anymore.

At least for rads there are not really more people applying apparently.

I trained my SO on how to schedule for me and my email goes to her phone as well. Rule is she texts me if an invite comes and if I don't respond to her in 30 seconds she just jumps in and schedules me. I already got yelled at a bit today on my rotation for pulling out my phone in a patient room and asking to step out. Even after telling my attending the only reason I will pull out my phone is to schedule an interview.

Managed to snag two more in the last twenty four hours to other places I'm fairly excited about. Hopefully they just keep trickling in like this for the next few weeks until I hit my desired number.

FM is notorious tho for sending out way sooner than IM and other specialties. You should have a lot more interviews than most IMs at this point.
Same. I’m already at 15 for FM, which was my target number. At this point, if I get one I prefer more than one already scheduled, I’ll just do some shifting around and open the spot for someone else.

You're taking a shower with your phone?
I have my speaker playing on the counter and heard the email chime.

unrelated to residency season, I always take my iPad in the shower to watch Netflix. I have a sturdy towel rack opposite from the shower head I place it on. My hairs long enough I can almosttt watch a whole movie on hair wash days.

Holy crap. Your water bill must be huge.

I got called out by a program admin today on my email typo, "Sorry to write you at your school email, but your ERAS one kept bouncing...is it truly [email protected]?" I am an idiot, and I went ahead and contacted most of the programs to make sure they have the right contact info. At least that one admin is on it (must have googled me to find a school email).

Loving this application goldilocks zone I seem to be in where there is no life and abundance, only empty email inboxes. Regional programs don't think I'll rank them because I might seem over-qualified and bigger programs not throwing fliers on lower-tier med schools when you can interview all T20 schools. Pretty cash money tbh. I bet they would interview me if they knew my ironman on osrs claps cheeks. Should've put it in ERAS.

same but replace low-tier with DO and it’s even worse cause former AOA residencies are mad I took USMLE . I’d say let’s play some OSRS together to pass the time but you’re an Ironman. Did you grind it up during quarantine

I've been playing off and on since first semester of med school tbh. I did make massive gains during quarantine though. Finished hydra and zammy and stuff. Going to be a sight when they ask me my biggest accomplishment at an interview and I have to explain my point and click medieval simulator achievements.

Welp no invite today. On the plus side my school is making me take step 2 ck in a few days when i feel utterly unprepared.
Based on what I know about you from SDN, you're fine. My friends who crushed Step 1 continued to crush step 2 and one had no time to study at all because they were on an away that ended up being brutal time wise. The other took a month and felt like they only needed to take 2 weeks. I took a month and also felt like I only needed two weeks, my score plateaued after that time, but I didn't break into the 270 range the way they did. You got this.

Anyone have speculation on the effects of virtual interviewing on this year's match. I mean the obvious one being strong applicants hoarding invites and over interviewing but are programs extending out more invites than normal? I know they added a round of SOAP so it seems they anticipate more programs going unfilled/applicants having to SOAP. Is it safe to assume if we get to 12 interviews that the match rate will remain the same? I have no desire to over interview past the 12-14 range.

You get to 12-14 invites and u should feel lucky. More than that is great right now.

I'm interested to see if any of the T20-30 programs in any specialty end up having to SOAP some spot because they all interviewed the same 400 +/- 50 candidates.

I am not near that number yet I was just saying that's where I would like to stop if I end up with that many and have the option to decline. However, I don't want to decline if I am getting invites at places just because they are over interviewing due to the virtual nature meaning my chances of matching there were never that good.

I just got an invite 40 minutes ago to EM at Kalamazoo. Wasn't thru ERAS....was through interview broker. Interview broker process was real fast and easy, took less than a minute to schedule.
They had an early date available and several in December and January. I already have 2 IIs in December and I don't want to piss off my preceptor that month by missing a bunch of dates so my interview is next week!

Most of the programs i have spoken to said that they are not increasing interviews. But this is going to program and specialty specific.
Its anyone's guess what is going to happen.

Dr. Carmody has mentioned this on his twitter so I think it's definitely happening.

FM- some programs are sending out more invites, but the majority are keeping the same number. You can tell that these smaller programs are sending more, theres no waitlist spots available even though its not a sought after program. But the "better" programs are doing it in waves, because theres plenty of open spots.

Ill be very interested to see the statistics and who needs to SOAP, both applicants and programs. I am not a strong applicant per se but my regional bias helped a lot, I already reached my goal. Stronger applicants than me in CA and other desirable places are having a tougher time.

For what its worth for sanity- multiple PD/APDs from IM and EM have indicated within the last 48 hours that they are not even through halfway through reviewing applications, much less halfway through sending out invites. They also said LOIs at this point are annoying and way too early. We're all dying from anxiety and stress and the unknowns of this even crazier season but I'm trying to listen to the actual PDs and sit tight until mid/late November. (This is of course specialty specific, YMMV)

Edit: indicated via twitter

Yeah I feel like this is happening in EM as well. A good chunk of my interviews right now are from weaker programs where I don't have regional ties. It feels like they are interviewing a ton of people.

From personal experience, it seems some programs are sending out more invites, but not increasing their amount of interview dates. So basically more waitlist spots which is dumb.
