laminectomy, spinal fusion Outcome

Hi All,

I am a med student hoping to look at some outcome data on various inpatient spinal procedures. Are there any measured surrogate variables (inpatient setting) that could be used to look at spinal fusion, or laminectomy outcomes?

I have not come across any...

First off, why are you looking at this data? Research? Personal education? Curiosity? Etc... You are painting with a large brush with your question. If it is simply at a hospital and you want to compare some of the outcomes of patients then (IMO) you need to look at why the pts had the surgery. Was it radiculopathy, weakness, low back pain, etc.... Then compare these patients on demographics, surgical procedure (interbody + hardware, vs hardware alone, vs lami alone vs. non-op). I think the bigger question is what are you looking for in outcomes (improved radiculopathy,pain, ambulation, etc) and then present a more specific question and we might be able to steer you in a better direction.
