Hello SDN,

I have a mailing date of 10/21/2016 and applied to

Howard, MYD, BU, Stony Brook, UNC, ECU, Tufts, VCU and Touro

GPA: BCP 4.0, Science 3.96, Non-Science 3.5

DAT: AA 20, PAT 19, QR 19, BIO 20, IC 24, TC 21 (Taken Once)

I will graduate with a second Bachelors (BS Chemistry) this spring

I have not received an interview invite from a single school. One of my classmates has received an invite and her application went in later than mine.

I think my application may have been flagged but when I contact schools, I’m told the it is fine.

Additional information:
First time Applicant

My first degree was from a Korean University in 2005 (BA English Language and Literature)

English is my second language but I have taken all my English requirements at face to face US Universities and I am currently in writing intensive chemistry courses

I am a US citizen and have been paying state and federal taxes since 2008.

I am a 36 year old non-traditional student with a husband and son.

Do schools have set amount of Asian or non-traditional students they accept?

I am desperate for answers. I don’t know if I can go through another application emotionally and if my family can do another finically.

Guidance or anyone willing to review my application would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

There are no set numbers on how many "Asian/non-trad" applicants they accept. They interview/accept applicants mostly on merit. If you have a good application and good extracurriculars, then you have a good chance at interviews/acceptance. Based on the information you provided, I don't see any ECs. Also, submitting it in late October is rough on your chances. 4.0 and 20AA (great stats). Apply early this upcoming cycle and you're good to go.

I think demographics does play some role in admission decision, but I couldn't say for sure if it affected your chances.

I'd be happy to look over your app for any gross errors. Just PM me. I would think you would get at least a few interviews based on stats alone.

Barring major errors/inconsistencies, I doubt your application would be flagged for automatic disqualification. My application was technically incomplete upon submission and all the schools were kind enough to contact me regarding the missing information.

Demographics definitely plays a role in admission but not to the extent of an immediate dismissal of any candidate. The admissions process can be grueling and I hope it has not fully dissuaded you from a career in dentistry. Hang in there and feel free to PM.

The only issue may be that you applied a bit late. Your stats are good so if you don't get in this cycle then I would definitely apply again but as soon as AADSAS opens. Are you a NC resident?

Just because your classmate applied later than you and got an interview while you didn't doesn't mean anything is wrong with your application. She just got super lucky because applying late October is well...late

Your GPA is excellent and your DAT is fine. I think the issue might be extracurriculars (dental schools want to see that you're dedicated to dentistry). If you need to apply again, go do some shadowing and volunteering to boost your resume. And oh yeah, APPLY EARLY

I'm very curious, are you a NYS applicant? Applying to Stony OOS is tough. I'm asking cause you didn't include Buffalo, which is another NY state school. They are also OOS friendly and takes in internationals.

I recommend casting a larger net this upcoming cycle. And what Doc said is right, with a near 4.0 gpa your DAT didn't really stand out.

Also you haven't mentioned your extracurriculars which are a large part of applying to dental school.

Depending on your state residency I can almost assure you that it is not your stats, but your school list.
A number of those schools are not OOS friendly, and some of those schools may be wary of your perfect GPA.
If you don't get it this cycle, try again next year and really research the schools you apply to.
Good luck!

At this point, I think sending a professional letter of intent would definitely help if anything.

October is way too late. Some get lucky. Most don't. Apply in June should you need to reapply.

I agree that it's your school list and the fact that you applied late that's hurting you. I know for a fact that ECU only accepts NC residents and UNC only accepts a few OOS and if you are a NC resident some of the others on your list are not OOS friendly. I would rethink your school list and reapply early in the cycle. I submitted mine on June 10, interviewed on August 5 and was accepted Dec 1 so applying early is extremely important.
