Countdown to Duke 2005!

I have a theory... if they're working to beat the envelopes then it would make sense to start with the people nearest NC first. The exceptions to this might be people are called by the minority student association or people called in connection with the MSTP program.

Of course that's all completely hypothetical, but I'm curious if it fits. Do we know where the people are from who have received calls? Anyone who received a call and is still checking this string, care to let us know?

tommygunn is correct. Give them some slack, ok? We are talking about an admissions office who does this once a year.

Have a beer, watch a movie, freak out. I'm doing all three. Just don't get mad at Duke, it doesn't exist to serve you.

How are you guys getting these official numbers for the class? Last year, according to US News, they accepted about 194 during the whole acceptance process. I can't see how they sent out over 200 to start. That 194 figure includes people off wait lists too later in the process. Unless they are making their class bigger, and a LOT bigger, than I would say its no more than 150 or so....meaning people have a good chance of getting in later of the waitlist!

I wonder how they got those US News numbers, because Guy is absolutely correct about the 221, and from what I've been told it's always been around 200-250 in the past, if not higher. And I'd trust people on the adcom any day over US News! The fact is, many people who get into schools like Duke often get into lots of other good schools too, so believe it or not many accepted students will turn Duke down. Heck, I turned Penn down in mid-July to come to Duke! I bet there's some weird technicality with US News that allows them to report a number like 194...maybe it's after they subtract people who've deferred admission from previous years, or minus MSTP students or something. In any case, there's still a good chance of getting in off the waitlist...a number of my classmates did so, including me! 🙂

But there's no way Duke is aiming to change the size of its class...we don't have the facilities to accommodate more than about 100 students.
 
I was on the waitlist last year and every bit of information I got was that the class size was going to be 100...no more....no less
we ended up with 101 because we had 1 student who deferred a year and one student who was in the previous class year and joined our class year...don't ask me
They know what they are doing and I can't imagine the science that must go into it! You want to send out the right amount of acceptances so that you fill most/all of your class with people that you REALLY wanted (and don't want to risk losing by putting on the waitlist) but you don't want to overfill your class....and then you always leave some quality applicants (ME 🙂 ) on the waitlist to make sure the class is extra special!
Regardless...I will be VERY surprised if the calss of 2009 has any more than 100 people (a few years ago I know they were sweating bullets when they thought more than 100 people were going to accept their offer) I think they have "room" for just 100 people (labs, small groups, lab professors, equipment, on and on). PLUS, I think they like a class size of 100 people.
when the time comes...we will get into the waitlist, and it sounds like there are at least 3 of us posting from Duke that were on it....and got in....so maybe we can share our experiences when the time is right (but of course all of you are going to get in!!! the letter just hasn't come yet!)

Something's been really buggin' me...........I got a Long distance call on Monday Morning (around 9 am) but I missed it. When I checked the call display, it said it was "Long distance, Unknown name, Unknown number". I am probably 99.999% wrong about this but is there even a remote possibility that this could one of the student volunteers? (Comments from those who have received calls or those in DukeMed like TommyGunn04 especially welcome!!)

yes there is a good chance that's t it was; they are not leaving messages, so you'l just get it as a missed call. I got one of those before i finally got the real thing. good luck!

Congrats, Psycho! Is Duke your top choice? It's obviously a great school, and I am a big fan of the way they assemble finanical aid packages.

thanks. honestly i don't have one top school b/c there are different reasons why i favor certain schools, but it is definitely a top choice and of the ones i've been accepted to right now it's probably between Wake or Duke.

🙁 I live in Durham (about 15 mins away from the school). No call, no letter yet. The no news is good news advice is not working this time. Oh well, guess it's time to have a drink and wash away my sorrows 🙁

I didn't respond because it was kinda ambiguous, but CONGRATS PSYCHO DOC!!!!!!

I got hte email LR, even thought I haven't gotten the letter yet. I'm assuming it will arrive today.

well i suppose that does it for duke for me. by now no word probably equals no acceptance, especially if the email has been sent out. i was rather looking forward to seeing some friends and my brother at second look weekend, too.
 
They're not doing it alphabetically, a friend with a last name starting with a T got a call yesterday morning. Sorry to say, that if you haven't got a call, a letter, or the newest email, the chances that you're accepted are pretty much nill.
 
So I have a friend at Duke. When my phone rings this morning with a Duke number I already start to shake with excitement! Oh my goodness.....this is it. I calm my shaking voice:

ME: Hello.
Person: Hello, can I speak to muchlove
ME: Speaking
Person: Just calling to say good morning!

Note to friends at Duke: Until you hear of our acceptance/rejection, DON'T CALL FROM A DUKE NUMBER!!!! My hair is turning gray as we speak! :meanie:
 
If everyone who has been accepted has been called by now or just received the email I guess the rest of us can start thinking about the waitlist.
How does it work at Duke?
Will they give out a ranking at some time so that we can see our chances?
Does movement occur pretty soon after May 15?
I saw that some people posted they didn't get in off the waitlist until July. If possible I would have like to have picked out a place to live and stuff by the end of June, but I guess we'll see.
Congrats to all those who have been accepted and good luck to everyone else still waiting.

I got an email from Phillip.B about "Your reply would be highly appreciated...Lrcjbcyv"

It includes an offer for penis enlargement, a morgage, and vicodin all in one! Could that be the one from Duke in disguise?

darn, only $100 towards airfare.
 
bought my ticket yesterday on airtran for $190 from boston..not too shabby...too bad i would have to spend $300 on it just to get $100 from duke...oh well..blue devils should be worth it...ho hum..hope my packet comes today..my mail has been kinda thin lately..are any of you dead set on Duke..i.e. not waiting until may 15th? I am trying to figure out how, if i go to duke, i would find roommates....everyone be on your best behavior at 2nd look.. 😀 but i guess i am getting waaaaaaaaaaayyy ahead of myself..

Yep, I think this is pretty much the end of the Duke road for the rest of us (at least until May 15). *sigh* It's been nice commiserating with you guys. good luck with any other schools you're waiting to hear from. :luck:

Well the mail came and left again today with no word. With no call, no email, and no letter... I feel the end of my 3 year flirtation with Duke will come in the dreaded 2nd batch. *sigh*

For those accepted, again, my upmost congratulations!

As for the rest of us, I expect the vast majority, if not all, have the excellent fortune to be in good programs elsewhere. We're on the path to our primary goal: to become excellent physicians. All the best!
 
hey, sorry to hear the bad news for those of you who didn't get emails. i did not get a phone call, and to date, i have not received an acceptance package either. i thought my chances at duke were shot, but i just got an email today saying i was accepted. i may decline my acceptance though, since it seems a lot of ppl want this school much more than me.
 
I'm from NYC. How the heck did you get a flight for 190???!?! I paid at least 200 last time, and that was with US Airways, with whom i'm never flying again :scared:
 
yep, the 2nd look email is definitely the nail in the coffin. time to change the title of the thread to "countdown to duke waitlist/rejection 2005" since the only ones waiting on anything from duke anymore are doomed. i should never have thought i could get in in the first place. oh well. oh yah, congrats to everyone else who got in...looks like a quarter of the duke 2009 class will be SDNers.

The funny thing is, I didn't think I could get in at the beginning. I almost didn't submit the secondary because I had other things to do and I thought it was a waste of time since they weren't going to accept me. I was totally shocked when they gave me an interview. Ack! It shouldn't be this upsetting. I've only thought of Duke as a possibility for the past few months.


To be honest though, it feels better to know I'm not in then to wait for a phone call all day.
