With the rank list deadlines quickly approaching I am looking for some additional insights about the University of Colorado's IM program. From my interview I had a very favorable impression. Some of my particular questions include:
1) Are the residents as happy as they seemed on interview day?
2) How much exposure to National Jewish do IM residents actually get?
3) What do insiders see as the programs strengths and weaknesses?
4) Has the transition to the new hospital / new administration been disruptive?

si, senor
you're 90 minutes from the slopes. it's colorado. people are easygoing, and it's sunny 300 days of the year.

2) How much exposure to National Jewish do IM residents actually get?
none to national jewish hospital itself. it is not one of the hospitals that we rotate in. however, you can arrange for research electives at national jewish, which is what i am actually doing this month.

the attendings in the rose icu are from national jewish.

3) What do insiders see as the programs strengths and weaknesses?

strengths: strong university program with good fellowship placement. excellent clinical diversity with university hospital, va, county hospital, and two private hospitals. residents are laid back but smart imho. 😀 hospitalist and primary care tracks are available.

weaknesses: we are all spread out at the five hospitals, so you don't see the other residents as much as you might in another program with fewer hospitals. i barely know most of the interns. i do, however, know everyone in my class. i know most of the r3's. with five hospitals, you have about fifteen different passwords for computer systems, pacs etc. i just keep these all written down.

4) Has the transition to the new hospital / new administration been disruptive?

no, the move to anschutz wasn't bad. i wasn't at the u during the move, but it went smoothly over a process of several days. i don't know what you mean regarding new administration- we don't have new administration. the program leadership is the same as it was before the move.

feel free to pm with any other ?'s

Thank you so much for the information!

How is the amount of workload here? A couple of the residents I talked to said they started ~6:00 am their intern year, which is earlier than other places I interviewed at. How is the teaching/conferences? The one morning report I attended at the new main hospital was really good, but not generalizable to all days/hospitals. Fellowship matching seems great, but not spectacular, although it does seem that everyone who wants a fellowship gets one.

workload- it's busy here. some places are more busy than others. university gen med wards has gotten better since we started a night float system this year. denver health and the va are busy. psl is lighter- two of the teams have three interns. as an intern, i usually got in about 6:30-7 depending where i was and the size of my census, earlier in the icu.

am report and conferences are good, when you get to go to them. all residents and interns are encouraged to go to report and conference, but you can't always make it depending on your workload. some months are better than others for being able to go to conference.
