Countdown until December 1st

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@BTR1208 and I had a doggie play date to help pass time today. Say hello to Knox and Maverick!

It is very strange that AADSAS hasn't changed statuses for nearly 90% of applicants willing to report it here on SDN, especially for applicants receiving complete radio silence on multiple interviewed schools.

I'm guessing that three things are at play here: (1) AADSAS has required schools to be more tight-lipped on their status changes and pre-decision email notifications which the majority of schools are abiding to, (2) the December 1st deadline for accepting large volumes is starting to fade in coming years as more qualified post-December applicants are appearing, or (3) dental school is that more competitive this year and beyond that committees are literally making final decisions today and tomorrow. It also seems glaringly apparent that fewer and fewer students are getting interviews, which could be an alternative reason we've heard very little this cycle compared to other years.

To be sort of cynical for a moment, I believe that if you received a Check Back status last week that you were originally siphoned out of acceptances this week. Of course, you could reverse that logic optimistically, but to think that tons of people who got a Check Back status last week have magically not talked about it in 2016 compared to the last 10 years of threads is naive to me.

You're just adding to my anxiety!

All of my interviewed schools still say "Invited for Interview".... I hope this isn't a bad sign.

It seems like a lot of schools aren't using the "check back" status this year....no one has reported that as their status in any of the threads for schools I'm following. Of course people could have gotten it and not shared on SDN but other people have been sharing if they are under review/app complete/whatever

To reiterate, almost everybody on this forum who still has multiple Invited for Interview statuses (which I believe is hundreds of active accounts) are probably in the clear for a couple acceptances. I just can't see the very few Check Back posts we saw last week be the make-up of acceptees this cycle, thinking that *somehow* a significant number of people just aren't talking about it.

I think this cycle will transform the way we think about early interviews, the way committees are choosing applicants, and the way AADSAS is making it even worse for the applicant pool to feel any certainty - if committees still haven't decided until today and tomorrow, why are we still urged to make that September interview? Are your chances really better?

The thing is, only some schools have utilized the "Check back...". Definitely weird.

I'm definitely getting more and more anxious. I have that feeling where you're sitting in class and your final exam for ochem is about to begin in 5 minutes....
That is the perfect description to how I'm feeling. It's like a sinking feeling.

To round out my thoughts here, I think it's ultimately wrong what AADSAS is doing here - they're giving lesser and lesser certainty for thousands of people, and a waitlist/rejection at this point puts you behind the ball massively for the next cycle, and life in general (especially knowing that many more non-traditional applicants are re-applying and aren't automatically enrolled in academics).

Even worse, the one feature they gave for anticipation on their portal in Check Back Dec. 1st (that you can at least move forward with), they've discouraged it. Just inconsiderate and abusive on so many levels, knowing how much money and time you're investing in AADSAS.

Guys, y'all need to stop freaking out.

Most schools send notice that you've been accepted through their own university emails, so contacting aadsas is just an extra unnecessary step.

You can go back and look at other threads, some people got the notice that they were accepted yet their AADSAS portal still wasn't updated, it's just not always a priority.

Stop freaking out, stop criticizing the system. Just grab your favorite drink, and relax 🙂 I'm sipping on something nice right now tbh. We'll be good. If we don't get in this cycle, life moves on! Whether we reapply or move on in life, we'll be fine.

Stop stressing out. Go do something. Watch black mirror, or Westworld.

Maybe this year there are fewer active members and more lurkers.

Check back: your crush will text you in 24 hours
Reviewing application: your bf/gf will break up with you!
Status blank: your crush will fall for your best friend
Invited to interview: your best friend will turn out to be ur next bf/gf

Repost in the next 24 - don't break the chain or it won't come true .. and a girl in dark hair will show up at your door and screech!!!

I think this about clarifies everything.

So if my ex broke up with me last week do I get accepted everywhere?

Im sure everyone has been busy but its been a long week for me so far lol.... I have an interview at tomorrow that I was gonna turn down cuz i was really hoping to get into my number one option. last minute decision and 7 hours of driving in the car later and here I am! After the interview tomorrow I'm gonna book it home with another 7 hours of driving and crash until morning of december 1st.
That's really awesome of you that you went through with it. I always hate seeing people turn down interviews (although I know some have good reasons).

I am entertained with your theory but you're over thinking things. Wait until tomorrow (November 30). After we leave the office.
I don't know when the AADSAS server will "update" statuses tomorrow. But wait until tomorrow night.

Can you give us a legitimate reason why dental schools can't release acceptance until Dec 1st?

I dont really see any benefits of making us wait months before we are notify of a decision. Wouldnt it be more beneficial if they notify us say two weeks after our interview and let us put a deposit down if we like the school? That way if it happen to be our #1 choice we can stop spending money traveling to all these interviews and give that interview spot to other deserving applicants.

I agree. I have absolutely no desire to go into medicine, but I have to admit that pre-meds have a much better system in place for admissions.

Some of my pre-med friends applied a full month later than I did, and already received acceptances (like a month ago, lol...).

I agree with this, I still haven't heard of an official reason for why it has to be December 1st.

The ADEA Traffic Rules have been approved by the ADEA House of Delegates since 2010 (http://www.adea.org/uploadedFiles/A...inesDentalSchoolsExtendingOffersAdmission.pdf). In other words, this was a measure approved by all parties in dental education, including students, residents, faculty, and administrators at that time. I wasn't around, but that was the date they selected in the end.

The very important piece about the Traffic Rules is the response period given to applicants. I can only state that as an advisor though not having that many people who were seriously affected at the time, there was a lot of pressure placed on applicants who were given offers immediately after they interviewed. They were also pressured to give an answer (in many cases) on the day of their interview. These were really predatory practices that put applicants at a perilous position to immediately accept an offer even if it wasn't their first choice.

The guideline says "Notify applicants, either orally or in writing, of provisional or final acceptance no earlier than December 1". Although, they don't list a reason. I'm assuming there is some reason behind the magic Dec. 1st day?

You are way overthinking this. It's just a status update bro. ADEA isn't being abusive or anything like that, let's calm down here

Maybe the reason is financial?

If students won't know whether they got in until Dec. 1, when most schools have filled up a majority of their seats, then applicants naturally have to apply to more schools (or risk not getting in, having to spend more time/money reapplying, etc.).

This would lead to more schools receiving applications (and thus supplemental fees).

That makes sense, I'm assuming this is one of those reasons. Although it's strange that med. schools don't do this (I'm assuming they also like money).

Like another poster said above, the reason is to actually protect applicants. What if a school accepted an applicant immediately after the interview but pressured the applicant to accept immediately or have the offer rescinded? By streamlining the day that the offer can be given and the number of days an applicant has to accept/decline, those type of sketchy practices cannot happen anymore. It does add a bit to the financial burden of the applicant, but I think it's a worthwhile move.

The following is going to be conjecture on my part because I wasn't around when they picked this day. Suffice it to say though, that it takes a lot of effort to schedule and plan interview days for most schools. Many schools really get up and running in September and October with interview days. I'm going to guess it's still a lot of pressure on applicants who just have had a couple of interviews if we started issuing offers as early as October. Remember, some medical schools start interviewing as early as August or even mid-July. I think for the sake of some sense of stability, that our committee would have seen "enough" of a quasi-scientific sample of our pools and have had enough time to review applications before interviewing, that the December date was picked. (Again, purely conjecture.)

I will point out, remember that medical schools do not have a singular day. Osteopathic schools run on a different system and different traffic rules to allopathic schools. Plus allopathic schools also have different stratifications of applicants (they used to have early decision, but MD/PhD decisions are on a different timeline and use different traffic rules). Would you rather be in the more confusing position of a premed?

I get what you're saying, but why does the wait have to be months (for some applicants)?

They could simply set a shorter limit (say, 2 weeks) before schools can give out offers. I believe 2 weeks is what med schools currently do (not 100% sure on the exact number tho).

So a quick poll. I have a lab final tomorrow and I have yet to do any studying for it because it's hard to care at this point =(

0% I get a C
33% I get a B
76% I get an A

Should I stay up late to study or nahhhhhh

Why not implement a rule that state we have 30 days to decide on our acceptance rather than mentally torture us for months waiting for a decision. Dec 1st is near final exam time for some schools, so this is a odd date to pick. If that is their reason for Dec 1st that you mentioned, wouldnt that practice apply to all professional healthcare fields and not just dentistry?
