Columbia

I have got nothing in mine either (Boston area). Anybody in Boston gotten any letter from Columbia today? I just want to hold the rejection from Columbia in my hands, so this agonizing process can end!

That's crazy. Mail from NYC to Boston shouldn't take that long. I, on the other hand, live in the middle of nowhere so it's to be expected.

Ack, why does Boston's postal service suck so much??? I'm not holding onto high hopes for hearing back today either.

I live in the middle of nowhere too and I was so disappointed that I didn't have any news in my mailbox yesterday! But I don't know why I get so worked up...sometimes my mom (who lives about a 5 hour drive away) sends me stuff and it can take 4 days...why did I assume I would get something in 2 days from NY?!?!?!

Anyway, my mail comes late too (like 5:30pm!) so I won't know about today's mail until after I get back from the gym. I'm expecting a waitlist or rejection, but I just want to KNOW so I can get my plans figured out! If I got an acceptance from Columbia, things would be messy and difficult to decide...

Yesterday was pretty rough. No acceptance from NYU. No acceptance from Columbia. On top of that, I was trying to book a hotel for my next interview only to get this email:

Dear BigRedPremed,

Thank you for your interest. However we wish to inform you that we have no room availability on March 6, 2008 for 1
night.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

"Thank you for your interest..."

"However we wish to inform you..."

"No space available for you..."

Wait, did I get rejected by a third med school? No, by a hotel too!

sounds like ur day was as bad as mine big red

i'm also in the boston area and didn't get any columbia mail yesterday. i won't get to check until after work today. maybe boston's mail system just really sucks.

hope08, yeah, boston USPS sucks! i am leaving town for five days, wont get to check my mail until next week, really dragging this out unnecessarily long!!

good luck to you!

No one in Boston has heard anything? That's strange. I'll post today when I get my mail.

Ok, my friend's BF called again and evidently the adcom lady said that they mailed out acceptances on friday and monday. last time i called, the lady said they went all out on friday. Does anyone want to confirm?

I don't think it's Boston's postal service's fault...Columbia sent some decisions yesterday (someone who posted earlier here called to confirm this). There might not be any acceptances in that batch, but it doesn't hurt to hope.

In that case, it would take until tomorrow or Thursday for Priority (or standard mail, for that matter) to get to Boston. Good luck, guys.

I'm hoping the second batch sent on Monday was just the second half of the alphabet...

The prospect of having to wait another day or two or three is really daunting at this point.

Waitlisted 🙁

Hi All,

Not to dampen anyone's hopes in the Boston area, but I live in Cambridge and received the big, priority mail envelope yesterday, Monday March 3rd.

Good luck to everyone still waiting to hear and congratulations to everyone who's heard the good news already!

"Dear letitgo:

In order to pour more salt into the wounds of yourself and your fellow citizens, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in the city of New York will not be offering any acceptances to individuals in or around Gillette Stadium, including but not limited to: Boston, Foxborough and any neighboring cities. We are sorry for the inconvience, but thank you for your secondary application fee."

Doesn't it seem strange that all we've had are waitlists and acceptances? I would hate to think so but perhaps rejections were mailed out later than waitlists and acceptances, which would explain why people like me still have nothing in their mail today.

Yeah, it's a bit odd. Looks like I'm still in the running for the first rejection, though. Columbia hasn't changed their admissions policies this year, have they? I'm assuming they still reject people and don't automatically waitlist.

Well, I'm looking forward to receiving whatever slop (ie. rejection) they sent out on Monday. No mail today, but probably tomorrow...

This is a weird question, but I stopped doing one of my activities I listed on my AMCAS in June...is it possible schools called up and rejected me because I no longer do it?

Anticipating 6 rejections this month...

And to Nirazila, it's true, I cried for a week when Tom Brady faltered in the Super Bowl.

WAIT LIST!

Guess it is better than the rejection I was expecting.

Anybody know the details of how Columbia runs its waitlist? (i.e. will they tell you your rank, how many do they wait list, are we screwed, etc.?)

I doubt they would have called your EC contacts (for one thing, you don't provide phone numbers or email addresses for these people). I wouldn't worry about that being a factor - a lot of people stop doing their activities between June and the next spring, what with interviews taking up all their time.

I'm pretty sure they don't tell you anything useful. As far as I know, there are no ranks or tiers. Basically, it's several months of purgatory.

no one's gotten an acceptance today? come on you west coasters!

getting a bit anxious on the west coast here! anyhow, I just called the admissions office, and they told me definitively that they finished mailing out decisions yesterday. so to everyone still waiting to get something in the mail (i.e. me), there's still a shred of hope. good luck everyone!

Was there any mention of whether there are acceptances in the decisions mailed yesterday?

looks like we might still have a chance then? I'm bmore, didnt get anything today still....the wait continues

So from what I gather from previous posts, the last decisions were mailed out on Monday. Does anyone know if there are acceptances in that batch, or are they just rejections and waitlists (or possibly just rejetions, which is why no one has gotten one yet).

Hey guys,

I interviewed in Feb and with Dean Frantz.... he said that I wouldn't hear back until late march because of my late interview. So if some of you are in the same boat, I guess we just get to wait and wait and wait!!!! He said that the early March letters would be for those who interviewed earlier than I did... or he could be lying to me and just didn't want to tell me to my face that I wasn't accepted! Good luck everyone!

Ok, curiosity got the best of me so I just called. The woman I spoke to made it sound like there were in fact acceptances sent yesterday. I asked when I could expect a decision and she said I should hear within the week and that they finished everything yesterday. So I asked if there were any acceptances sent yesterday and she said, "Correct. Everything in general was finished up yesterday." I guess we'll see....

Has anyone with a last name in the second half of the alphabet received anything?

Just ran home from lab for a minute to check the mail. Received the Priority Mail package in Boston, MA today, 4:30PM.

You guys on this thread are some of the best-spirited people I've interacted with on SDN. I really wish everyone still waiting the best of luck, and congratulations to everyone on all their acceptances so far! 😎

Last name in second half- haven't heard a peep. I really, really hope there were still acceptances in that batch send yesterday and that your theory of the 2nd half of the alphabet is valid!

Congratulations!

Okay, it's time for everyone to post the first letter of their last name:

Mine begins with a Z.

hm..im right in the middle with L, maybe that explains why I haven't gotten anything. My friend who got in begins with a letter A.

Well I'm happy that I've started some desperate speculation, but I think it would be most useful to know if anyone who's gotten in has a last name in the last half. For those of us who haven't heard, it could be for a number of reasons.

In all honesty though, it probably makes more sense for them to send out all the acceptances first and then wade through the rest of it rather than go in alphabetical order. I suppose there's always a chance though!

My last name begins with N by the way.

Congrats!!! Let's go Boston mail!

Have you gotten your mail yet today, SnoPearl?

Nothing in the mail for me AGAIN! What doesn't kill you, right?

edit: I'm in IL and my last name starts with a D. Good luck to everyone still waiting! Sounds like this might take a while....

As a 1st year P&S student, i went through the same anxiety filled wait last year. Congratz on everyone who got in. For those who got waitlisted, it's not so bad. A significant portion of the class of 2011 came off of the waitlist, including myself. If you really want to goto columbia, make sure to update Dean Frantz with letters/research papers/updates/LOIs. He's a very friendly & reasonable guy and he appreciates applicants are who are sincerely interested in coming to columbia.

Good luck to everyone and hope to see you all in the fall.

Not yet, I'm going home soon to check though. I'll post when I do.

I hope you've got a big envelope waiting for you!

By the way, have you guys read the Northwestern thread? Hilarious/sad. A bunch of people got empty and unsealed envelopes. If that isn't a kick in the nuts....

I read that thread. Terrible. I would've been really upset if that happened to me.

Yeah, Northwestern's really screwing up this year. If after all this I get an empty envelope from Columbia, I think I'll break down right there in the driveway.

I clicked on this thread today becuase Columbia is one of my dream schools when I start applying.... but WOW .... ya'll rock on team spirts!! Congrads to everyone who got accepted and my fingers are crossed for everyone who got waitlisted and still waiting!!

:luck::luck::luck::luck:

nothing again for me in boston. last name towards the end of the alphabet.

Letter towards the end of the alphabet. Located in southwest. Nothing.
I also know a person in MA, with last name early in the alphabet and nothing.
Ack, why can't they just email us.

Like I said before, nobody seemed to have been rejected whose letters were mailed Friday. That seems to indicate at least all the rejections went out on monday. There might be a couple of acceptances and waitlists going out on monday as well, but definitely seems sketch.

GL but I'm already quite resigned...

Mailbox is empty... I was told that the first shipment of USPS mail for today has already come, but the second one hasn't. I'm not holding my breath though...

nothing again for me in Boston. Last name near the very end of the alphabet. Good luck everyone.
