Sheesh! Had a lot to read to catch up! My name is Doreen. Seems like most of the people "talking" here are GUYS!! Oh, well. I usually sit in the second row on the left hand side as you listen to lectures. Glad to hear I am not the only one panicked about anatomy. Been looking at the dead body book this weekend.......

How was the beach party.....or did anybody go?

welcome doreen...don't think i have met you yet. i'm jef and sit in the upper rows on the right side.

studying at the moment. sucks arse. me tired. :scared:

poker this week? anybody?

I'm down with poker. Although I have a friend visiting me from Houston this next weekend (conveniently before I get REALLY panicked). Good to meet you at the party on Friday...

oh and hi to Doreen...

So I usually sit right up the center aisle in the very back just on the left side of the aisle. Although I think I might start sitting in the far back left corner of the lecture hall (left being left as you face Dr. Mays...slowly falling asleep as he dims the lights).

The party (or rather, parties) on friday were great. Fried was the only one I remember seeing there but was anyone else there?

By the way, I'm running for curriculum rep so so ya'll be sure to vote no matter who you vote for (although I hope it's for me).

I missed the parties this weekend because of family duties, Ryan and JMC know what I'm talking about, you know I'm down Jeff, and I think Terrence is down too....Friday after histo lab Terrence, william and I had a little game of holdem and winner got lunch from the other two players....not bad....Anyways, if we have the game where would it be? LLP already had it at his place so maybe we should rotate the location, or maybe even have it at the commons....it was fairly cool there this friday...anyways, hope you all are studying...take care, Dr. DOn

So far, I am impressed with all the COMP D.O. students because of their exceptional academic caliber. Every one of you guys definitely deserve to be here. I hope all of you guys succeed and enter resident programs that you so desire. Also, the MSII students are awesome. I can't imagine not having you guys around to give advice and help us out.

Do you guys know if there will be events (bon fire, house party, football) every Friday?

Have fun studying, especially for gross anatomy...=)

coolness: I'm sure if you ask around there will be a party somewhere...i think msII is having another party on friday. ask around.

Poker on tuesday...we have a half day so maybe it'll be a good time to let loose for a bit. Tuesday night? my house?

sounds like a plan...What should I bring besides the chips? Also, depending on how many people come, I think we might need to get some more chips...anybody else have another set, or even some plastic ones? See you all in class....

i have another set...it's the composite clay chips (800 count). Should be good enought...as for as what to bring, BYOB. Depending on what time we want to start, maybe we can order some pizza for dinner. I guess we can talk about this today and see what people think....so fellas, spread the word, the more the merrier.

Donations Donations!??!
Bring your chairty money to Fried's house...we appreciate the kind that jingles but rather the kind that folds.

talked with dr don. sounds like we will have the poker game in the commons after class. so bring some lunch to the commons and get ready to play some poker! please bring cash, small bills please. 😀

u think Pumerantz is down for some action?

if he does it would be a good opportunity to get a tuition reimbursement 😉 so $100 buy in no limit enough LifeLong or should we make it $200? 😀

on 2nd thought...i have to study the bone boxes

I can tell everybody's busy by the lack of posts. Anyways, I think, for me, the hardest classes are embryology and anatomy. For anatomy, I keep looking over the lecture notes and the "Dead Body" book. For embryology, I printed out the Power Point presentations because the handout is just an outline. Are any of you guys printing out the Power Point presentations for OP&P? Also, any of you guys going to the Pomona concert this Thursday starting at 7 PM? Have fun studying for anatomy, biochem, embryology, histology, OP&P, and microbiology!

P.S. I love palpations! LOL

Coolness who are you!?

i think we have some poker addicts in our class. 😀

Where do you people study?

I study at starbucks...either off grand or temple, both in Diamond Bar...or at my house.

are you calling me an addict?mmmmmmmm....I think you are right, but you can't deny that it's awesome addiction 😀 oh and I study at home....nice and quiet....maybe we can set up some study groups later on during the semester.

aaaahh... study break. embryo's kicking my ass. the book helps fill in all the holes kuehn leaves out. i definitely need to get out of my appartment this weekend. I'm starting to get cabin fever. who's hosting the party?

ok, break's over. back to work...

I think as long as you print out the embryology power point presentations and focus on them, you should be fine. OP&P is a little frustrating, as expected, because I couldn't feel some landmarks on my partner. Biochem is a little detailed-oriented, but makes sense. Dr. May is awesome in presenting the histology information. Also, I really like the histo labs because I expected us to go into the lab and look at the slides under the microscope, which would have been time-consuming. Microbiology is pretty straight-forward, but I bought the Micro Made Relatively Easy book just in case. Anatomy is really kicking my ass. To remember the muscles is one thing. But to remember every single artery/nerve, movements, and attachments of each muscle is overwhelming. I'm focusing on the lecture notes and the "Dead Body Book" because I'm a visual person. Next week's going to be a marathon. Guess not much partying for me this weekend.

ah, too bad. This is the last weekend to party before the hammer really drops.

Question? Do any of you know what 2nd years say about learning the bones. Do we need to know the parts of the bone just mentioned in lecture, or are we responsible to know everything?

i'd learn parts of the bones as we learn particular muscles, i heard that on the exams we'll get a lot of bones and a point will be marked and we have to know what muscle attaches there etc...
so know where the greater tubercle, lesser tubercle etc.

Superficial and Deep Back Muscles down....Scapular and Pectoral Region here I come

I still don't have any of the regions down. All I know is that all the classes are hard and there's so much material to know. I have a greater respect now for all physicians because I realize all the work they had to go through to get where they're at.

Coolness, TheFish005.... have I met you yet... PM me and let me know who you are... anyhow just curious?.. 😀

So my future aspirations of being Class Secretary seem short-lived. oh well.

Anyways, I usually study at home, fried, and I actually meet with a couple of people pretty often. Usually different people every time. I'm somewhat caught up on most things. Tonight: Micro.

Anyone up for a poker game?

sense is right....anybody that has an MD/DO has gained more respect from me...i can't imagine any kind of academic curriculum that is as rigorous as ours....it's unbelievable the amount/depthness of material that we have learned just in 2 weeks...anybody that has an MD/DO has absolutely earned it...everyday is basically the same for me - wake up, attend lectures/labs, go to the gym, eat, take a shower, eat....

i think, for me personally, there's no shortcut in learning anatomy...i have to look at the lecture notes and pictures from the textbooks over and over and over again...repetition has helped me remember the names of the muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, veins, etc...our biochem class has become more and more detailed

Several of us are meeting Saturday at 2 pm in the anatomy lab to ID things from these last 2 weeks. Anyone is welcome to join. Good luck!

that sucks how that other guy bamboozled you; you got my vote: i met you the other day at lunch

hi you all, I havent posted anything lately...I wonder why!?! I wish anatomy was a little easier (sigh!) but this week was not too bad! last weeks material are almost gone...I think i need to defrag my brain, organize the material...right now It takes a long time for my brain cells to retrive info learned from last week! So got a lot to do this weenend.
Anyone going to the party tonight!! or is it tomorrow!! I missed the party last weekend, but i hope i can make it to this one. take care you all!

Was it just me, or did the Histo lecture on bones seemed disorganized today? I was quite confused today. Man, next week is going to be such a long week - 3 gross anatomy labs! I got a kick today in Micro on how Dr. Felton simplified aerobic respiration. LOL Does anybody know what is GROSS PLTL1 on Wed? I don't think that's a lecture or lab. I think my brain's running out of memory already. Wish I had an external floppy disk drive to connect it to my brain.

PLTL = Peer Lead Team Learning. I think. There was an e-mail sent out about it. I think what it is is they give us some clinical problems or cases and we get together in groups and talk about it.

oh cool...sounds pretty interesting

You go off into groups and spend 2 hours or so arguing with them on several clinical cases. The cases have questions based on what you've already learned in anatomy- and you give diagnosis and basic treatment answers based on the info given to you.

If you can, get in a small group with the less gung-ho people. Otherwise you end up spending too much time trying to one up each other with your clinical knowledge. And....only answer the questions asked. We often would spend 1 1/2 hours on one question, and then scramble to finish 4 more in a 1/2 hour.

Thanks Jack! Looking forward to PLTL.

Just to give you fellas the heads up...BBQ at my house on saturday aug 28. the weekend before the weekend of black tuesday. Or i would like to think happy tuesday. I'm stressin over what it's like to take one of these exams...not knowing what to really expect is really making nervous. Once we get these tests out of the way, we can kinda gauge how well we're all are studying.

In any case, BBQ, my house Aug 28th. noon. BYOB, BYOF (Bring Your Own Food)! 😱 While i would love to feed you all with steaks, money is tight these days. I will have burgers and hotdogs, chips, soda. Others are encouraged to bring things to fire up and share. 😀 Also, as I would like to invite the entire class, i can't. Of course SDN people are invited and if you have friends you want to bring from class or outside of class, that's cool. I have a pool and spa, so dress appropiately. 😀 For all you Poker addicts, it's all in!!!

PM me for directions and RSVP.

Yeah, gross anatomy is pretty intensive. But its the foundation for every class here on out. If you dont know your anatomy, your patient is pretty much screwed. On that note, I would reccommend everyone to use all your resources for this. Last I heard, the LEAD office still has enough tutors for anyone interested in getting more help. And tutors are still signing up to help out too! Also, take advantage of your facilitators (from an educational stand point). A lot of them are really great and would do anything to make gross anatomy easier for you.

Best of luck.

You sound like you are a facilitator yourself!!! R u?

Everyday, I look at the anatomy power point notes until I actually remember the names, n. & a., etc... It's all about repetitions because there's no way around it. It's pure memorization.

Hi, sorry to write on your thread guys but COMP is my first choice and I wanted to get a heads up.

What kind of stats does one need to get into the summer ISAC program? High GPA / MCAT / Undergrad Anatomy grade (required)?

I would appreciate any help you can give someone trying to a.) get into COMP and b.) prepare to get into the ISAC program for next summer.

Thank you all... you're a great group to follow to see what I'm getting myself into for next year! 👍

For ISAC, I didn't have either the "minimum" GPA or MCAT scores to qualify, but I e-mailed the person in charge of the program and asked to be considered. Since I had taken anatomy before, they had no problem. I passed and it was the best use of a summer I could ever imagine.
Now I get to facilitate and I have one less class to study for.

Good luck and try not to fantasize about ISAC until you get in because it will kick your booty and you want all positive thoughts right now.

Thank you so much for your advice! I have been fantasizing all day and it's getting to me. Anyway, I'm going to register in Anatomy this Fall (in undergrad) just in case I get in, or might just wait til Spring. I will now go back to "ghost" mode and just watch the thread. Sorry to intrude and thanks for the info "that dr.jack"!!

It's cool. Feel free to post in our thread whenever. I kind of wish I did ISAC but I never took an anatomy class in undergrad so I couldn't do it.

hey man, go study!!! 😉 so are you going to kick it with us or are you just going to be like a bookwarm all year? Come on bro, gotta have some relaxing times too you know? late, gotta check my anatomy out....damn brachial plexus!

 Of course I'll hang out sometimes especially at lunch. I'm tired of studying already. This brachial plexus stuff is insane and every time I go to lab I can't tell the difference between the veins, arteries, nerves and fascia. It's just one blob to me. 😕

Anatomy is just getting ridiculously overwhelming....=(

that's the other secret- there were some people in ISAC who hadn't taken anatomy before. of the two i know of off-hand, one is facilitating (very smart person and super nice), and the other is in the extra lucky position of having passed the class but not having to facilitate. watch out, this person is going to kick all our butts in biochem.

here's how i differentiated between nerves, arteries and veins:

nerves are whitish, luminous and you can see many fasicles running the length of the nerve when you look at the structure up-close. they are very cord-like and don't have any small wobbles, curves and the like. very strong, won't break as readily as blood vessels. get a nice penlight for the practical to see them. they will make a sound like a guitar string when plucked, but don't try to do that on the practical.

arteries are thicker, more meaty or muscular looking and can have some little curves and windiness in them. if one has been cut, the cross-section will be very round and you can appreciate the muscularity. they won't make any sound when plucked.

veins are flat and are often filled with old nasty brown blood (but not always!) in cross section they are very thin and aren't as nice and round as arteries.

if you want to come see the difference, i'll show you anytime on a cadaver.
