Yeah, that's the part that's most upsetting for me. I was really counting on second looks to help me make a decision. Two of my schools have already cancelled, and at this point, I'm expecting the same from my others.

Great meal, swag bag, PowerPoint of benefits- probably not. But if you set it up in advance you can look around, meet with admissions, financial aid, ask questions, maybe even talk to a student or two. I know it’s not close to the same experience, and there’s no networking with classmates , but it might give you some peace of mind.

The point of cancelling second look isn't to join in on the hype, it's to prevent travel and unnecessary gathering. We can only prevent a major outbreak if everyone buys in. Almost all major universities will have restricted campuses and are conducting virtual classes. It's not only your social/public health responsibility to not travel and go to their schools, they also have literally no one to meet with you.

Almost every tech company in silicon valley has their employees working from home. Every major medical conference in the world has been cancelled. Most colleges have told students to go home and most medical schools are now holding online classes. Avoiding being public is literally the best possible thing you can do at this stage of the outbreak. Not all schools even have second look weekends, and not all people are in the position of choosing from more than one school. I actually don't even see the point of going to a second look if you aren't meeting your potential classmates. If you feel so strongly about the need to go organize a second look by yourself, then go for it lol. I'm sure admissions will be super accomodating.

You’re right in some sense. The American economy will tank if every customer service sector employee chills at home (think healthcare, grocery stores, gas stations, utility companies, internet companies, and all the related supply chain systems like manufacturing and shipping). Yes, Silicon Valley tech companies can readily operationalize at-home work, but grocery stores need employees to get food to the public, otherwise **** will hit the fan. So not everyone should shelter in place - we need people in certain economic sectors to keep working, and hopefully we can reduce their risk by the rest of us staying in.
