Correction for a wrong Oral Pathology flash card 2007-2008

In Metabolic and Genetic disorders :
" Osteoporosis : also called Albers Schoenberg Disease and marble bone disease .
Then : " Osteoporosis is a generalized heriditary condition consisting of excessive bone mineralization...etc "
According to the Clinical Pathology text "Regezi" this is Osteopetrosis not Osteoporosis ...

Osteoporosis: a matabolic disease causing decrease in bone mass due to decreased serum and extracellular level of calcium and phosphorus.
Decrease in Ca and Phosphorus may be due to any of the following reasons:

• reduced intake of Ca & P in diet.
• decreased absorption thru gut by any disease.
• reduced amount of vit D by any reason causing decreased absorption of Ca & P thru gut.

Osteopetrosis:
abnormal deposition of bone due to malfunctioning of Osteoclast, thereby imbalance in remodelling of bone.
reason may be many; consult any standard book.
