Columbia MPH

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am. I applied to the Health Management and Policy tracks. The admissions committee made it pretty clear that they weren't going to review any applications until after February 1st though. Did anyone else here apply to the HMP track? Also, for anyone that has been accepted to Columbia in the past years, how did they notify you? Via e-mail, snail mail, etc?

I applied to Epidemiology

I also applied to Columbia's epidemiology program. When I go to check the status of my application, it says that most decisions are made 8 weeks after the Feb. 1st deadline. It doesn't appear that they have rolling admissions.

i also applied to epidemiology.

I did but to Maternal and Child health.

I applied to Health Policy and Management, Management track.

I am still waiting too - Sociomedical (Health Promotion)

ditto. what other programs did you apply to? are you still waiting on schools other than columbia? i've heard back from 4 so far. although i applied to a lot of programs, at this point, i'm only looking forward to a few more decisions including columbia.

I applied to Health Policy and Management, Management track.

Still waiting on Columbia as well. I applied to the Sociomedical Sciences dept (Urbanism and Built Environment).

I applied to the Sexuality and Health track and haven't heard. I would guess that no one would hear until late Feb at the earliest. That is just a guess though, based on them saying that everyone will hear within eight weeks of the deadline.

Last year i recieved my decision from columbia on Feb 15th.

Good luck to all.

I'm currently doing Epidemiology at Columbia so if any of you Epi applicants have any questions let me know and for the rest if you have any general questions feel free to ask.

hey shraf! I have a question! 🙂 Is a 3.2 and an 1100 competitive to get into Columbia?

i just submitted my application last week so i'm a bit worried.

happyana, if thats what you've got then that's what you've got....all you can do is hope for the best. MPH programs look alot at experience and motivation as well as numbers though. Unlike undergrad, people really dont talk about standardized test scores and stuff so i really don't have a sense of the admissions criteria beyond my own stats.

Anyone know how generous Columbia is with financial aid/merit aid? How much in debt can a person expect to come out with after graduating?

Also anyone apply for financial aid to columbia? does it say anything in the tracking system for receipt of fafsa?

Which were? Please share?

33 MCAT, 3.58 GPA from Columbia Engineering undergrad

Anyone know how generous Columbia is with financial aid/merit aid? How much in debt can a person expect to come out with after graduating?

It seems to me that the most they give is $7k per year in grants. The max subsidized federal loans you can take out are another $8k a year. After all that it still comes out to about $13k left over per year not counting health insurance or living expenses...and remember NYC is expensive though Washington Heights, where the Mailman school is, is one of the cheaper and less desirable neighborhoods in NYC so you can find relatively cheap housing etc there.

Also anyone apply for financial aid to columbia? does it say anything in the tracking system for receipt of fafsa?

columbia has a notoriously slow tracking system, even in undergrad...give it a few more days and then follow up on it.

I applied for financial aid and my tracking area does not say anything has been received, including my fafsa. I think I am going to wait to see if I am accepted before asking about this.

Good luck everyone!

same here..i sent my fafsa but no new updates so i figure it'll update after one is accepted

Applied to the Health Management and Policy track too. Sent my application rather late so havent heard anything yet. Did anyone get any decisions ?

I wasn't accepted (Sociomedical Sciences) until the third week of March, but I think the decisions vary depending on the department that you applied to.

are we supposed to see the response from columbia on the application website or on the tracking website? or are they just emailing people? my tracking website shows all the documents are in but nothing is showing about my application being reviewed so i am wondering how we'll find out.. does anyone know?

It appears from last years post that they e-mail applicants when a decision is made.

This is true. they will send you an email telling you that your decision is ready on the application website.

Hey guys. I noticed a very subtle change in the financial aid tracking. It now says:

"2008-2009 SCHOOL PUBLIC HEALTH" but with no award letter.

they will not give you an award letter until they accept you

also, last year I got a very unsatisfactory award letter with no grant money then shortly after i accepted the admissions offer they sent me another award letter with a $7k grant. I actually brought up this issue with the admissions office during orientation but i wouldn't be surprised if it happens again this year.

shraf,

to qualify for awards, you'd need to compose an additional essay and the fafsa with parents' income as well, correct? do you happen to know if they're strict about the february 1st deadline. i haven't wrriten my essay yet, and i'm wondering whether or not i should even spend the time on it considering the deadline's passed.

well last year they didn't have that extra essay in the financial aid app

I would assume that they are pretty strict with that deadline...this year they also held the current students to the same feb 1st deadline for filing our fafsa and filling in the financial aid part of the app (without the essay). In the email they sent they made it sound as if not meeting the deadline would mean all bets are off and they can simply deny you aid without justifiable cause.

How did you submit your application without finishing the financial aid part though? Wouldn't it not allow you to?

Hey shraf,

Its good to hear from someone involved in the program. I was just wondering. What are your experiences thus far at Mailman? Do you have any regrets/things you wish you had known about the mailman school or P.H. that you know now? Id appreciate any information youd be willing to share.

Nope, the application was submitted just fine. I filled out my FAFSA by the Feb 1st deadline, but I completely forgot about the essay. Feb 1st is so early. I think I'll just complete the essay anyways and see how it goes. Thanks for the info!

no regrets about mailman at all, though of course it wasn't too big of a transition for me since i went to columbia undergrad.

one thing i was apprehensive about at first though was... when talking to an epi professor at the accepted students day... he made it sound like i wouldn't be able to get any research experience since i was coming straight out of undergrad which was completely wrong and actually had me on the fence about going to mailman.

Has anyone heard anything concrete from columbia? It seeems as though last years class started getting e-mail decisions around Feb. 15th of last year.

I haven't heard any decisions yet. Fingers crossed for the lot of us.

Yeah. they seem to be taking a lot of time. I think most of the other schools have begun to notify applicants.

yea ive heard from 6 out of the 7 schools I applied to! Columbia's admissions decision is the only reason I haven't made a choice yet

Hello,

Has anyone here applied to the MPH/MIA dual degree in conjunction with the School of International and Public Affaris (SIPA)? Any thoughts about this program?

Thanks!:luck:

I spoke with the Sociomedical Sciences Department - they are expecting to start notifying doctoral degree applicants around the beginning of March. I didn't ask about the timeline for MPH applicants.

FYI - doctoral applications were due on Jan 3rd. The beginning of March would be 8 weeks from Jan 3rd. Plus, when I called them in late January, they still hadn't started reviewing any of the doctoral applications.

Thanks for the info. That would suck big time if we had to wait that long since most of the other top MPH programs have already informed their applicants.

did anyone see that they extended their deadline to Feb 29th? What does that mean?? Do we have to wait now 8 weeks after that?? I applied early Jan.
did anyone contact them about this?

they probably didnt get enough apps....thats my thought.

Where did you see that they extended the deadline?

it says it on the application login website

I just got an email that my decision was ready on the app site. But when I went there there was no link!! Anyone else???

Same here! I'm on the phone with admissions right now.

Hey friend, I tried to call but I went straight to voicemail. Keep me posted!! Good luck to you!!!

I was told (by a very unfriendly admissions person) that they're having technical problems and should have the decision posted by tomorrow. She talked to me as if I was an idiot for asking and also won't give decisions over the phone.

What a jerk. How can they not expect us to want to know when they send us an email clearly stating that our decisions are ready?

I guess they are stressed out...but still...
