So I'm looking at apartments for when I begin medical school. There is a very nice complex ~20 minutes (with traffic) away from school (according to google), and I'm wondering if this would be a big deal each day. I could always walk to class in undergrad (5 min. max) and I'm worried the extra time could become a burden, especially with the heavy work load in med school.

What do you all think would be a reasonable commute and wouldn't get in the way of studying?

Additionally, lectures are pre-recorded, and there is no mandatory attendance, so I could potentially not even go to class and watch the lectures at double speed to save even more time. For anyone who does this, how does it really work for you?

I commute and go to lectures voluntarily. Mine is about 12-18 minutes. If you think the extra 30-40 minutes a day is detrimental study wise, you're going to have much bigger problems.

Thanks for the input. I mean I don't think 40 minutes out of my day is going to be detrimental, but that's 40 minutes I could use for something else at a time when my life will be school.

I could live in a place that's closer, but I figure a nicer apartment that's further away (for about the same cost) could be worth it.

That's what I did. I picked a nicer place a little farther away since I study better at home compared to being on campus, except going to lecture. Plus, I feel like a majority prefer to watch lectures from home anyway, then it won't even really matter for you.

Hey bud, don't think this the wrong way, but your concern for time is a bit unreasonable. You will be awake for approx. 15-16 hours a day most likely..choose a complex you would feel most comfortable at, because you are going to want a place that feels as close to home as possible. Your home is where you relax, hang out, and sleep - make it worth your while 🙂

you will spend so much time studying at home that you need to pick somewhere you like. I commute 15 minutes, and although it takes a little bit to get to class/intramurals, its not bad. Most people stop going to class pretty early on anyways, so as long as it isn't a "party" complex, you should be fine.

A 20-minute commute is a good day, for me (because of traffic - if it's not rush hour, it takes 15-ish minutes). I am still glad I live further from my school, because we have been able to rent an entire house for less than it would cost to rent an apartment closer to school. Moresuburb-y, less congested. Been doing this little commute for almost 4 years now, and it's really not bad. If I do have to make the commute during rush hour, I check the traffic situation on Google and plan my route accordingly.

Stuff reverberates in your head on the way home. Sometime a longer car ride could be a good thing because it forces you to take a break.
