How is the atlas organized? What systems are covered?

Do you feel that this is best as a tool for board studying, or as an extra resource for class? To what extent is this detailed?

Could you please list the chapters that are in this book? Thank you!

Is there an online component or CD-ROM associated with this book?

from the sample chapter I noticed that the pages have a lot of print on them. since this is a "pocket sized" book, how big is the print??

The book begins with the fundamentals of the cell mechanism and abnormalities thereof as well as cell division, cell death, tumor growth, and aging. It then covers a wide range of topics, from abnormalities of the heat and energy balance, via the pathomechanisms of diseases of the blood, lungs, kidneys, gastrointestinal tract, heart and circulation, and of the metabolism, including endocrinal abnormalities, diseases of skeletal muscle, the senses, and the peripheral and central nervous system. Following a short review of the fundamentals of physiology, the causes, course, symptoms, and arising complications of disease processes are described along with, if necessary, the possibilities of therapeutic intervention.

The Atlas of Pathophysiology aims to address students of medicine, both prior to and during their clinical training, and also qualified doctors as well as their co-workers in the caring and therapeutic professions and to provide them with a clear overview in words and pictures of the core knowledge of modern pathophysiology and aspects of pathobiochemistry.

The font size is 8.25 pt, and should not pose any reading problems for you. The text appears smaller, because we eliminated much of the white space between lines in order to provide a pocket-sized text.

Is this the most commonly used book for pathophysiology across all medical schools?
The Color Atas of Pathophysiology is a relatively new textbook, which published just last month. However, the authors are well known in the field and have had previous success with the previous edition of this textbook and their other title – Color Atlas of Physiology. The latter has already been adopted by US medical schools, and we believe the same will hold true for this textbook.

yeah, it's ~450 pages, how big is it in size/weight though?
Color Atlas of Pathophysiology weighs just over 1lb (1.2lbs to be exact) and will fit snuggly in a resident's coat pocket at 5 X 7 1/2 inches.

Are there any histology slides/photos/pictures presented to accompany the illustrations?

Are there any histology slides/photos/pictures presented to accompany the illustrations?
Yes there are but not many. Rather than simply accompany the illustrations in the book, the color plates clarify complex relationships e.g. the malabsorption of fat, the pathophysiology of bone, or types of heart failure and their consequences, etc. However, in color plates such as "Glomerular Diseases" from chapter 5 (Kidney, Salt, and Water Balance) two histology photos showing glomerulonephritis are included in the color plate; in chapter 6 (Stomach, Intestines, Liver) photos show granuloma with macrophages in a color plate which discusses inflammatory bowel disease; and so forth.

An extension to this question: are there any questions or summary quizzes for the chapters? I realize the highlights do not include this, but it might have just been overlooked.

It certainly would be nice to have these books in electronic format (especially the pocket sized ones-- since we only have so many pockets on a white coat). What are the reasons for you are not providing e-versions of these books?

It seems like all of the e-books on iTunes/Amazon cost just as much as the physical copies, so it can't be that.

Unfortunately, the Color Atlas does not include these features.

Color is great? What exactly are the pictures included? Histology slides with pathology or?

When the atlas shows pictures of the abnormalities, does it also show a healthy version next to it for reference or must you look that up somewhere else?

was this book recently updated? I remember an older version that I thought was really cool...my only concern was that it wasn't perhaps the most current book.

Which level is this book designed for? Particularly, is this designed in mind for students in medical school to help ace Step 1? Step 2? Or is this is a general reference guide?

Are clinical treatments and outcomes also included for the appropriate abnormalities? Thanks

it says pocket-sized. how big is it really?

Yes, this book is in it's second edition. The first edition was published in 2000.

This book in meant to be a general reference, both prior to and during a doctor's clinical training. As a pocket-sized guide, this book is portable for use on the job, as a refresher, and a comprehensive study tool.

The aim of this color atlas is not to simply show images of different abnormalities, but to explain in a very concise and visual way the causal relationships between disturbances of physiologic processes and the resulting malfunction and illness.
