During your intern year do you have the chance to get away for a whole weekend or are you always bound to be on call or at work everyother day? I am asking b/c I am in the situation of thinking about relocating for residency due to my fiancee and will be 1/2 way across the country from my family. If this happens will I ever the chance to see them again?

Also, how does vacation time work in residency if at all? What about around holidays? Are you always going to work Turkey Day, Christmas, and New Years? How long is it possible to be gone during these times?

THanks so much for replying - I appreciate any insight into how time management works during intern year and residency as a whole....

🙂

it completely depends on your program and your team, i would imagine. this was one of the questions i asked at every place i interviewed.

some places "protect" the intern and give them off every "golden weekend" (the saturday and sunday that occurs usually once a month where you are not on call or post call sat and sun). that would allow you to leave fri after work and return home sun night.

other places dont do that but allow you to work with your team--if you have a cool team and fellow intern, then it probably wouldnt be a problem to get a sat and sun off and not have another day off for 2 weeks.

good luck and i would suggest speaking with the future chiefs to find out how your program works and the plausability of it.

as for vacation, that is a scheduling nightmare. we get 2 weeks off and then a 4 day holiday. i didnt even bother to go for thanksgiving, christmas, or new years as an intern. reason being: im not married, dont have kids so it isnt a big deal for me. i'd rather take an odd vacation and spend 4 days without the hassle of holiday crowds and just relax.
