A holler out to my fellow future classmates who will be Columbia's class of 2009! How excited are you to attend?

Let's get some questions/answers rolling too: dorms, living in NYC, classes.

is this official? i will wait till the official one comes out 😀

we can just say this is the official one. did you guys send your deposits in yet. and where are you from etc.

Haven't sent in the deposit. should do it by xmas.

from NC. thought about going up there sometime during the spring, talk about the finances with them. and check Bard out to see if it is as bad as it is proclaimed to be.

and yes, i'm psyched about attending CU. New York City. hard to beat that. Although I will still continue to thoroughly abhor, despise, and riducule the Yankees. Even though they went down to my Sox in 4 straight games, worst postseason series collapse in history! 😀

damn i should watch out for you when we go to bars and such, dont wanna get beaten up by 100 drunken new yorkers every weekend. but yea i was thinking of goin up in the spring also to check out the facilities and dorms. Do you think we have any chance of getting the Georgian, if not I def want a view of the river in Bard. vandy where are u from

yeah, i don't know how they assign the rooms. From past threads, I've seen ppl from California end up in Bard, but some floridians got into the georgians. So I hope any current columbians reading this post can give us some more insight on how they make that selection.

ha, thanks, I will probably need the protection if I make my loyalties known. They've taken the incoming class to yankee games during orientation before, and I certainly hope they can get us in on that this year.

i'm from PA (philly area) but right now i'm in nashville.

i'm really really hoping that if i don't end up in towers i get at least georgian. i don't want to revert back to frosh year living--microwaves, george forman grills, and cereal. there is some disparity in the prices of dorms too--even though online they claim $550-600 a month for a suite living, i heard it was caround $700 from someone else 😕

I'm just curious as to when they send out the info about housing. Is it right after they receive your deposit? Or do they wait until they have pretty much received enough deposits to fill the class?

I'm not 100% sure that I'm going to Columbia right now. I'd like to see if I hear something from the UCs, but if not, NYC here I come!

Don't know when they send out the housing info. I wonder if they send it out on a rolling basis as they do their decision letters, so ppl who send in their deposit early get first dibs on housing. Don't know. If they did it that way, my check would be in the mail first thing tomorrow.

i'll email Dr. M tomorrow and see what the deal is.

Hey
there is a post on the Dental forums regarding housing, dont want to kill it to death.
Housing info is sent over the course of a few packages but the main contract where you pick what type of housing you prefer is sent mid yr next yr (if i recall correctly)
~SDOS 08~

How early you send in your deposit doesn't have any bearing on what housing you get. They are separate processes. BUT, how early you turn in your housing application probably does (which you won't get till the spring).

sillyrabbit,

how is the party scene at columbia? it's probably moreso than other dental schools, right, since we actually have dorms (i feel sorry for ppl who have to communte 15+minutes to where they need to be)

what about the study scene? are the libraries nice? i tend to be hyperactive/short attention span so i HAVE to have a library/somewhere quiet to study.

hey i know im kinda getting ahead of myself, but im glad you guys are also interested in the "party scene". I like to go out alot too, just wanna make sure that there will be people there that can handel school but also make time to go out once or twice a week, at least. is that possible as a d1 or d2 at columbia? or am i just too used to undergrad?

Hey future columbians,

Just wanted to say hi from a current columbian. You guys made a wise choice in picking columbian the #1 dental school in the US ranked by me. If you guys have any questions bout anything feel free to drop them my way. You can just email me or PM me.

Goto NYU and not columbia and you'll prob realized sometime after a week that you've made a huge mistake. I'm talked to quite a few NYU students who said if they could do it again they would not pick NYU, and I have yet to talk to a columbian who has said the same.

hey freedy,
when does orientation start? also, will the textbooks you used this sem be the same as textbooks for fall 05? if so, can we buy some of those books to get a preview? thanks, man!

Um I'm really not sure when orientation starts, I think its changes from year to year, but they will tell you by mail. In terms of books, they should be the same books but of course there can always by new editions coming out. Yeah if you want to buy a book to preview get alberts Essential Cell biology. THat'll be the first book you use in SBPD

Keep in mind too though that the syllabus does change. Last year it was the same material but they had different text than we did. So things do change and you just won't know for sure till you get here.

Just relax and have fun. You have four years of hard work ahead of you...

how tight/close are the classes? i know that for the book-classes it's with the med students, but is there still a strong sense of the dental class spirit during labs? generally, do you guys work/study together often (i know it will vary from individual to individual)?

also, how are the study lounges inside the school? good lighting? comfy chairs? warm when appropriate, cool when appropriate?

would you want to memorize 5 anatomy terms per day? i was thinking abt doing that, but probably end up memorizing only 3.

hardcore~

^^man, you guys are way too intense. this is probably the last FREE summer we're going to have (ever). next few years will be cooped up at school, and after that will be the real world-work.

my ideal summer is to go backpacking in europe, stole away in trains, visit the netherlands  , and do all that stuff. might as well do it now when i'm young and to get it out of my system before i settle down in school and become boring. unfortunately, no dinero, so i may just have to settle for a road trip or something.

God Bless you vandy - i hope there are more people like you at Columbia next year who are aware that there is more to life than studying.

hey vandy, you definitely have the right idea. I'm planning a trip to Australia this summer, to go skiing (that's right; their winter is our summer). But like you, my wallet is also stretched pretty thin as well. So we'll see. But unless pigs start flying over and crapping on my head, there is no way I will be opening a textbook this summer. Heck, picking up a pencil might be a challenge.

I'll be joining you guys at Columbia as well.
For those of you who are there already I want to know your full experience at Columbia including academic and social.

yo uclaguy -

im also at ucla and will be goin to columbia next year we should chill before or somthing, a trip to maloneys maybe, i would like to get a preview of the class next year

for sure we should get together

does anyone know what the exact curriculum for the four years is?

i spent a few minutes browsing the website but could only find vague descriptions of 1st-4th year, no outline of the exact classes or timelines. i remember seeing the layout of classes and timelines either during the interview or the AADSAS sponsored book...but i need to know right now (and alas my book is at school).

oh and mrbenny, to save dinero, pb+jelly sandwiches mooched and squirreled away from the breakfasts that motels offer go a looong way. my dentist told me he ate nothing but pb everyday during dental school. you would think he'd be sick of it, but even now there are still jars and jars of pb in his pantries at home

no kidding man. i'l have PB+J for breakfast and lunch, and at night, pasta and cheap, gloppy tomato sauce. that'll be my diet. Maybe some nights I'll treat myself and have a cheeseburger over at McDonald's.

don't know what the curriculum is; what must you need it right away?

whats up columbians, i am leaving for the big apple from chicago today. the purpose of my trip is to make a final about which dental school i really want to attend. i have narrowed down the choices to columbia and uconn. the main reason this choice is difficult is that there is a difference of over 80000 dollars between the schools. i was wondering if others in this forum had to make a similar decision and still chose columbia despite the cost. and WHY????

Does CU send out some type of confirmation after they've recieved our deposits????

P.S. Any Canadian CU 2009'ers????

Uconn is as good as columbia. I would go to Ucon if I were you.. you would save alot of money.

Well, NYC is great though..

For ppl who sent in deposits during 12/04, have you recieved any housing information yet? what about loan info? I'm still waiting; maybe I'll call them sometime this week.

we're not gonna be getting that info for awhile, until spring from what I've heard.

has anyone sent in their deposit, and gotten some sort of confirmation about it?

I sent deposit yesterday and send letters to schools that i was accepted that i am not going there. It might sound stupid, but i am kind of worried now..what if columbia says, your acceptance was a mistake. I should have sent a deposit to a backup school, right? what did you guys do?

Why would you be worried?? Did you hear of them making mistakes?? Now you have me worried!!

haha, sorry i am just pathetic.

I'm pretty sure that they woulnd't make a mistake considering they sent us a twice or more signed letter og congrats and a semi-cool DVD.....

Who needs a soccer-hooligan roommate?!

so most of you gonna try to go for the Towers & Georgian? I don't know, I think it would be cool to be in Bard for the first year, meet some ppl, then move out with friends after that.

thoughts?

are you guys going to be working during the school year? it seems most people have said "omg, columbia is sooooo tough, no free time at all" but then there are also people who say "ignore those people, they're just spazes, you'll have more free time than you did during undergrad (assuming you worked hard in undergrad)"

your thoughts? i'd hate to have too much freetime on my hands (my grades actually tend to go down  ) but i don't want to be too stressed either. then again, dinero is a must. how much does a kidney go for on the blackmarket nowadays?

probably not. between school, research, and study time, whatever little time I have left I'm going to use to work out, run, and maintain a passable level of sanity.

i think you'll always hear two sides with regards to how hard a school is. It really just depends on you, and what your study habits/work ethic is. From what I've read, Columbia is certainly not easy by any standard, but it doesn't have to be a living hell.

Work hard and play hard. that's what i think.

I could not imagine working during dental school even though i worked all throughout college. The class schedule is pretty packed and your free time should be used to relax or study. It's a heavy workload but if you really put in the effort it's doable.

dude i just found out the most insane news as far as bard hall goes. the showers are coed, now this could be fun. haha
