Would highly recommend that everyone wear masks in healthcare settings at this time, particularly if you are in a "hub" city. This is going to get much worse.

(We should also shut down all travel to and from China, but this is not the main point of the thread.)

It's pretty well recognized that masks do almost nothing to prevent the spread of respiratory illnesses. So you can do that if you want, but much more important is that people actually practice good handwashing.

I also agree that it's unclear whether this is really going to be a huge deal vs just a bunch of media folks getting a few news cycles out of it, but there's never a bad time to reinforce good common sense infection control, particularly during RSV and flu season.

The comments on this are hilarious. And the timing from sketchy releasing the video on their youtube channel is perfect.

Not necessary at this time. Most hospitals are implementing good screening procedures. You can't register a patient at my facility without getting a travel history via EMR prompts.

Being a novel virus there isn't enought data to say where this is ultimately going to fall on the severity scale. As the numbers of those infected have increased, more otherwise healthy folks have had severe illness. That said, I hate the media chasing scary headlines.

There's a need for awareness, not panic.

Here's good balanced info (from last Friday)

After seeing this post I wore my PAPR to the rads reading room... just to be safe.
Have been waiting a long time to strut out in this.

Literally saw a chinese family (who lives in the US and have for years) who were worried their toddler had coronavirus.

Am I worried about it? No. My patients sure are though.

When I was starting med school, it was swine flu that had the nation in a tizzy. The sky was falling on all of us and we'd all die from swine flu. And then, it didn't fall and we didn't die. We moved on and now we just say "flu" without distinction of swine flu or not. I suspect this will be exactly the same.

Now Ebola -- that's something to fear (intern year ED rotation nightmares).

I had swine flu. It was horrible. All the awfulness of the flu plus explosive diarrhea and vomiting.
