Columbia?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
anyone have any word on these supposed full merit scholarships that towelie mentioned?

Just to clarify, I mentioned this based on one mdapps profile in which someone was offered this. I imagine they are extraordinarily rare.

if i remember, from last year's threads, i don't think they matter all that much. i don't think anyone found a relationship or anything between sending the loi and getting accepted, or even off the waitlist. i just sent one because i didn't have anything else to do and can't stand the powerless feeling of just waiting for something to happen. and because i personally don't think i'm competitive enough for columbia, so every little bit helps.

Ok. time to get hammied. Its Friday night. Mail doesn't grow on trees. wait neither does alcohol? wait does it? at the cellular level somehow? what am I talking about. Ok, goodnight SDN.

I'm with you, foto. I didn't send one either and now I'm nervous. Maybe for kicks, when people post their acceptances they can include whether they sent a letter to Dean Frantz. You know, for posterity and all that.

a 4th year med student at Columbia told me definitely to do it. Dean Frantz is a great guy and we talked about soccer during my interview (I played soccer in college.). This was my favorite interview of the whole season. I would love to go to Columbia but I probably will get struck by lightning before that will happen. But I did receive an acceptance from a wonderful East Coast med school today so I am happy. I have no expectations. I will be a med student next year and I am looking forward to it.

I live in NYC and have received nothing.....

I sent a letter of intent a couple of weeks back along with the abstract of publication I recently submitted (waiting for the publication to serve as another update/letter come WL time) so I guess we'll see how much these things weigh in decisions. *crosses fingers, eyes, and toes*

I really hope news reaches Philly come tomorrow.

:luck: :luck: Everyone.

^samwise, if you don't mind telling... did you write an LOI and where do you live?

NYC. Letter of interest.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to say good luck to everyone who hasn't heard yet / was waitlisted... I know you're all freaking out at the moment, but I got in off the waitlist last year (and so did quite a lot of other people). It can be done - I swear! I've been having an awesome year - and I hope to see you in August!

:luck:

I know. I don't think I'll officially give up hope of straight up acceptance until Monday rolls around.

In the meantime, why the hell won't this gel run? D)(#*%)#9 I wanna get outta here!!!

If you're in Philly, and it's priority mail, it should come today.

I'm on the east coast and it took priority mail only 2 days to arrive from St. Louis.

You just gave her a minor heart attack. And me. Ok I did it to myself. I need to waste 7 hours starting now.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

My stomach has been so upset this morning, it's not even funny. :barf:

You could go on the world's worst first date, like I did last night. That really soaked up the hours... yeah... great fun. W00t!

Ahhh, good luck you guys! I remember all too well what it's like to have to wait for the mail. Last year, they sent the letters out on a Thursday also, and though I live right outside NYC, I didn't get my letter until Monday SOOO if you are from the NYC area and don't hear by today, don't despair! Lots of good luck wishes!!! 🙂

EVERYBODY. EVERYBODY!

I have no idea how much to estimate for weight... but... weight doesn't matter for ship speed.

envelope yes? (I believe that doesn't matter either).

Columbia's zip is 10032.

Hey Wolfgang, When were you notified you were off the waitlist? Before May 15th or after? Thanks!

Phew... okay... there still might be hope if today is sucky.

"wii controller"

Yeah... I don't even know what that's supposed to mean. I just felt like it needed to be done. Well, besides, I've been on this weird kick where I improperly place/use air quotes during a sentence. It's "been" catching on. (Yeah... I'm lame)

do you guys think the pre-interview acceptances were sent priority? i can't wait for the mailperson to come!

Right now I'm kind of glad that I didn't switch my mailing address to my school address...campus mail is so SLOW, and waiting any longer than necessary is not fun. On the other hand, this means that I'll have to bribe my parents to stake out the mailbox at home -- sometimes they leave the mail sitting in there for several hours (gasp!)

Good luck today everyone :luck:

Hey Wolfgang, When were you notified you were off the waitlist? Before May 15th or after? Thanks!

I was accepted off the waitlist sometime in mid-May... don't remember the exact date. I called to talk to Dean Frantz, he offered me a second interview, I went in, and he offered me a spot in person. Our year had pretty slow waitlist movement, but I would still say that at least 25-30 people in our class got in off the waitlist (which you wouldn't know from reading sdn). Good luck!

Based on how little info there is on this thread today, I did not have much hope when I went to the post office.

I found a slip in my box stating I had a package. While I waited in line at the post office, I felt like my heart was going to beat its way out of my chest. I am in shock.

For those who care, I live less than 5 hours from NYC by car. It was priority mail.

Good luck to all waiting.

Roomie just got in. Priority Mail. WOO HOO!

I received my waitlist letter today. More waiting.....

Out of curiosity, does everyone receive the same letter stating that your application falls in the category of being very highly ranked and blah, blah, blah. I assume so, but I was just wondering if the waitlist is ranked. The letter sounds rather optimistic, but I don't know if it's worth getting my hopes up.

Aside: I live only about 35 minutes away from Columbia, and had written a letter of intent to Dr. Frantz, who had interviewed me. Should I bother writing another letter? Seems superfluous to me.

:luck: to all

Congrats Kouhiiko and Caramel!!!

That makes for a great Saturday night celebration!! 😀 😀 😎

Thanks Severus! I hope you get to party tonight, too🙂 . As for me, time to celebrate...

Bah, waitlist.

And thanks, P&S, for not managing to spell my name right. 👎

Congrats to those getting good news!!

Waitlisted as well. It's no surprise after my awful interview there. My letter has the same wording. Does anyone know if there are post-interview rejections or are all one thousand of us offered waitlist positions?

Thanks severus.
I hope your mailman gets his/her butt in gear and delivers your mail (I'll keep my fingers crossed that it includes a big envelope for you).

I got in today, priority mail letter in Maryland, and my interview was pretty rough

Last year it seemed like a bunch of people were rejected. Also, someone said that about half the intervewees are rejected, although it does seem like everyone is getting WL'ed.

maybe they plan to send out the rejections on monday or something...that would explain why i haven't gotten anything yet

Rejected people may not be all that excited to post about it....in any case if half of non accepted interviewees are waitlisted thats still a waitlist of 400 people! I guess it beats a thousand though
