Hey everyone reading this!
Im a 20 year old college student and i decided last year that instead going to school to become a doctor (particularly a neonatalogist) i would become a neonatal nurse practitioner. I love helping people but i have realized that the cost for medical school is way way more than i can afford. I go to a very good SUNY school (StonyBrook) that has an excellent medical/nursing program. I am trying to get into a 2 year basic baccalaureate program which will give me a BSN.

I am kind of confused as to where i am supposed to go from there. Would i need to get into another program to become an RN? I do know that i need to get into another program for the NP position. I need someone to please please help me to understand the route i need to take. Also does anyone know any other good nursing schools in the NEw York area? I feel so stupid asking this and being 20 years old. Please don't make fun of me... 🙁

I also wanted to know if anyone knew the future job outlook for neonatal nurse practioners in the next 5 years or so. If anyone out there is a neonatal nurse practitioner, i would really really like to know more about their experiences and how they like their job. Finally does anyone know the avg. salary for someone in New York (long Island area).

Please help me out!! Thank you so much in advace for any responses left. 😀

Good luck in your career choice. Sorry I don't have the answers to your questions! 🙂

http://www.allnurses.com is a great site with discussion forums similar to this - but for nurses instead of docs/med students. 🙂

the 4 bsn program allows you to sit for the nursing boards. when you pass these ypu are an rn, bsn. you then need to work for a few years as an rn to get into a 2-3 yr nnp program. good luck

I really don't know, maybe someone has the answer but I would be surprised if there is much of a market for NP neonatologists. I don't know if NPs have "residencies" or if they just kind of fall into positions like neonatology. I think from a time standpoint medical school would be about as long and possible as expensive when you calculate all the time involved and the earning difference. Just something to think about.

there is actually quite a demand for neonatology np's and pa's. pa's can do a peds/neo residency or train on the job. . np's do a program specific to neo only ,nnp, but then can only do that specialty.
neonatology.org ( just one source) lists over 200 positions for midlevels. here is todays list of unfilled np positions only( it was several more pages if I were to have included pa as well)

I would advise you to not let the cost of medical school discourage you if being a physician is what you really want to do. I'm assuming you don't have family, house mortgage, etc. But hey, I even have classmates that have sold their houses in pursuit of becoming a MD. Speaking in general though, lenders are very generous to medical students. And as a physician, you'll be making enough to pay it back comfortably. Talk to a med school financial aid counselor and you'll most likely find that there are many students in similar situations. If you are in a unique situation, I didn't mean to belittle your knowledge of your situation. Best wishes.
