Are there any suggestions that people can offer on how to feel the cranial rhythm? I know a lot of it is quiteness, concentration, and palapation skill, but I was just wondering if there is anything I can do to maximize my ability to feel the rhythm...

take care, and good luck to all of you who are taking the boards in a few days.. 😎

Like Parrappa the Rapper says...

YOU GOTTA BELIEVE!

Its pretty hard to feel. I would just try to REALLY concentrate.

Use the Force, Luke.

Q, DO

At this point for me, it seems a bit bogus. I can feel ventilation and blood flow, but no cranial rhythm! So if you figure it out, let me know.

Practice and patience. Practice on anything to try to enhance your palpatory skills. Patience because it takes even the best DOs time to feel what they feel.

Thanks, two questions:

1. Any kind of practice that you find particulary helpful?

2. Which year were you in when you first felt the rhythm. What was your experience?

Thanks for all your advice and encouragment.

and andrea, if i figure it out, I definitely will post it on this thread.

Take care everyone.

I don't know of any particular practice you can do. Maybe work on the ribs, that is a difficult thing to feel, like which ones are restricted and what not. I think that if you use certain techniques, feeling the "release" is a really good way because that can be difficult too.
I went to some sessions of a club that we have at NYCOM called the Cranial Group. It took me a session or two to feel something(flexion, extenion, and some other things), but I had also been active with my OMM skills throughout my first two years.
It's a strange feeling because at first I had thought that the cranial rhythm worked with breathing, but that is not true. It took me some time to feel past that rhythm and it's still tough for me to feel it on some people. Keep at it and I'm sure it'll come to you.
Good Luck.

The cranial rhythm is quite a controversial subject, due to the fact that most people believe there is absolutely no movement along the cranial sutures. While this is true in respects to the bones sliding along one another, the anatomy of the sutures do allow some movement. It is slight and does take practice. In my opinion, the best way to practice is on other heads. It has been my experience (while admittedly limited) that each section of the body has a distinctly unique feel to it. I agree wholeheartedly that improving your ability feel the 'release' in many different indirect techniques will assist with your ability to discern the subtle motions of the cranial bones, feeling the bones themselves move is by far the best way to 'fine tune' this skill.

Anyways, enough rambling...

To answer your questions about feeling the rhythm, I first felt it a couple of weeks ago. It was great to realize that was what I was feeling, as opposed to some of the other motions mentioned. The key to discerning it is making sure you are on the right bones (the vault hold works best for me) focus on feeling them move. If you don't understand the principles involved in their movement, it is more difficult to discern the movement.

In my opinion, the key to successful manipulation is a sound understanding of the involved anatomy, osteopathic principles and a developed sense of what it all feels like.

I hope the above is coherent, it is late and I have spent all day studying Physiology (aka the bane of my existence).

Hope this helps ya.

Sometimes it is easier to feel the movement of the Primary Respiratory Mechanism at other places besides the head like the lower legs or under the scapula. The movement will be amplified at your wrists if you use your elbows to press into the table to create a fulcrum. Use your our proprioceptive sense felt in your joints, not just touching with your finger pads.

Cranial Rhythm??? What cranial rhythm. I'm being sarcastic of course. Never felt it even though I wanted to. I think my palpatory skills are good to great otherwise. I'm a bit perplexed.

i was able to feel the cri after my first couple attempts in lab. i think it's easier to feel it when the sphenobasilar synchondrosis is in flexion ie the paired bones are in extension. it was weird feeling it at first because it felt as if the person's head was expanding in my hands. definitely a cool experience! i hear the cri is much more discernible in infants and kids so if you have an opportunity try it on one of them and see if you can feel it.
