Question for anyone who has/is applying for jobs:

I have a few contacts at places I'm interested in, and I'll be sending out my résumé in the coming months... Is a cover letter suggested/required? I have mostly been given e-mails of contact people and they have said things like "Send your CV over", so I plan on sending it via email, and obviously writing a short message along with the cv explaining who I am and why I'm interested. I'm not sure if that message would serve as a cover letter or if I should also include something more formal... Basically I've never applied to a real job and I have no idea what I'm doing so any suggestions on how to go about the process would be appreciated.

I never sent in a cover letter. Blah, blah looking for position blah, blah. They look at CV and read LORs and then get a view of how you are as a person ( good fit) from interview.

I would send a cover letter in too. Just to say why you are looking to come there and when. Your paperwork may just be printed out and left on a desk for awhile, so you need something that can remind them about you.
