i just look at results. you can be the best player in the world, but if you aren't racking up wins...

He's won 5 games. Carmelo has won >100 games for the nuggets and Stoudemire has won >100 games for the suns. They've also carried their teams to multiple playoff wins. Both melo and stat put up >20pts EVERY game ever since they've emerged as all stars. Jeremy Lin has done it for 5 games; it means nothing. He needs to play at least 1 full productive season (20pts, 7assists/game) in the NBA before you can put him in the same sentence as carmelo or amare.

I like this statistical analysis: http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/02/11/jeremy-lin-is-no-fluke/

The basic premise is that for a player's FIRST few games (with meaningful minutes played) to be so good is predictive of good success later.

that's what you, me, and him would all like to know 🙂

it might be because he's a modestly tall asian man from harvard in the NBA. But that doesn't make him anything other than a new player in the NBA and everyone seems to forget this.
Yeah, not like he's the first guy to ever score 20 points in his first four games starting in the NBA. And he's an Asian in the NBA.

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/13/s...asing-a-history-of-being-overlooked.html?_r=1

Everyone loves a Cinderella story like Paul Potts or Susan Boyle. This guy was sleeping on his brother's couch two weeks ago. Now everyone in the country is talking about him.

But you have to see if he can do it on a consistent basis every night. Melo and STAT have been getting 20 every night ever since they've been all stars. Jeremy lin has only been doing it for 5 games. Can he keep up the 20pts/game pace for the next 5-6 years? I seriously doubt it. That's why you can't mention Jeremy Lin's name in the same sentence as melo or stat. I'm not saying Jeremy Lin is a scrub. Jeremy Lin is more like a Mike Conley or Raymond Felton. He can play and put up OK numbers but he's not an all star.

I wouldn't go so far as to draw comparisons and speculate what his career will be like this early.

The man has played in 5 games. 5 games. Let him finish a season and/or see what he can do in the playoffs (when it really matters).

Also, I think half of his hype is due the fact that he's from Harvard and Asian.

I agree. I'm only drawing the Raymond Felton/Mike Conley comparisons because someone above said that Jeremy Lin > Melo & Stat

he's the first guy to ever score 20 points in his first four games starting in the NBA.

Ok, this is the reason why everybody's talking about him, and it's a good reason. Thank you for bringing this to my attention 😉

Happy VaLINtine's Day!

im looking for the haters to speak up about sentences again

you don't know squat about basketball. none of us were hating on jlin. the man can ball and has been overlooked for far too long. kobe, melo, stat, etc. have been doing this night after night, year after year. if you want to put jlin in the same class as these guys you clearly don't know what you are talking about and should stick to premed topics.

Mayweather has had a few interesting words

Floyd Mayweather @FloydMayweather
Jeremy Lin is a good player but all the hype is because he's Asian. Black players do what he does every night and don't get the same praise.

Floyd Mayweather @FloydMayweather
Other countries get to support/cheer their athletes and everything is fine. As soon as I support Black American athletes, I get criticized.

Floyd Mayweather @FloydMayweather
Wow what a country.

Floyd Mayweather @FloydMayweather
I'm speaking my mind on behalf of other NBA players. They are programmed to be politically correct and will be penalized if they speak up.

Floyd Mayweather @FloydMayweather
Its OK for ESPN to give their opinion but I say something and everyone questions Floyd Mayweather.

oh snap gottem

Jeremy Lin in the NBA is like a black kid getting a science PhD.

Probably yes, if for no other reason than the great publicity it would bring them.

That being said, playing basketball for a living >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> medical school.

Job security isn't as good

Pay is an order of magnitude bigger

Is this for the majority of players?

I know guys like Kobe and Lebron are going to get millions. However, most of those players don't have endorsement deals.

It's also better for a person to have a steady stream of pay on a humanistic level (Look at a guy like Pippen who blew all his money)

The average physician salary in the U.S. is 200k across all specialities and less than 1% of all MDs make over a million dollars a year.

The NBA league MINIMUM this year is 470k for rookies, over a million for any player who has been in the league longer than 5 years and 70% of all currently contracted NBA players make over a million, with the average being about $2.3 million a year.

Guys like Kobe and Lebron are TWO orders of magnitude higher as they pull in almost $20 million a year from their contract alone.

And all of that aside, you're still getting to play a game for a living.

Just out of curiosity. How long is the average players NBA career
lifespan? (The time when they start in the NBA to when they finish up)

Just out of curiosity. How long is the average players NBA lifespan? (If you have any clue)

Not sure but I do know the average NBA career is much longer than the average NHL or NFL career.

If one is wise with their money, five or six years at the NBA average of around $2.5 million should be sufficient to live comfortably on and allow for them to take on whatever future career endeavors they choose. I realize monetary responsibility is somewhat rare among pro athletes but that's a different matter entirely.

Also remember that the NBA is not the only league in which players make big money. Players who can't make it in the NBA play in China or the Euroleague and still make hundreds of thousands to millions a year.

You can even make more overseas as a big since teams in those leagues traditionally need those more.

Yep, a Turkish team was prepared to offer Kobe several million PER GAME had the lockout continued.

1. I'm getting really tired of this guy.

2. I'd choose HMS over the nba, any day.

3. Who the hell cares how much his contract is...you do realize he's Asian and can go to China and get millions in endorsements?

4. He isn't even that good. He's just new.

5. Is there anything more indicative of how hard people are riding this guys nuts than that "all i do is lin, lin, lin" tshirt?

You are just hating. Jeremy Lin can flat out play. As a minority, there are few people like me getting into science, and sometimes people get excited about it. So I can understand and kind of relate to the Jeremy Lin hype.

I am rooting for Mr. Lin and hope he cements himself as a solid all-star NBA player. Jeremy is the best thing to happen to sports in a long time, and that's not hyperbole.

You mad?

Oh yeah, you REALLY mad.

You do realize he can play here AND get Chinese endorsements? Yao Ming says %$^I^*&&*&^%^% or however they say "Hello".

4. He isn't even that good. He's just new.

You don't accidently average 25 and 8 over a seven game stretch. He probably isnt the next superstar, but he's a very good basketball player.

5. Is there anything more indicative of how hard people are riding this guys nuts than that "all i do is lin, lin, lin" tshirt?

I can literally hear the steam coming from your ears.

Just let it go, it's a cool story. I never understood why people love hating on guys like Lin and Tebow just because the media, which is out of their control, fawns over them.

I guess you're right. I really don't have a problem with him...it's all his dickriders...*cough*u*cough*

If acknowledging he is a good basketball player makes me a"dickrider" then so be it

His family is from Taiwan, I'm guessing he would choose not to go to China.

It's been, what, 7 games...
Like I said, he's new. Once teams figure him out he'll average like 15 and 6 for a season or two and then he'll disappear. Not that that doesn't make him a good basketball player...it's just people are talking about the guy like he's LBJ or DRose or something.

I'm his number one hater at this point it seems.

He was no slouch at Harvard either.

Why don't you provide me a list of guys who put up the kind of numbers he has over a 7+ game stretch in their rookie season only to fall off the face of the earth? And nobody said he is Rose or LeBron, but he is lookign like a starting caliber guard.

He'll also be lowering his pts because he'll be able to dish it to melo and amare, he's playing the 1 spot, doesn't need to avg that many pts, his assists will go up anyways.

Edit, they also need to play more quality teams, aside from the Lakers, everyone else has been sub-500 I think. Playing Dallas should be a good show.

Nihao.

Chinese is a difficult language but hello is simple.

He already has the NBA record for most points in 5 starts. He will be a common name for a long time. May not be "the best" but he will definitely be a playmaker. I like him a lot. He's just like us. We're trying to "break in" to the top medical schools. They think we can't play med. We'll show them.

What would the medical school equivalent of a money 18 foot jumper be?

To the people upset at all the attention he's getting: It's not so much the numbers he puts up that we love; it's his story and how he's kind of an inspiration to everyone. The man was undrafted, then got cut from Golden state, soon after he was cut from Houston, he joined the NY Knicks and they put him in the Development league. After all he'd been through he got his once chance to shine (Carmelo was injured, Amare took a leave of absence for death of a family member, NY's starting point guard Baron Davis was injured, and the backup was also not 100%). Lin took his opportunity and played (and has been playing) his heart out. He went from a guy who was about to basically have his entire basketball career come to an end (i.e- he was supposed to get waived from the knicks in 5-6 days), and then turned it around and became an international phenom.

That's why we love the sensation that is, Jeremy Lin .

Lets not forget that Lin-sanity also has more turnovers in his first 5 starts than anybody since 1975

So is the NBA playing this up? They'd have to be idiotic not to.

Edit: Looking at the NBA website I'm guessing the answer is yes 😛

Lets not forget that Lin-sanity also has more turnovers in his first 5 starts than anybody since 1975

But not as many turnovers as Russell Westbrook had in just 5 games of the WCF last year.

He's a point guard, they commit turnovers. It's a by-product of their job.

If Lin can produce the numbers consistently even with Melo eating up all the shot attempts, then the Knicks just forget about Baron Davis.

Baron Davis should be dealt in favor of a strong center.

Lin with 13 assists in the first three quarters tonight
