Couch to 5K

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I want forebearance on the challenge mid-April, though. I think having my male parts poked, snipped, and stitched gives me the right to a week off. 🙂

Ah.

So you want to be physically AND metaphorically neutered, in the same week?

John Wayne would run to the hospital, do the operation himself, and then run home.

Just thought I would share two things that I use to supplement my workout. They seem silly, but I promise they work.

And the Ab Roller

Nooooo not the shake weight! Take it away now before i make inappropriate sexually themed jokes!

Trying to show my dad how it worked was quite the uncomfortable moment...

hysterical, but NSFW of course.

I wish it didn't work so damn well. I always have to make sure no one can see me when I use it.

You HAD to post that? Couldn't you have waited to give some of us time to post the innocuous "Could you show me how it works?"

Geez o Pete.

Well, first you grip it tightly in both hands. Then you move both hands in a rapid up and... well, you get it. 😀

I actually just finished the "6 minute workout" and my shoulders are TIRED.

Omfg. I am so not responsible for any of this.

You kidding? This is awesome. I'm going to laugh the whole time I'm running through snow tonight.

As I run the snow melts in my wake from the heat radiating off my rippling biceps.

I am sick! I find the timing not only completely unfair, but also somewhat ironic since I should be studying for an immunology exam. I dunno how I will feel tomorrow, but probably like crap if today is any indicator.

Okay... So I would totally do this, but, um, I hate running. Hate it. I can ride my bike for miles and miles (and have done so) but for some reason, running three miles seems to give me hives.

But everything is easier with music, right? Does anyone have an awesome running playlist to share? I'm not fast... maybe 11-12 minute miles. Good stuff to help keep the pace?

Sorry to interject. Please return to your previously scheduled shake weight hilarity.

If you love biking and hate running, why not just stick with biking? I think being able to bike 15 miles is just as impressive as running a 5k and both will keep you in great shape.

I sort of got myself into this with my friends. http://www.bourbonchase.com/ so I need to get myself running at some point. This seemed like a good opportunity. It's the motivation that I lack.

Forget the thread to make your day or whatever... the shake weight and all of you just did

I always run (or do anything endurance themed, including lab work) to instrumental stuff, like Explosions in the Sky, or Mogwai.

If there are no lyrics or song breaks, and the songs kind of flow together, it's easier to run further without your brain defeating itself.

AHH! I want to live in Kentucky now!! That looks so cool!

I know! I had never heard of it before last year. We happened to be at a Bourbon distillery when it was going on and couldn't help but notice all of the runners. We signed up for 2011 the week after the 2010 event occurred. It was sold out two weeks later. Crazy, right?

Ok. I just put up 2.5 miles.

In a snow thunderstorm.

Here's a link I found helpful, think it might have even been posted here in a previous thread? Anyhow, scroll down for the various weeks:

It's kind of annoying in that you have to listen to that guy's music, but at least you don't have to look at your watch the whole time since he tells you when to start and stop each segment, and his music isn't bad, just I don't like not having options.

Also remember to bring your dogs along! Makes for a better run IMO.

Yeah, Beagle mentioned something like that earlier in the thread. I tried it tonight and found it useful. I could just listen/jog/walk and not have to think. So thank you. I figure I can put up with anyone's music for 8 weeks. And after that, since there's no alternating walk/run/job/whatever, it doesn't matter.

Thanks!

Hey guys! Thanks for the motivation to start running again! I use to run all the time but for some reason I haven't gone for a run in at least a year. 👎

Anyways, I joined the runningahead.com group and I'll try to start running tomorrow. Yay! Can't wait! 😀

Sounds great but I read "Bardstown" and had this immediate "NOOOOOOO!!!!" reaction (long story short- totalled a car while driving through KY and ended up stranded, vehicle-less with my ex for 3 days.... did I mention it was three weeks before my 21st? Fail.)

It's time I get myself motivated. Stepped on the scale this morning and well.... 😱. Tomorrow I start running (ha! more like jogging). Here's hoping that the weather isn't crap.

You guys have definitely motivated me to get out with the boys (my dogs) to do three miles the past couple of days. Gotta keep the momentum going next week when classes start back up....

(Isn't this week a weird time to have a "spring break" BTW? I've always been used to having no holidays or vacation for the whole month of March. Now the school I'm having classes at has Feb break, then three weeks of classes, then March break. Then nothing in April. WTH?🙄)

Oh!- and I found a free iPod/iPhone app that I tried this morning- "MapMyFitness"- that was kind of cool because it has a GPS thingy that maps your run/walk/bike ride and does your avg speed and even elevation! The elevation thing is particularly satisfying for me because it's fairly hilly where I live 🙂

I love mapmyfitness! Use it any time we walk, I run or ride my bike

Do you need an iphone? I have an ipod but only with the wireless internet access so I feel like that app wouldn't really work since there is no GPS type feature.

I'm not sure... You can manually log things, too, so if you were doing a treadmill or something, then you can log it... Just figured out that you can add a map online- so if you have routes that you do regularly, you can add them online on a map that looks like Google maps. I find maps very satisfying. 🙂

24hr relays are the best thing EVER! Ive done two as an ultra team (6 person all girls 🙂 ).

omg now we just need to get a SDN running relay team...who is in? 200 miles, 12 runners, 3 legs each....😀

Congrats on all the excellent running!

2.5 in a snow storm...awesome DesMoody23!!!
2.3 on ice...fantastic Letitsnow!!

wayyy tough everyone!

Music is a great way to get motivated!! But just to mention again...signing up for a race is a great way to keep going! Most places have some sort of Spring 5K.

I am a running fanatic and I know lots of ways to find local races sooo PM me if you want assistance 🙂 But here is a start: http://www.runningintheusa.com/

Keep running!!!!

Me too! Today is supposed to be day 2, but my sinuses are so full of pressure that it's making my teeth feel loose. I don't think I'll be running anywhere today. Plus I have an immuno test tomorrow morning at 8:30 that I'm painfully unprepared for...

Everyone gives me a funny look when I say that! Get rest- my last Big Fun Week O' Exams was exhausting, and I know at least one exam suffered for it. I hope you feel better soon, and good luck on your test!

I went from having a bit of a sore throat, to having a bit of a stomach ache, to having a bit of a stuffy nose, which is WEIRD. Usually when I get sick, I get really sick. It's a bit of a tease actually. "Hello, SH. This is the rhino virus speaking. I'm going to make you JUST sick enough so you cannot start Couch to 5K. And I'm going to linger. Have FUN."

If there was an emoticon of a smily giving someone the finger, I'd use that here.

Just got back from my first workout. Pretty proud of myself, especially since I went out to the gym in torrential rain. And I HATE running. But I did it!

I feel 90% better today!

But... I woke up to a 1/2 inch of snow on the ground... now I have to wait for them to plow the sidewalks.

Everyone's off to such a great start!! WAY TO GO!!! :highfive:

The new sneaks are rockin' my world and my walks have been smooth as silk. Planned to try a short slow jog this morning; but it was colder than it's been in weeks today! My arthritis couldn't stand it and my knee locked up a bit. Oh well. Hopefully the warmer weather will return soon so I can give it another go.

Keep up the GREAT work, all!!! 👍
