Hello,

this is to initiate a discussion on Cosmetogynecology...

and the advances in it..

Is it like one has to be a certified plastic surgeon to carry out these procedures..or people do get into it following OBGY residency as they are better trained to operate on that part..

Whoa... as in vulvoplasty? I personally don't think anyone should be carrying out these procedures, PRS-trained or not, but I believe an ob/gyn residency would suffice.

In my experience on service (as a sub-i, not a resident), plastics was generally called for any reconstructive needs on the gyn tract-- i.e. gyn onc removes a vaginal/vulvar cancer, PRS reconstructs the defect.

I actually would like to ask the ob/gyn forum if you think there is any substantive ethical difference between cosmetic vulvoplasty (which is legal) and re-infundibulation, which is not.

Why shouldn't they be carried? Do you think that a woman who has a prominent labia minora that is "catching in the wind" should have access these procedures? Cosmetic vulvoplasty has a thing or two to do with functionality (unlike infudibulation) and is performed by either gyn or PRS.

Yeah I don't see why they shouldn't be carried out either. A prominent labia minora can be very painful- and should be taken care of. It's amazing how many aspiring doctors and attending doctors agree with breast augmentation but disagree with vulvoplasty. Some people just don't have their priorities in order. I don't agree with changing the body you were given but if someone wants a vulvoplasty because they want there vagina to look "good", whatever- you can have it done to everything else on your body.

Where I did my 3rd year OB/Gyn rotation, there was one OB/Gyn who I think was fellowship trained in urogyn... who did complicated reconstructions, including s/p gyn-onc surgery.
There was another OB/Gyn who was trained at the Dr Rey school of peacemeal weekend seminars. He shoots women in the vagina with lasers.

The "re-virginity stuff" doesn't quite fit in that list...It rides along the line of "social primigravida". The benefits may outweigh the risks for the patient especially in certain cultures.

Can you imagine if you read this on a CV? I mean, you'd have to chuckle (while stamping REJECTED) if you were on a residency admissions board. You'd have to call the cops if you were on a college admissions board.

Okay, he was a resident as recently as 2005 and gave resident rounds on PPROM, REI M&M, tx of acute fatty liver in pregnancy, tx of neonatal encephalopathy, and massive ob hemorrhage.

But if you have "Dr. Spot" (future publication on G-Spot Amplification) on your pubs list, it may be time to remove "critical care medicine" as one of your passions.

Rey did 3 years of g-surg, 2 of PRS, and is board eligible ... which means he chooses (most likely) not to take the PRS boards. Matlock on the other hand did the cheesy 'cosmetic fellowship' route.

Second that. As odious as he is, he completed a full plastics residency, followed by an aesthetic fellowship at Haavahd (that talks about incessantly.)

Shrug?? I mainly meant he did a fellowship in PRS. Plus, with the TV show the guy could literally be certified in absolutely nothing and still make millions stuffing boobs through bellybuttons in 30 minute increments all day long.

I'm not disagreeing with you. I know someone who did plastics residency (plastics is not considered a fellowship even though it was done after general surgery) with him and so you are indeed correct that he is plastics trained.

And you are also correct in that despite what everyone is told if you are on tv the general public doesn't give a crap about being BC. My point was simply that he is neither GS or PRS certified and that he is no longer Board Eligible in GS.

You are right Dr. Jay Mehta, the Ob/Gyn and Plastic Surgeons are proficient in performing these surgeries. But these days there is too much advertisement, resulting in people undergoing surgeries for minor vaginal and utero-vaginal prolapse , which otherwise could have been treated with pelvic exercises or else prevented by conducting a careful child delivery. From therapeutic intervention it has become a cosmetic surgery. As a result all well-trained Ob/Gyn doctors, whose primary purpose once was to train and educate the up-coming female generation to treat and serve underserved and less-privilaged female population, has moved to this business. Sometimes their adds are even disgraceful. I wish you had seen those dedicated females doctors once existed in this profession.
