Columbia Waitlist 2006

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi, long-time lurker, first post. I was just curious as to what sort of responses people have been getting from Dean Frantz in response to letters of interest. Do people think that they are all form letters, or have some people been receiving personalized letters? My latest response from Dean Frantz seems like a form letter, except that it mentions the date on which I wrote my letter of interest ("Thanks for your letter of April __th"). At the end of the letter, he says he "would welcome the chance to talk with" me and says that a second interview could "easily be arranged" by calling the Admissions Office. Do other people's letters end this way as well?

Wow, I'm paranoid about all this... Anyway, thanks for your help!

So, I never got a response. Thanks for making ME paranoid.

Sweet. Are you going to do the interview? Good luck.

yuck. all I received in response was a couple of postcards. while it would appear that there are not "rankings" per se for the alternate list, Dean Frantz might be showing his hand a little through the variety of letters he has sent.

Even so, paranoia is never going to get any of us anywhere, let alone admitted. Keep trying, everyone, and hopefully all of us "interested waitlisters" end up meeting this August in Washington Heights!

Cheers,
Greg

Haha, I contend that a postcard is better than a single sentence written in VWR lab marker at the bottom of my waitlist notification receipt. Talk about two birds with one stone...

yeah, definitely haven't gotten any letters with any indication of a willingness to schedule a 2nd meeting. sucks for me.

anyone speak to him recently?

-tired of waiting

is it safe to assume that only people who did not interview with frantz on interview day might have the chance to have interview with him now?

I'm sorry to say it, but I think this is a safe assumption. I think the second interviews allow Dean Frantz to basically overturn a decison that another interviewer made, if he wants to.

Sorry to say, but I don't think it's safe to assume anything. If there is any conclusion that can be drawn from all the data, opinions, and stories of Dean Fratz, it's that he can do anything he wants.

I'm sure he would give a second interview to someone he's interviewed initially if he feels he wants to learn more about that person.

I'm sure he's given 2nd interviews to plenty of kids who did not speak to him the first go around and has both accepted and rejected them.

I'm also sure he's accepted plenty of people without a second interview, regardless of who interviewed them the first time.

anybody know how people getting off the waitlist post-may 15th will be notified?
By phone. At least that's who I heard and how all the classmates I know of who got off the waitlist heard. He'll ask you if you accept the offer. I actually asked him for a week to decide, which might not have been the best idea...but he gave it to me. Man, that was a stressful few days. I'm still not entirely certain I made the right choice. (Don't worry, I think the school's great for most people, but my other option was unique and strong also.)

when i sent a letter of intent after my interview, i got a form letter back with an extra couple sentences about my interviewer, who i mentioned in my letter. it basically said "so and so had a great time meeting with you." good luck!

When I sent my thank you letter for my interview, I didn't get a special note from Dean Frantz on the bottom of her letter to me. I wouldn't speculate. Good luck to all of you.

Does anyone have any interesting strategies/advice as the withdrawal of multiple acceptances date nears? When do you think P&S will determine how many spots have been relinquished (May 15th or a couple days later).

I agree that phone calls seem to be the method of choice for offers of admissions to waitlistees. Does anyone know what happens if for some reason you miss the call. Do they offer you a spot on your voicemail (this happened to me at another school but it was during regular admission season) or do they just call the next person?

thanks

I don't think they would revoke an offer simply b/c you did not answer your phone. If I remember correctly, a kid mentioned playing phone tag with Dr. Frantz before he got an offer.

That would suck pretty hard if you did not get into medical school because you were taking a dump and couldn't get to your phone on time.

He left me a message to call his office. Not too complicated.

Does suckling on the teet of a man with a winged-scapula make any of you feel like suckers? I mean, I'm just curious.

I assume his statement was meant to be an attack on those of us who are writing LOIs/Updates (ie sucking up) to Dean Frantz. 😛

He clearly descended into complete dementia before writing this post. It looks like a pile of unrelated letters to me. Though I can make out 'help' if I squint a little, though. The poor thing. I think he has just enough lucidity to comprehend his situation. It's so sad.

Ha! good to see the 'Trane is still hanging around this thread! Best avatar ever. I've wanted to live in NYC ever since the first time I heard "Central Park West"

Is anyone going to call/write before or after the 15th or just wait to hear what happens?

Trane is the best he picked P&S, Mingus and Bird went to Brown and Dartmouth (yeah bad joke...I never even realized that's who that was until you said something I had thought it was a picture of himself  )

I can't bring myself to write a letter sucking up, and I don't know what I'd say if I did- it's not my top choice school... So, I guess I'm just living on the hope that writing letters and making calls is not the way to get off the waitlist... Though, I'm not sure what I'd do if I got in off the waitlist, because they wouldn't let me defer, and I really like the school that I'm already accepted at...

not to be impertinent or rude or like i have "wings emanating from my scapula  " but i'm confused, your on the waitlist because...

Are you saying it's not your first choice school and your accepted to your first choice? or do you mean that you want to accept at a good SOM that will let you defer? or just see if you can get in? you don't have to answer I guess it's not my business but it is a puzzling statement.

really not trying to be nosy just curious?

Sorry, I'm a little confused myself. Before I applied, Columbia was one of my top choices, but my interview experience was ugly... So, I wasn't sure where it fit on my list- I like the school I got into better, but Columbia was one of my dream schools- you know... But now I'm even more confused because they won't let me defer if I do get in... And I'm waitlisted at my top two choices (Mayo and Duke)... Does that clear things up? I'm not just waiting to see what happens, but I don't know what I'll do...

it's called having your cake and eating it too. i don't understand what the problem is if you're into a school you like btter.

I keep writing letters and getting no response. Not even the form letters, and therefore clearly not the hand-written letters. This began before I was even waitlisted, and I sent a letter. Maybe he is just not considering me at all.

i didn't get any response post-interview with my thank you note, but did get a generic response letter for a post-waitlist note. have you considered calling?

So I was bored at work and decided to call up Dr. Frantz. Got through pretty quickly. He references your file relatively quickly (i.e. your interview and follow up letter) and then goes into his traditional spiel about over accepting, students withdrawing, so on and so forth. Ironically, very little time for you to speak. Hopefully that's not a bad sign. Back to work.

yep yep, this is the same conversation I had with him a few weeks ago. It's nice to be able to get through directly to the dean but you're right, there's not much opportunity for you to sway him one way or the other.

I would never do it, but I think it would be funny to send in one of those video essays like in the movie "Legally Blonde"......

I already did, I wore a unitard and showcased my gymnastic skills, there was also a section about my UFC aspirations. Do you think it helped my chances? Maybe I should start a poll...

I already got off the waitlist this year and that's how i did it. I would recommend for everyone on the waitlist to do the same.

I would take it as a good sign. They are pretty much all form letters (thank you for you letter, etc). But he denied me the chance to have a second interview and he added that he did not know how things are going to go this year. Seize on this opportunity to convince how much you want to go to Columbia.

You've got to understand that I'm one of the most indecisive people on earth... I spent two months obsessing over whether I should pick Cleveland Clinic or Vanderbilt and then the two weeks after the decision wondering whether I'd made the wrong one.... If I don't write these update letters, I probably won't get in, but I won't have to make the difficult decision of withdrawing. I must sound like a crazy person, but there you have it... 🙄

Yay. He finally sent me a response letter to one of my letters. Generic, but at least he put in the date of my letter. Sweeet. I think he loves me.

Has anyone else been accepted? I wonder what the procedure is? It seems as though there have been several students on SDN that "had been accepted" and withdrew. I wonder if P&S immediately redistributes these putative spots as they open up or whether they save them up and and give them all out at once in a second round of acceptances after the may 15th deadline? Because Coltrane is the only person that I've heard of to be accepted off of the waitlist I'm not sure what they do with the open spots

I'm pulling for you, Stacy. I wouldn't sweat it too much at this point if I were you. We're still pre-5/15. Easy for me to say, I know.

so i just registered on sdn today...only been here a few times before but i wanted to reply to this post because i know exactly how you feel, and i would want to know what was going on too.
i was accepted last week. i wrote a few letters of interest. i didn't call the dean's office or try to schedule a second interview, though ironically i was thinking about it the day before i received the call. so anyways, i got a call from dean frantz on tuesday and it was completely unexpected- i have no idea how or why i got picked, but it couldn't have come at a better time. (i was having a pretty ****ty day/week/month). i would imagine other people have been accepted as well, but they just don't know about sdn or didn't post about it. so i just wanted to let you guys know not to give up hope, and let columbia know how bad you want it...i've got my fingers crossed for you.

congrats. that's definitely gotta be good way to get the day going.

Hi, it's me again (a person who posted last week). Update: Shortly after receiving Dean Frantz's letter, I called the admissions office and scheduled an appointment with him. Well, I just had my second interview with Dean Frantz, and at the end, he gave me an acceptance packet! I am so happy! Anyway, thanks for wishing me luck, Coltrane and others. Hope to see all you guys in the fall!
