Congrats SGU SVM!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats all!!

Hey sorry behind the times- but just to clarify- does this mean that now you can do your whole DVM at SGU on the island or do you still have to come back to the USA for your final year?

Congrats SGU!

SGU students will still be doing their 4th year clinical rotations at any of 29 affiliated schools. SGU is affiliated with 23 of the 28 schools in the U.S. as well as ones in Canada, Ireland, England, Scotland, and Australia.

The main difference AVMA accreditation brings is our graduates who are looking to be licensed in the United States will no longer be required to sit one of the additional licensing exams.

Congrats!

Crap - now I'm kinda wishing I would have gone to SGU...hmmm

good luck! feel free to ask questions if you have them!

Im thinking about applying to SGU. My worries are what will my husband do while Im there besides cook me dinner 😀 and if he can't get a job which it sounds like he probably couldnt, what do you live off of? Just loans?

Oh and can I bring my cat?

Thanks 🙂

It would be very difficult for him to get a job there....BUT...on the plus side; he could still stay with you.

If you went to Dublin, for example, your husband probably couldn't find a job either, and after 3 months he'd have to leave the country.

SGU seems pet friendly (https://sites.google.com/site/soorgsgu/pets/pets-traveling) but make sure you read and re-read the regulations. It's like doing your taxes, but 10x more complicated, IMHO.

It is difficult for significant others to find employment. We do however, have a large organization called the SO's. They plan a bunch of events together and even run a day care to take care of other student's children while they are in class.

Also it is good to remember that unlike the other Caribbean schools that have accelerated programs where students pretty much go to school all year around, SGU students do get a summer and winter break, so if you leave your SO at home, you are only in Grenada for about 4 months at a time, before you have a break to go home. With Skype and such it is very easy to keep in touch, so students who have SO's that already have good paying jobs in the states do tend to come down to Grenada without them. While many others bring them along. i would be happy to put you in touch with a vet student who is living in Grenada with their family. Just shoot me an e-mail.

Cats do need to have the FIP vaccine. Other than that is pretty easy to bring cats with you as they can come on the plane with you. You would want to fly American Airlines direct out of Miami. SGU gives you a pet import form to fill out in advance. There is no quarantine time in Grenada. Difficulty arrives with large dogs that have to go into a plane's cargo section, as they do have heat restrictions when flying.

Hooray SGU!

I'm not quite sure what you're referring to Jeff, but my cats only needed to have Rabies to go to and from Grenada. And it's strongly recommended to have FVRCP and FeLV vaccines. Maybe even mandatory to have the latter in addition to Rabies, my cats had them anyway so it wasn't a problem. But my cats certainly did not have the FIP vaccine. 🙂

Thanks, I guess I could look into if I get in. Lily can probably stay with my husbands brother if she couldnt come. I would miss her though, hehe. I'll figure it out.

On another note. SGU has rolling admissions correct? I couldnt find any deadlines on their website

there are A LOT of people with pets here, i'm sure if you decided to come someone has all of the info you'd need.

for admissions, it is on a rolling admissions basis. i *think* the deadlines for each up coming class are June 15th for the august class and Nov 15th for the january class

Congrats to all you SGUers!! I was debating between applying to Ross or SGU but now that I have this news, I am definitely applying to SGU- NOT Ross!!! Yay!!!! 😀

Soooo, you can bring your SOs along, and they can actually live down there with you?! I had no idea. I thought it was like going overseas... hmmmm, may have to do some persuading this week....

there are a lot of SOs here. there is no waiting period or 3 months only here either. and although you're technically required to live on campus 1st term, you can be exempt if you are bringing a pet or if you are living with an SO (or you can live in married housing on campus, but its expensive!!)

WOW! So, for all the SOs that you know down there, were they happy & willing to go? What are they doing? Did they have to put their careers on hold? These would be problem areas for my BF... He just got a job promotion and I think he would be hesitant to just stop working for 4 years. I'm curious to know what others are doing.

Ross is accredited, too! Not sure if that's what you're implying, but they are both equal on that front. 🙂

Oh, yup, I knew that.... but I've heard way better things from ppl at SGU vs Ross. Not to say Ross is no good by any means, BUT, I had always preferred SGU over Ross. So, now I only have to pick one to apply to 😛

My husband is in between jobs at the moment so it wouldnt be as much of a problem for him to wait on pursuing his career, but that is a really good question. Alex plans on helping out with some of the volunteer places and the SO daycare and reading a lot. I hope he doesnt get bored though.

Someone else mentioned earlier that SGU has summer break and winter break, so if your boyfriend needed to stay and focus on a good career then it sounds like you could still see eachother every few months if you think that is something that would work for you?

Yeah, that's true- I forgot about the breaks. IDK, we have talked about vet school a few times and whenever I bring up the Caribbean, it always ends up being bad news 🙁 I guess we have about 10 months to think about it though, and a lot can happen in 10 months! Are you considering going there next year??

some of the SOs here hold jobs back in the US/Canada via the internet. one of my classmate's fiance is currently working for his old company (something in the computer industry) and he just does everything electronically, which i think is working out pretty well so far. a vet i worked with this summer graduated from ross a few years ago and her husband was with her the whole time. he didn't work, just kept with everything around their apartment and with their dog. there are also plenty of people here who have an SO at home.

i think there are benefits and drawbacks to both situations (having the SO with you or leaving them behind for a few months). ultimately it comes down to what works best for your relationship.

Ahh, I just got an email today saying I got an interview!!

So jmo, I do have a question! What was your interview like and do you remember the questions they asked you?

Also, I was reading back to threads from like '09, and some of the posts said that 100% of the people granted interviews got in? Is that still correct? Or is that just wishful thinking? :xf:

Hi Blueeyes,

Congratulations on your interview! Don't be nervous!! Mine was very laid back and very comfortable, the questions they ask are pretty similar I think to what I have seen posted to other interview threads. I will be starting January 2012. I am not sure that an interview means you are automatically in, once your interview is complete in then goes to the admissions committee for a final review.

Good luck!!:luck:

Im going to apply for August of 2012. Im getting married in February so applying for January wouldnt work. Maybe we'll see eachother there!

Would your boyfriend be able to keep his job and live with you at a place in the states? Or would it be a problem no matter where you went?

And PS, do you speak french?

I would be applying for August/September as well. What is your husband going to do? Stay in the states? He would probably be able to keep his job in the states and work long distance. Although, I don't know why he thinks he can't do that in Grenada. I guess it's kind of far is he needs to fly back for meetings and such. Also, he seems to think that there wouldn't be good enough internet service down there... sounds silly to me. Someone please tell me he's wrong, so I can tell him that!!! LOL

as far as meetings and stuff, he's gonna be 100% right in that it will be a huge pain. getting to and from grenada is a full day process because there are very few direct flights, and most come in at night/late evening. they also aren't cheap. you're looking at a minimum $700 (round trip) if you book really far in advanced or take the most roundabout routes. not something i'd recommend if you're gonna do it more than once or twice a semester (not at all if you're paying).

and the internet fears aren't all that far off either unfortunately. not sure how it is off campus, but we had a ton of internet issues at the beginning of the semester. the ethernet as seemeinly resolved for me, but one of my friends almost never has it in his room. the wireless in the buildings is okay. the buildings were built to withstand hurricanes. which happens to mean they block internet signal pretty well.

i will say that clearly it is not a major problem though for SOs, because plenty of them do it, and my friend's fiance basically needs it every minute of the work day and seems to be doing well.

i guess the main take away message is that Grenada is not the US. there are lots of locals without electricity, some without flushing toilets, most wash their clothes by hand, etc. internet is mostly for the student base here. smart phones are pretty uncommon too haha

The internet is pretty stable off campus. You occasionally get times when it will go in and out but its nothing you can't handle. You always just have to keep in mind that you are moving to a developing nation and that some aspects of life are significantly different from the American/European way of life. If you come with an open mind and some patience you will do just fine.

For anyone who is interested. This is the link to the photoblog of Joshua Yetman. He is the photographer for SGU. He posts some amazing pictures of Grenada and usually updates it weekly. He also has some amazing photography from places hes traveled. Just incase any potential students want to see what awaits you.

my blog too for the curious-though my pictures are not nearly as nice as Josh's. SGU is EXTREMELY lucky to have both Josh and Jeff, both who are AMAZING advertisers and advocates for our awesome school!

I LOVE YOUR BLOG!!!!! I love that you post most everyday, I look forward to hearing what adventures were in store for you that day!!
😍😍😍😍

My husband is going to come with me. Although the internet thing might worry him a bit. Sounds like its better off campus from some other posts and if you are living with a SO sounds like you get to live off campus starting year one (please correct me if Im wrong).
My husband plans on doing lots of reading, volunteering, helping with the daycare for students children. He's not going to be sad to leave his current job though. Sounds like your boyfriend has a pretty good thing going?

Maybe he would be able to work from his computer. Sounds like flying back and forth would be harder, but not undoable. Would he be able to attend meetings via something like skype/conference calls? Or do you think that he would know enough in advance that he could plan a few weeks back in the states to make the meetings and such?

That brings up another questions. How about phones and phone service in Greneda? What do most people do?

Don't think that the internet on campus is so horrible you wont be able to do anything. Like I said earlier you will be moving to a developing nation so things aren't always as stable and on top of that you have a couple thousand students all on one network. So during the day the bandwith drops a bit but things are still manageable also the university has to block certain programs (Itunes/Certain Gaming Sites) inorder to conserve the bandwith. Since I have started here almost 2 years ago IT has made significant improvements to the network especially this term.
With regards to phone service here in GND people use one of two carriers Lime or Digicel. Blackberries are common and if you have one you can unlock it so that you can use digicel/lime service on it and purchase a data plan, this allows you to BBM people back in the states and access the internet. Most students just buy the cheap cell phones when they arrive. I think for $100 EC I was able to get a phone, SIM card and $50 EC in minutes when I first arrived. The respective carriers set up tents on campus during orientation so that you can purchase phones. Almost no one has an actual phone plan, you just go to random stores and "top up" which is basically just adding minutes to your phone. You will mainly only be using it for local calls so its rather cheap. If I go through $25-30 EC a month thats alot and that is with texting my girlfriend back home.
To keep in contact with people back home most of us use Skype or have a Magic Jack.

Thanks SGUers for all the info about life on campus. Now I will have something a little more concrete to show my boyfriend when I try to persuade him to move with me if/when I go to SGU!! You guys are great.

Hey let me know if you do, I'm waiting to find out for Jan as well.
