Columbia Essay Question

Okay,

I have a silly little question. On Columbia's online app, it says 2,484 characters for the essay. I have my AMCAS essay and it says that I have 4,022 characters with no spaces and 4,818 characters with spaces. I obviously have too many characters, and my question is does Columbia mean 2,484 chracters with or without spaces?

With spaces, and if you hit a hard return that's TWO spaces.

There's a feature in the application that'll tell you how many characters you're up to.
