Complete Cervical Fusion?

I know this isn't the best place to get solid medical info, but I'm trying to get ready for Step 1 and don't have tons of time to research things and thought maybe someone on here with more knowledge could maybe alert me of some facts or resources about a complete cervical fusion.

My Dad needs one. He's currently on Morphine every day, but the pain gradually getting worse. The Doctor said when the time comes he will need a complete cervical fusion. He said he can get it now, or hold off and keep taking the Morphine.

Does anybody off hand know the success of this surgery and the flexibility after the surgery? My Dad golfs 2x/week and his number one concern is not being able to golf or still be active. Any insight would be appreciated!

If your dad golfs 2 times per week he probably doesn't need "complete cervical fusion."

First, What do you mean by "complete cervical fusion". Completely fuse a single level or fuse all levels???

Second, you are a medical student, look it up yourself.

i would get him to wean off morphine. he's just digging a hole he will eventually have to climb out of.

...you are a medical student, look it up yourself...

I have to agree. A simple medline (i.e. <5 minutes) search can provide you with review articles. Why would you want to provide family or friends with internet gossip... when you are supposed to be learning the science of medicine and become a general expert? Wouldn't you be embarassed to tell your family "outcomes are x, y, z.... I found this out on an internet chat". A google search can also provide you information if during your study you are averse to actually being in your medical library. If neither a med-library search or an at home google search is up your alley, ask the surgeon what is the literature and outcomes... he/she should be ready & willing to provide risk/benefit/outcome info to all surgical patients.

To put it directly, you are studying to be a scientist knowledgeable in the medicine and treatment of people. You won't know everything, but you sure as hell should be able to find the simple and common without sitting there waiting for the spoon of knowledge to pass your lips.

Why do people think that the ortho board is the hot spot for all personal musculoskeletal questions to be answered? No one goes to th general surgery board to ask if thir gallbladder needs to come out, or to the plastics board to ask if thy need their boobs done.

Why do people think that the ortho board is the hot spot for all personal musculoskeletal questions to be answered? No one goes to th general surgery board to ask if thir gallbladder needs to come out, or to the plastics board to ask if thy need their boobs done.

Because the Ortho posters tend to answer the question.

The GS denizens, perhaps because we are naturally crankier, tell the user to ask their physician and report the post right away, so it gets closed.
