Columbia Wait List
Started by mirla
well, just called columbia and talked to dr. frantz. he says there a larger number of students on the waitlist...although wouldn't reveal how many. he also added that in all honesty, my chances of getting in would be low. 🙁 well, cya columbia thread. i'm moving to the pitt and vandy threads now. 😀

on the plus side at least he told you rather than keeping you hanging on forever. good luck!
yeah, that's really a good point tBw... at least you won't be strung around like the rest of us now... good luck yogi!

Yogi, did you actually ask him what your chances are? That takes guts. I agree with everyone else though. Now you can actually tell those other schools that they are your first choice, and move on with your life! Good luck with the other lists!!!
maybe if you ask, then your app automatically goes down the ranking. just throwing that out there as a possibility...

Check this out, might explain part of the high ratings:
From Wait-list thread voyeurs, by bannanie:
"does anyone else read the threads about waitlists for schools that you are absolutely not connected with in any way?
i actually do read them, and like to keep up with who gets in, who's still waiting despite having called an admissions office 20 times. it's such great raw human drama.
especially the columbia one. that dean frantz stuff is just craaaaazy! someone could seriously write a TV movie based on that. i think kevin spacey would be perfect for the role . . . at least that's who i envision whenever i think of this dean frantz guy."
What do you guys think of Kevin Spacey for the role?

Seriously, if he is reading this, he might as well appreciate the humor - after all we've been waiting for his decision since the interview, OCTOBER in my case. Walter Matthaw sounds great! Kevin Spacey definitely adds a sadistic dimension to the process that I think the real Frantz does not possess... Maybe the movie should be like one of those mtv specials where they follow the lives of each one of us and then in the end they reveal who got in and who didn't. Emphasis should be placed on footage from these interviews 🙂
How can it be that all these schools (Columbia, Cornell, Yale, NYU, etc.) are having fewer withdrawals than in previous years? It's just not possible that they are ALL having fewer withdrawals. Maybe the med schools are just telling us this as kind of a nice let-down, or so that we'll stop bugging them? What do you guys think?

they likely also have fewer acceptances this year.... usually a school will accept 50% above what it normally needs to fill a class. with the applicant pool being as good as it is this year (and improving every year), and a bad economy (med school apps improve when the economy is bad) they're probably accepting less students, and those that are accepted are those that are likely to go...so they have less withdrawals.
You asked him what exactly? Still working on what? I need a word-for-wrod transcript of this conversation. Anyway, no calls. Not really too hopeful about one either.
I didn't speak with him this time, he was out of the office, and then i just asked the secretary, so do you know if the waitlist has started moving yet? She replied that he is still working on that and that it hasn't moved yet. I don't know how true that is, but it seems that things are very delayed this year. I will let you know if I find out any more news. I am not too hopeful here either.
Thanks for the info. I guess they insist on keeping us in the dark about this. So much for your magic 27th! Let's set another magic date to look forward to. How about 6/3?
I don't wanna wait in vain for your love;
I don't wanna wait in vain for your love.
From the very first time I rest my eyes on you, girl,
My heart says follow t'rough.
But I know, now, that I'm way down on your line,
But the waitin' feel is fine:
So don't treat me like a puppet on a string,
'Cause I know I have to do my thing.
Don't talk to me as if you think I'm dumb;
I wanna know when you're gonna come - soon
...Cause if summer is here,
I'm still waiting there...

Okay okay. Let's move on. Everyone got all quiet once someone else got in. There's still hope, right? At least the waitlist is moving!
I don't know about so much hope. It seems to me that he has a pretty good idea of who is qualified to get these offers and who he wants in and he is calling those people at their second interviews. I think that in my case, that went to a second interview and got nothing, it is not a good sign. I was informed by one of Dr. Frantz secretaries yesterday that people are still holding on to multiple acceptances and that they are going to send tuition bills out to encourage them to make a decision. I don't know, I just think that time is running out... June 3rd! That is the new golden day...
Yes-I guess ultimately I agree with you. I am surprised that Columbia is capable of finding out if people are holding multiple acceptances since they don't use AMCAS.
True, they are not on AMCAS, however, they belong to another club - the Ivy League - and given from these conferences where head of admissions meet to discuss the "application process" I think it is naive to assume that they did not compare notes and know, down to the names of the individuals that are in everywhere. At least between Columbia and Yale (AMCAS), which are giving people similar messages - all I am saying is that it only takes a phone call, and they actually got to meet! Also, I do want to believe that story, that story is basically our only hope, so call me gullible but it seems to me that they would make up stories, but not to this extent and so consistently!
